Getting Headley
Will probably be activated for Tuesday. I hear the Padres didn’t want to pay for his Sunday meal waiver when the guys decided to go to Dick’s Last Resort in the Gaslamp. Chicken Fingers don’t come cheap. Headley should play six of seven games unless he struggles mightily, then he’ll probably play seven of seven like the Friars did with Kouzmanoff last year. Headley can hit. Ryan Howard and Prince Fielder are about the only ones that could hit forty home runs in Petco if it were their home park, so the park will be a factor in Headley’s success. Headley has a terrific eye and good power. Will he be Bruceterful? Perhaps, he’s got a much better eye than Bruce, but his ballpark is dreadful. Also, his speed is somewhere between A-Gonz and Kouz, which is to say it’s non-existent. I’d say Headley’s projections are 30/10/40/.280. Numbers that could make a difference in deep leagues. Of course, the exciting thing is the ceiling’s much higher since he’s a rookie. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
Jorge Campillo – Complete game loss is nothing to sneeze at. Unless you’re allergic to complete game losses, which would be an odd allergy. But I think Trace Adkins can help.
Micah Owings – I’m done done with Micah Owings. You wanna use him in the near future? You’re taking your WHIP into your own hands. For those reading in Latin America, caveat emptor.
Billy Wagner – Hey, what do you know? He can still get three guys out. Imagine how many saves Nolan Ryan would’ve had if he only had to get three guys out four days a week. Seriously, imagine it. If you can’t, I will for you. 12,000 saves for Nolan Ryan.
Paul Konerko – Might head to the DL. Maybe he’s got the same injury as Victor Martinez. The ‘ol “I’m really sucking and I gotta figure out an excuse fast” injury.
David DeJesus – 3 HRs and .345 in June. Also, turned a loss into a win.
Joe Saunders – Fifth ten game winner. Is it me or are we headed for more twenty game winners this year than in the last four years combined?
Lastings Milledge – Playings welledge recently, but stilledge got a way to go before he’s worth addings.
Jacoby Ellsbury – 33rd steal. On pace for a lot. I gotta say, one of the bigger surprises this season so far for Grey (that’s me). Maybe later in the week I’ll do my top twenty surprises. That seems like something you people would like to read.
Vernon Wells – After leaving with a sore wrist on Saturday, he was back in there to go 0-for-4. I’ll cut to the chase for you, a sore wrist for Wells is a major issue.
Jorge Posada – 8-for-22 and two home runs since returning. Eh, Doumit did that in one game. If you need a piece, trade Posada and don’t feel guilty about it. As Oskar Schindler said, I pardon you.
Jay Bruce – He just came off his worst week (5-for-30 with one RBI) and I don’t think it’s necessarily going to get better. However, he did manage to find time to air lift 18 rare mountain bongo antelope to Africa.
C.C. Sabathia – I’m sure glad he was an absolute waste of a top pick– Oh, wait. He’s fine. Yeah, dur. (BTW, I said Cliff Lee wouldn’t be at 2.50 ERA by June 15th and Eric Karabell said he’d finish the season with it. I win. Again. Eat it, Karabaloney.)

@BigFatHippo: Took him five previous starts to get 12 Ks. Just a matter of the Rays deciding to swing and miss a lot. Nolasco has dynmite stuff but has a lot of problems making quality starts. Would be a very high risk, some small reward type. IMO, not worth a pickup.

I’m not ready to roster Campillo yet but he’s definitely a watch list guy as is Parra, who I’m picking up for Wednesday against Toronto at home.

@everyone: I am spot starting Andrew Miller today and Kenny Rogers tomorrow, any thoughts on my decision?
[Reply]
June 16th, 2008 at 6:21 am
@Zebo: You’re obviously a gambler but both seem like logical spot starts.
You’d think Miller should be pretty good against Seattle since he’s been pitching decently against good offensive teams lately.
Kenny Rogers is an emotion guy and the feeling in Detroit is pretty strong right now and SF isn’t exactly the top offense in the NL but he is going h2h with Jonathan Sanchez who’s been very good lately….especially at home.
My opinion: Miller, yes. Rogers, no.

Hey, does anyone think that Chase Headley can spell Kevin Kouzmanoff enough times at 3B to become eligible at 3B for next season?
It’s a Yahoo! league so he only needs 5 starts. Headley may be keeper material for me if he can be a 3B/OF.
[Reply]
June 16th, 2008 at 7:27 am
@Frank Rizzo: I know, I don’t like Rogers personally, but there aren’t that many good matchups for tomorrow, and I need to catch up on wins and lower my ratios, because of the failings of Verlander, Harang and Owings.
[Reply]
June 16th, 2008 at 7:42 am
@Zebo: Don’t know if it makes you feel any better but Rotoworld supports you decision…
Tuesday, 6/17 – Kenny Rogers @ SF – Rogers has been on a hot streak of late, allowing just three runs in his last 29 innings. While that’s unlikely to continue for the rest of the season, Kenny has three things going for him in this start: it’s in San Francisco, he’ll be facing pitchers, and he’ll be facing the Giants.

pretty big trade I need some help with this one.
Offer 1– I recieve Rollins and Torii Hunter for Billingsley, Tejada and Rios
Offer 2– I receive Rollins for Hamels and Tejada
Keep in mind I also have Ryan Howard which makes Rollins even more enticing.
[Reply]
June 16th, 2008 at 9:17 am
@mike: It depends on the rest of your roster. Without knowing your roster both of these deals look bad for you to me. In both deals you are giving up major names/talent just for Rollins. Why do you want Rollins so bad over Tejada for starters?
[Reply]
@Adam: Headley will definitely get 5 starts at 3B.
@mike: I like offer 1 a bit more. You upgrade on two positions (I find Hunter to be more consistent than Rios) and Billingsley is a fair price for the upgrade. Offer 2 has an upgrade but Hamels is a steep price for it…
href=”#comment-6678″>Zebo: Interleague is a good time to spot start. Agree with Frank Rizzo that Rogers is a gamble…if Scott Olsen is available, I’d take him instead….

My team
C-Pierzynski
1B-Howard SP1-Hamels
2B-Kinsler SP2-Wainwright
3B-Aramis SP3-Billinglsey
SS-Tejada SP4-Jered Weaver
OF1-Crawford SP5-Oswalt
OF2-Markakis SP6-McGowan
OF3-Rios SP7-Chris(leaky Brain) Young
UTIL1-Berkman SP8-Parra
UTIL2-Alexi Casilla or Double E (platoon)
Im looking to do offer 1 more because I love Hamels and really dont wanna move him.
Tejada has been good for me but Rios is pissin me off and im hurting a little in HR lately, I figure Hunter is a more steady source of HR over Rios.
Thanks guys I appreciate the advice

June 16th, 2008 at 11:00 am
@mike: Good grief dude. Your team is stacked top to bottom. You must be in 1st place. You didn’t give your pitching staff but I agree with Rudy….trade #1 could help you with an upgrade at SS and a slight upgrade at OF. Depending on your rotation, Billingsley might be expendable but I wouldn’t give away an ace like Hamels unless there were top 10 guys being mentioned.
You’re right about Rollins in the SB department and probably R’s as well. I believe Tejada will outdo Rollins in the RBI category for obvious reasons but with your lineup, RBI’s shouldn’t be a major problem. Then again, with Kinsler, Crawford, and Rios I doubt you’re hurting too much in the SB department.
[Reply]
June 16th, 2008 at 11:03 am
@Freak: I love the trade but I go nuts for pitching maybe more than some others.
You got a stud SP for a guy you picked up off waivers. Harden’s obviously an injury risk but so far so good and he’s been lights out on every outing. Murphy is very hot at the moment but I doubt you were completely dependant on him in your OF. Good trade.

@Frank Rizzo: believe it or not Im in 3rd, which is why I am angry and looking to make a move. Just looking at my team I thought Id be a lock for first. My pitching is listed right next to my hitters.
[Reply]
June 16th, 2008 at 11:27 am
@mike: Sorry, I totally missed that. I think I was just so amazed at your offense that I didn’t even realize that pitchers were listed next to them.
You may be talking to the wrong guy (since I love pitching) but I don’t think I would make the move if it included giving up Billingsley. Your offense is absolutely stellar while you’ve got questions in your pitching….Wainwright, Oswalt, Weaver, Young, Parra. Billingsley isn’t fantastic but you can’t argue with the K’s. Averaging over a K per inning is pretty decent in my book.
I’d hold if I were you unless you could make a trade without losing on your pitching staff. It’s hard for me to believe you’ll stay in 3rd place with that offensive fire power.

[Reply]
June 16th, 2008 at 11:46 am
@Zebo: I picked up Parra myself for a spot start Tuesday. Look at what he’s done in his 2 past starts at home against Houston and Arizona and consider he’s pitching against Toronto’s meager offense. You’re always taking a chance that it could blow up but the numbers show it’s a great matchup to me. I’d stay far away from Livan personally.

I have the best girlfriend, and she loves baseball. Just the other day she was giving me a B.J. Upton, when she begged for A-Rod. Needless to say, it wasn’t long before I left my Nick Markakis all over her Brandon Backe. But that wasn’t even enough, she wanted more! So I J.D. Drew my Shaun Marcum all over her Chase Headley. Then she got Derek Lowe and spread her Brian McCann. I was just about Adam Dunn, when she suddenly hopped off my Kerry Wood. I told her to grab my Randy Johnson and when she said Hideo Nomo, I kicked her out on the Huston Street.
Wow, I need to actually do work when I am at work.
Sorry in advance for that.

The only real baseball played in the MLB is in the National League. Nine guys to a side. Pitchers are supposed to hit. That is how the game was played initially, and should be how it is played today.
Designated Hitters suck.

[Reply]
June 16th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
To me Liriano is more risky however he could pay big deividends, way more than spot starters. Sry I guess im giving you the answer you dont wanna hear. Liriano- higher risk/higher reward VS. spot starters- lower risk/lower reward.
[Reply]
June 16th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Dont forget that pre-surgery Liriano was pitching better than Johan Santana at one point when they were on the same team. If hes even 90% back hes still real good.
[Reply]
June 16th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
well i asked because I thought for a moment about playing nasty fantasy ball. i.e. picking up Liriano and dropping him right after, hence always putting him on waivers instead of free agent pool, wash, rinse, repeat. Make someone expend their waiver claim (which I assume they would be more hesitant to do). But I decided not to, since most people in my league are my friends.
[Reply]
June 16th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
@ WakeNBake
Why should pitchers hit? Because that is baseball. That is how major league baseball was played since its inception in 1871. The DH was manufactured in 1973. The DH was instituted to artificially enhance offense in baseball. It changed the way the game had been played for over a century.
It has nothing to do with a double standard. In the sport of baseball, each team’s lineup has 9 players, and all 9 of those players are supposed to both field and hit.
American League baseball is not real.
[Reply]
June 16th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Guys – sorry to interrupt, but what do you think about Bruce + Renteria for Tejada?
[Reply]
June 16th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
@SaltyBiscuits: Just beacause thats how it was started doesnt mean its the right way and should never be changed.
The origianl United States Constitution allowed people to own slaves, does that mean its right beacsue thats how it was 100′s of years ago, NO!
Baseball should change with the times, Just like football where Offense and Defense are done by seperate players. Its a specialty to either hit or pitch. Just because you are great at one doesnt mean you can do the other. So to me American league baseball is modern better baseball, National league baseball is old and out dated. Catch up with the times already.
[Reply]
June 16th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
@ mike
Wow.
So pitchers hitting = slavery? Amazing analogy.
Baseball should change with the times? What the hell does that mean? “The times” weren’t the reason the DH was created. It was the greedy owners who wanted more Home Runs and as a result, greater attendance. National League baseball has more managerial strategy involved because it requires better management of your bench players.
So because Football has different Offensive and Defensive players that means Baseball should too? What about Basketball? They play both. Maybe we should put hoops in the outfield? Baseball players play the field (pitcher is just another position, albeit unique) and hit. That is what baseball players do. That is what you did in little league.

@SaltyBiscuits: basketball players have no choice, what are they gonna do substitute every player after every basket? Theres a big difference between little leage and professional baseball. In little league you play both because you are learning the game. I assume every MLB player has full knowledge of how to play already. They are professional pitchers, P-I-T-C-H-E-R-S what does that have to do with hitting? Im glad you liked the analogy.
