Chris Carpenter returns tomorrow against the Braves to make his first start after last year’s Tommy John surgery. (BTW, if Tommy John hadn’t had the surgery that made him famous, he might not have missed two years in his prime and he might have won 300 games, which would’ve made him famous for what he would have wanted to be famous for. This is a better definition of irony than 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife. Why didn’t Alanis sing about Tommy John? Just another question to ponder as you take a crap. BTW II, if Tommy John didn’t have the surgery, he probably wouldn’t have even came close to 300 games won, so this might all be moot. But I digress.) So what kind of Carpenter predictions are we looking at for the rest of 2008? Could Carpenter return and win a Cy Young in the final two months of the season? Sure, if every other starting pitcher comes down with a Casey Kotchman case of mono. Carpenter, “Pucker up, Kotchman, I need you to kiss some people. Sloppy-like!” Since Carpenter returns from Tommy John surgery, it makes his predictions a bit easier to foresee than other possible injuries, like, say Jockular Sphincteritis.

Pitchers returning from Tommy John surgery usually return 12-18 months after the surgery to yawnstipating results. Sometimes they return to gut-wrenching results, see Francisco Liriano’s April. And even when pitchers return after 12-18 months, they usually can’t be counted until the following year. But what about Carpenter specifically? He’s already been sidelined for an entire season (2003) and returned to solid results only 12 months later. While that was an arm injury, it was not Tommy John surgery. Not to mention, Carpenter is five years older now. So I see no reason why Carpenter avoids the same fate as most Tommy John recipients. Predictions for Carpenter – A couple of promising starts, a couple of awful starts.  Hope for beautiful music, but don’t be afraid to purge.

  1. Mike says:
    (link)

    Arod, Lowe for Aramis, Crawford, Nolasco….. which side you like?

  2. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Mike: Really close, but I’d prefer the Aram side, especially if I needed to fill two spots.

  3. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    @Grey

    You and yours OK Grey?

    Heard there was a bad quake.

  4. Mike says:
    (link)

    how about Crawford and Nolasco for Beltran? Id be getting Beltran

  5. Hank

    Hank says:
    (link)

    Who is Chris Carpenter?

  6. Hank

    Hank says:
    (link)

    @Hank: Heavy dose of sarcasm.

  7. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Hank: Ask Hippo, he’s a Cards fan.

  8. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    Good , first time I had time to check in. Heard about the quake and thought “oh no, Razzballs probably blank, then I thought uh, hope Grey’s alright”

  9. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    @Hank

    Chris Carpenter’s your daddy.

  10. Scott says:
    (link)

    I picked up Carpenter a couple weeks ago and stashed him on my DL spot.

    The fact that BJ Ryan miraculously came back from Tommy John within a year gives me a little hope for Carp, and that he was the only pitcher available on FA with any upside at all made it a pretty easy choice for me to add him. And maybe I’m just a sucker for feel-good stories, but I have faith in him… Even if his bullpen blows every potential win he may have.

    Small risk, worth a shot.

  11. Zebo says:
    (link)

    @Grey: is Cueto worth a look?

  12. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    Tex to the Angels for Kotchman.

  13. BSA says:
    (link)

    @Zebo: I’ve been happy lately, minus Monday. He is definitely making some adjustments.

  14. bartolo colon says:
    (link)

    i think you should delete your “semi colon” glossary entry…

  15. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Zebo: Depends at the cost of who.

    @BigFatHippo: Hmmm…. This makes me a little giddy about Kotchman.

  16. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    @Grey

    I know, does he get a chance to play every day?

    I’m sick of checking my RCL team and seeing this (x) by him and Chad Tracey.

  17. BSA says:
    (link)

    Looks like we have an Angels-Braves deal.

    Casey Kotchman was scratched from the lineup and appears to be heading to the Braves for Mark Teixeira. ESPN’s Keith Law first reported Kotchman and Steven Marek will head to the Braves….

    Just got back from bostondirtdogs to see hippo with the news.

    Why giddy, Grey?

  18. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    @BSA

    Scratched from the lineup, my lineup too. I have nobody else to play, half my team on the DL or NA.

  19. BSA says:
    (link)

    Well, as the RCL sees I’ve been busy. I also sent Lincee and Pap for Billingsley and Ankiel in another league.
    My outfield is now Ankiel, Grandy, Markakis and I still have Soria, Broxton, Fuentes (Rodney is still a FA).

  20. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @BSA: @BigFatHippo: Oops, I meant to say “…a little less giddy about Kotchman.” Forgot “less.” My bad.

  21. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    @BSA

    Ankiels been hurt for a little while, not sure what’s wrong. Keep an eye on it.

  22. BKK says:
    (link)

    @BigFatHippo: @BSA: Ankiel has an Ab strain, there is a chance he could head to the DL for 15 days.

  23. BSA says:
    (link)

    My bigger issue is that little voice telling me to jump off the Lincee Express. As you know I am quite invested and more confident in Bills over Lincee, Hudson, Bedard, and Harden (all on my team as of last night.

  24. BSA says:
    (link)

    My outfield still has Pence and ARmirez in the wings.

  25. Steve says:
    (link)

    This means Tex won’t play today, right?

  26. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Steve: Oh, I read that in the forums and thought that was rhetorical. No, he won’t play, unless he gets in the game late. I’d just bench him.

  27. Steve says:
    (link)

    @Grey: Nah – not a rhetorical question – just a slightly dumb one ;-)

    It’s good for his fantasy value though isn’t it?

  28. cruisinkc says:
    (link)

    Trade Jimmy Rollins for Ryan Howard?

  29. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Steve: He’d be good just about anywhere as I said the other day. Without looking at OBP of guys in front of him, I’d say he gets maybe a slight boost playing for a team that wants to win and with speed in front of him.

  30. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @cruisinkc: Sure, if you need what Howard gives you more than what Rollins gives you. (HRs/RBIs over Steals/Average/thinner position — no, not thinner in that way.)

  31. Steve says:
    (link)

    @Grey: Also gives me a chance to play Davis in my Util spot (instead of Tex) today! Although I fully expect Hawpe to sonavabench me – have benched him and put Markakis into RF as he is something like 9 for 11 against Rasner.

  32. cruisinkc says:
    (link)

    @Grey: Actually sounds like it would be more carlos guillen and howard for rollins. I need the HRs and RBIs and am pretty set in SBs. I’m hoping Howards avg doesn’t kill my avg too much.

  33. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    @Grey

    What kind of MI could I get for 2 closers?

    I have a big enough lead in saves and K Rod, I doubt anyone catches me.

    My other closers are Broxton, Hanrahanahan, Grabow (I know), Rodney.

    Who to target?

  34. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @BigFatHippo: Depends how badly your opponent/adversary/the other schmohawk needs saves. Is this team you need speed? I’d shoot for Upton or Roberts and settle for Pedroia. If you don’t need steals, then my answer may change.

  35. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    They’re all chasing saves.

    I have 101, next closest 94 but he has good closers, just not K Rod.

    The rest are bunched up between 70 and 83, I’ll shoot for Roberts as I doubt Upton or Pedroia will work. The guys who have them never trade, which is why they never win.

  36. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @BigFatHippo: I’d trade Rodney and Hanrahananan, assuming he goes for that.

  37. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    @Grey

    Steals would take care of themselves if I could figure out a way to get Taveras in my lineup.

    Can your Webmaster(resident hacker) find a way to put an MI by his OF? On my team only?

  38. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    If he can

    click,click,click,click,click,click,click

    That’s a lot of Pina Coladas

  39. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @BigFatHippo: I’ll see what he can do — wink, nudge, wink.

  40. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    Say no more, say no more………..

  41. BSA says:
    (link)

    What is the word on Ankiel? Does that trade need to be reworked? (re: #20)

  42. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    Pulled ab muscle.

    Been pretty hush hush in the paper, if it was serious I think they’d be all over it.

    Resting him, playing Skip in center and Mather in left.

    I think you’ll be alright if you wait it out.

  43. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    @BSA

    Al Hrabosky just said “The word on Ankiel is he’s improving, Stavinoha could be sent down to make room for Carpenter”

    Good news for you.

  44. BSA says:
    (link)

    That was a tough trade offer for me because Pap has been producing, as well as Lincee. Yet I need more in the outfield and SF is sending mixed messages about Lincee. heck last year they shut him down which means I would be screwed post trade deadline. All speculative.

  45. SaltyBiscuits says:
    (link)

    Peavy and Maggs for Teix and Lester?

  46. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    @SaltyBiscuits

    I hope you’re not giving up Peavy and Maggs.

    If you’re good in the OF, then yeah, but do better than Lester.

  47. JR says:
    (link)

    @BigFatHippo

    Drop Hanrahan for Hrabosky?

  48. SaltyBiscuits says:
    (link)

    I would be giving up Maggs and Peavy. I could pick up Hawpe to fill for Maggs (I have Vlad and McLouth also).

    Teixera would be upgrading Giambi.

    Lester : 139 innings, 9-3, 96K, 45 BB, 3.17 ERA, 1.32 WHIP… I’d take that, on a contender.

    Am I totally wrong?

    I feel like Peavy’s elbow, the Padres offense… it could go bad if he gets injured & shut down. Teix is big offensive boost over Maggs.

  49. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    @JR

    Ha

    Yeah, in 1973 keeper league.

    Hanrahananahan has more H’s, that’s not a good thing according to Grey.

  50. Mike says:
    (link)

    Grabow just came in in the 7th inning…. im guessing he isnt the closer?

  51. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Mike: I was just going to say. I just dropped Grabow and picked up Denny Bautista. If that doesn’t excite you, I can understand it.

  52. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @SaltyBiscuits: You should do better than Lester or drop Mags and Lester from the trade and do Peavy for Tex.

  53. Mike says:
    (link)

    Yeh I think im going to do the same with Grabow

  54. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    @SaltyBiscuits

    Lester, 139 IP.

    Most IP in the minors, 146. No other year close to that.

    Last year
    Tex -30 HRs 105 RBI .306 .400
    Maggs- 28 139 .363 .434

    Peavy’s a risk sure, but I’d take the other side.

  55. Mike says:
    (link)

    Denny Bautista came in in the 8th

  56. Cory says:
    (link)

    Looks like Yates it is then. His numbers are horrible, what are they thinking over there?

  57. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Mike: Yates maybe.

  58. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Cory: Yeah, bad call. I might just hold Bautista for now since he has better stuff and let it work itself out.

  59. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    Sean Burnett now?

    Agree with Cory, what are they thinking?

  60. BSA says:
    (link)

    So a laugh, The trade I made earlier (send Paps/Lincee get Ankiel/Billingsley) already has two out of the four objections needed to send the trade to the commish. Again, I know I am sending two draftees for a FA pickup and a 16th rounder, but I need more Pop in the lineup and think Lincee will be “managed” to fantasy detriment. I frigged up earlier in the year sending Halladay for Bedard, why didn’t anyone object then?

  61. Steve says:
    (link)

    Anyone else being Kazaamed like me? Mariano and Mike G…

  62. royce! says:
    (link)

    I had Mariano and Sherrill- not a pure Kazaam, but painful nonetheless… esp. b/c I started Buehrle, Kuroda and Sheets this week, too. Blech.

    Anyone have an opinion on who is the best of the following SPs?:

    Parra, Garza, Ubaldo Jimenez & Ollie Perez.

  63. BSA says:
    (link)

    Chris Young in San Diego 4.0 IP, 64 pitches, 1 hit, 1 BB, 7K. Time to get “giddy” if you picked him up off FA? If I made Lincee become Bills and Hudson become Young this week I think I can begin to see the sunshine.

  64. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @BSA: There’s nothing in that trade to veto. Do you often veto other people’s trades and this is payback?

    Young looks good, but the D-Backs aren’t the most selective group. It’s better than seeing him pitch poorly.

    @Steve: Nah, I don’t have those guys on any team.

    @royce!: Parra, Garza, Perez, Ubaldo — it’s a real risky group though.

  65. RT says:
    (link)

    Anyone see what happened to Bradley?
    I’m thinking Mr. Cruz may be getting a call from Oklahoma

  66. RT says:
    (link)

    From Rotoworld….
    Milton Bradley left Tuesday’s game in the eighth inning with a strained left quad.

  67. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @RT: Bradley hurt? C’mon!

  68. RT says:
    (link)

    @Grey:
    Was thinking of a flyer on Cruz. Couldn’t hurt in a deep league.

  69. BSA says:
    (link)

    @Grey: I am the consistent trader in my league. Heck I think all trades have involved or been initiated by me. There is always at least one guy who vetoes every F’in trade. I told you there is one guy who forebode my first loss at his hands in our H2H matchup and told me to screw Varitek up my ass when I asked for an SP at the beginning of the season. I responded by giving him three choices for rejecting a trade and one for being an asshole by cut/pasting his response. We have played each other twice and each lost once, are tied for first, and play each other again in the last week.

    I think some people object just to be assholes. After this trade, because this is probably it for moves aside from add/drops, I will go back in the blog and put your letter on the message board to spice it up for the end run.

    My belief with trading is that we should all run our own teams because everyone has a different strategy. Unless someone is getting suckered then use the objection card. Otherwise, “Butt Out”

  70. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @RT: Definitely worth it.

    @BSA: Sounds like you got one person you’d really like to beat.

  71. BSA says:
    (link)

    I want him humiliated. I’ll probably do a little writing in the forum before the lineups lock if I continue and make the playoffs and get some input from yourself and other commenters.

  72. BKK says:
    (link)

    @RT: Funny, I dumped Nomar (@Grey: Nomar hurt? C’mon!) for Cruz just 15 minutes ago reading IowaCubs thread in the forum on McPherson and Cruz. When I went to the Yahoo the exploding yellow piece of paper said he could get called up after the T-deadline. Maybe sooner now! It was just a flier, there is absolutely nothing in FA.

  73. BSA says:
    (link)

    Sanchez worth picking up and dropping Bedard for? The only thing I know on him is the Sawx traded him and he threw a no hitter.

  74. RT says:
    (link)

    @BKK:
    I had roster spot when Chipper went on the DL and I was just kinda waiting around. I would love to see Cruz do something in that line up, in that Park.

  75. BKK says:
    (link)

    Now Davis as a no-no going through 6.

    @Grey: BTW, thanks for jinxing my man Lackey. Its like talking shutout with 2 minutes left in the hockey game. You know someone’s going to score.

  76. RT says:
    (link)

    No-no or perfecto?

  77. BKK says:
    (link)

    @RT: Now if he can just live up to the potential he has shown in the minors. He has had a couple cracks at it already. Maybe 2008 is his year.

  78. BKK says:
    (link)

    @RT: I think you were right but doesn’t matter now, I did him in. Giles just singled. Not like anyone has them on their fantasy roster.

  79. BSA says:
    (link)

    On that note he is pulled after 6 IP. Rowand two HBP in one game. Get the ice packs ready.

  80. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @BSA: Sanchez has Ks like he should have better numbers, if that makes sense. He gives up a lot of hits which turn to runs and not a lot of wins.

    @BKK: You just jinxed yourself, man!

  81. BKK says:
    (link)

    @Grey: I did put the hex on Davis I realize that (and to those streamers out there, I apologize), fortunately, I was cutting the grass when Lackey went down not knowing what was happening…it would have been too painful to watch it slip away in the 9th.

  82. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    Alex Romero just made the one of the best catches I’ve ever seen. I literally got chills. Is that gay? Not that there’s anything wrong with chills.

  83. BSA says:
    (link)

    I just asked the general, any news on Liriano, question in the forums. I wanted to come back here and throw this out there – Who has a greater chance of starting in the next three weeks – Liriano or Bedard?
