Here, friend, are some catchers that I will be targeting at my 2012 fantasy drafts after the top options are gone.  I’m not going to get into the strategy of punting catchers.  Been there, half-drunkenly wrote that.  Click on the player’s name where applicable to read more and see their 2012 projections.  This is a (legal-in-most-countries) supplement to the top 20 catchers of 2012 fantasy baseball.  Now, guys (and four girl readers), I am not saying avoid catchers like Wieters, J.P. Arencibia, et al (which is not the Israeli airline).  To get on this list, you need to be drafted later than 200 overall.  And, to preemptively answer at least seven comments, yes, I will go around the entire infield, outfield and pitchers to target very late.  Anyway, here’s some catchers to target for 2012 fantasy baseball:

Devin Mesoraco – I’m not saying Ryan Hanigan will be the starter because it will be easier for Dusty Baker to spell on the scorecards.  Okay, I am saying that.  Even with my concern that Hanigan will be the starter, I’d draft Mesoraco as a flyer to see if he breaks camp with the team and steals enough ABs to be valuable.  Remember, Mesoraco could be Jesus Montero in a better ballpark.  To translate that into Pig Latin:  E pluribus unum piggy jowls en Cincy es muy bueno.

Chris Iannetta – The Sciosciapath has Bobby Wilson, ye of a 2 homer power and a .206 career average, backing up Iannetta… So Iannetta probably will only get 350 at-bats and be replaced every 3rd inning for defense.  I’m only half joking.  It’s up to you to figure out which half.

Wilson Ramos – I wonder if his kidnappers wore catcher’s masks.  I wonder if they were motivated at all by watching the movie, Celtic Pride.  I wonder if they kidnapped Ramos because they were just big fans of Jesus Flores.  I wonder if before they grabbed Ramos they gave each other the steal sign.  I got questions, y’all!

Geovany Soto – He has around 20 homer power.  Or nearly what Buster Posey has given us in the past two years combined.  Cust kayin’.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia – I was talking to a friend recently and they reminded me of a word I used to say all the time — beyotchabatukis.  It’s pronounced like beyotch-a-bah-tukis.  It’s someone you can’t stand who you deal with because they offer you something of greater importance than your general hatred of them.  That guy that always refer to you as “kid” but can get you into a club for free?  Total beyotchabatukis.  I’d say a cheap catcher that can offer you some cheap power would be one, so Saltalamacchia is a beyotchabatukis.  It’s not in the dictionary, don’t try to use it in Words With Friends.

Russell Martin – He seems like he’s about 47 years old, but he’s only 29 and he just came off a season where he went 18/8.  Hey, I’m not a fan either, but you don’t need to be a cyclops with a monocle to see his value with an ADP in the 300′s.

Ryan Doumit – I’m most excited to draft Doumit this year.  Sure, it’s compared to Saltymochachino and Martin, but still.  If he can somehow get 400 ABs he could easily be a top 7 catcher for all the kingdom of baseball and its giant PED moat.

Salvador Perez – Part of me is surprised I didn’t write any sleeper posts about these guys except Devin Mesoraco.  Another part of me doesn’t think anyone wants to read a whole post about a catcher who I project for 10 homers.  I just vomited in my mouth, then swallowed it and burped out, “Salvador Perez.”

Josh DonaldsonWho?  Is this Sam Donaldson’s crossdressing son?  No, Random Italicized Voice, this is Scott Sizemore’s 3rd base replacement.  So why is he in the catchers to target?  Because he has catcher eligibility in CBS, Yahoo and ESPN.   Scott Sizemore’s knee is like Tom Sizemore’s life — needs serious rebuilding.  With him out for the year, Josh Donaldson is the favorite to play 3rd.  In Triple-A, he had some huge numbers — 17 homers, 13 steals.  Those numbers would be terrific, but probably unrealistic.  I’ll give him 50/12/60/.240/7 in 500 ABs.  Sounds like blech with a side of belch, but in two catcher leagues he could pay dividends.  He could even out-produce Suzuki.  Wait, can he bend in his dress?  It’s not the same person.

  1. If “aal” and “xi” will work in Words, then beyothcabatukis should count as well.

That’s important information, thanks Grey. It’s either Wieters or punt for me this year. My 20 team draft is Monday. do you have a player or two you are targeting later in a deep league you can pass along?

@giantjj, Depending on how many bench spots you have, the “team” catcher strategy is always good in leagues that big. Assuming daily lineup changes also, Mesoraco/Hanigan, Hernandez/Rosario (once he’s called up), Salty/Shoppach, etc. would work pretty well. Just make sure to put in whoever’s playing that day before lineups lock.

I could use an opinion or two on my keeper direction.
12 team, 5×5 (**OBP instead of avg)

    weekly h2h 1-win
    Start 9 bats (Util); Start 4SP & 2RP

I can keep 5 and enter the supplemental (with the #2 overall pick), or keep 7 and wait for the normal draft

    1. SS/3B Hanley
    2. SP Kershaw
    3. SP King Felix
    4. 3B R Zimmerman
    5. OF N Cruz

    6. OF H Pence
    7. ??
    2B/OF B Zobrist (.370 obp last year)
    2B R Weeks
    OF Krispie Young

Or do I toss back Pence, keep 5, and hope for a worst case of taking him back with #2 in the supplemental and hope for taking a better player with the 2nd supplemental pick (then compared to Zobrist, Weeks, etc)?

    Thanks!

Off the subject but to revive a conversation from a few days ago.

Mock drafts are useless. I did my first one last night (5×5, 12 team) and I’ll give you 2 examples. Keep in mind that almost everyone was active and stayed for probably half the rounds.

    1) Verlander was selected first. Not first pitcher, but first overall. 2 more pitchers taken in the first round.

    2) I got Jay Bruce towards the end of the 7th round. Thank you CBS Top 300 rankings.

    3) I got Konerko in the 6th round. Not completely ludicrous but very surprising.

I wound up with an incredible team that would be impossible to assemble for my real fantasy team. So i guess the question is, when is the Razzball Mock Draft App opening for biz?

    Thanks dude.

  10. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

Here’s a followup to my question from last night. I’ve quoted it for your viewing pleasure.

“Ok, so it’s almost time to finalize my keepers in my 16 Team H2H. This is what I’ve got:

    1) Tulo
    2) Lawrie
    3) Stanton
    4) Lester
    5) ???

Of my remaining players, I can keep one of the following: Moose, Konerko, Kimbrel, Kennedy, LoMo.

I could also swing a deal for Moore (swapping middle round picks). Or a deal for Haren (swapping my 5th-ish rounder for his 8th-ish). And the guy with MadBum has said he’s on the block, but hasn’t responded to my email about him.

What do you think is the route I should go with this? Thanks!”

You responded by saying grab Bum or Moore if I can. What round of draft picks would you feel comfortable losing for each guy? FYI – Our first five rounds are our keepers, so if you were dealing round 5, it would technically be round 10. Also, would you avoid Haren? And if I can’t make one of those trades, do I stick with Kimbrel? I HATE keeping a closer, but I would assume he’d have some good solid trade value early.

Thanks, and sorry for the long post.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@Wilsonian, Keep Kennedy if you can’t swing a deal… I’d give an early round for Bum or Moore. Say 3rd…

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@Grey, thanks, I’m going to try to swing a deal for Moore. The guy with Bum put him on the block and hasn’t responded to either one of my trade offer emails. Even though you don’t like Kennedy this year, you’d still keep him? And what about Haren…he’s ranked much higher than Moore and Kennedy in your rankings?

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

@Wilsonian, Haren’s older, you already have Lester… Kennedy I don’t like this year but is young… Your last selections aren’t great. Kimbrel is the best closer, but he’s a closer.

          • Wilsonian says:
            (link)

@Grey, exactly. I hate keeping closers even though he’s the best. And the age thing…that’s exactly why I won’t keep Konerko. I like ‘em young (hehe) especially in this deep of a league where you can keep them forever.

I wish the jackass with Bum would respond, but he won’t so I’ll probably get Moore. Thanks for the help.

Grey you sparking diamond of a man –

I already asked you this once and you already answered, so sorry for being so redundantly redundant. But the answer we agreed to the first time round was arrived at with reservations (we were reluctantly reluctant). And you know I think I may have done changed my mind.

    In case you don’t remember:

    I get 6 keepers in a H2H 6×6 (with Holds and OBP) 10-team league.

    My first 5 keepers:

    Justin Upton
    Votto
    Adrian Gonzalez
    McCutchen
    Verlander.

For spot 6, my options are Bruce, Pence or Andrus.

We agreed, with noses pinched (as it were!), that Andrus was the way to go – every higher ranked SS will be kept by other squads in my league, so dropping Andrus would likely mean a drop in the SS tiers, I’m already keeping two OFers, and I guess there’s not another reason.

But I feel this was wrong.

I think I should go Bruce. Or even Pence (whose OBP is by far the best of the trio). Elvis has the steals but there are other steals options down the line at short. And it’s not like he’s going to hit .340 – or even .285? – to go along with his single digit homers, yawnstipating RBIs and underwhelming .340ish OBP.

SO – Talk me from the ledge man for God’s sake.

    Thank you.

@Grey, But you’re saying better to start off with a top tier catcher and not leave myself with a Salty/Doumit tandem? Sucks to blow an early pick on a freakin catcher.

          Grey says:

            (link)

@Grey, I punted both catcher spots.

So, the Martin and Doumit tandem that I have in one league won’t lead me to victory?

I know it’s ugly, but I essentially added Swisher as an extra OF in an OBP league rather than take Soto over one of those schmohawks. Or, I could have taken Miguel Montero instead of Alex Gordon.

I guess I think it’s OK to punt in two-catcher leagues as well.

I have a rather lengthy “Drafting a SP” question for you. I have the 2nd pick in a 12 Team Yahoo League and I was hoping to grab my first SP in the 4th round (Pick 47). Unfortunately, I think Price, Lester and Gallardo are going to be gone (keepers move these guys up). I am already keeping Strasburg in the 12th Round, but I wanted to ask if a staff of say Latos, G. Gonzalez, Strasburg, Sanchez and Scherzer would be adequate.

    Thanks much Grey.

It’s a keeper league where each team gets 5 franchise guys (kept in rounds 1-5). And everyone else can be kept at a 3 round penalty (i.e 15th rd pick in 2011 can be kept as 12th rd pick in 2012).

I’ve got Matt Moore as a 22nd round keeper this year (lots of good years ahead). How much is he worth? Is Moore + Aramis (franchise) for Votto (franchise) a decent starting point for negotiations?
