Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Hey, I can bench Eric Hosmer!  That was the first thing I thought when I picked up Matt Adams.   First stop for Hosmer is my bench, next stop waivers.  Yesterday, our prospect writer Scott said this about Adams, “Despite the impressive audition (in Spring Training), St. Louis sent him to Triple-A Memphis where he’s hit .338/.373/.597 with 9 HR through his first 150 plate appearances… With an advanced approach, solid on base skills, and plus power, Adams has a chance to do damage in the bigs right away.  He’s worth an add in most formats.  There’s really not much else to say, except Grey is handsome.”  I obviously wouldn’t have copied and pasted all of that if I didn’t agree.  In a 12 team mixed league, I found room for him (then again my offense could use anything at this point — I have Brian Dozier!) by losing Anthony Rizzo.  I do think Rizzo will be up soon and is worth owning, but I could only speculate on one “young 1st baseman that will fix my other young 1st baseman problem (Hosmer!).”  With Berkman possibly out a while (as of this writing, his timetable wasn’t clear, but it didn’t look good and he was talking of retirement), Adams just needs to hit to get everyday playing time (please, deity of my choice, let him hit).  At first, I could see him platooning a bit with Carpenter so don’t overreact on who you drop when you pick up Adams, but if you’re hurting at 1st base, get smart and don Adams.  Anyway, here’s what else I saw this weekend in fantasy baseball:

Aroldis Chapman – Hey, he’s now the closer!  Mazel tov!  I remember when he was just a new Cuban raftee and, now, he’s a man.  A real fine chap, man.  He has yet to allow an earned run in 22 1/3 innings to go with 39 Ks.  Man, that is beautiful.  Shoot, I have to change my shorts.  And…I’m back!  You miss me?

Ryan Ludwick – 3-for-5, 3 RBIs with his 4th homer.  Just when it looked like Heisey finally bought himself a longer leash, Ludwick comes along to confuse Dusty.  (Yes, they both played yesterday, but that was only because there was a DH.)

Paul Konerko – After taking one off his face on Friday, the White Sox said they should be able to punim back in on Tuesday.

Jake Peavy – 6 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 5 baserunners, 7 Ks.  No kidding, who would you prefer:  Peavy or Lincecum?  Is it close?

Gordon Beckham – 1-for-4 with his 2nd homer in the last three games.  If it’s not the Rip Van Winkle of sleepers.  If you’re desperate for infield help, I could see grabbing him for your middle infidel spot.

Adam Dunn – 1-for-4 with his 14th homer.  Like one of those weekly Bieber’s been trampled by 1400 screaming Asian girls rumors, the reports of Dunn’s death were also premature.  Rob Thomas would say he’s come un-Dunn.  Fantasy Baseball Blurb Police, “Bieber and Rob Thomas in the same blurb?  C’mon, man, don’t make me ticket you.”

Ike Davis – Terry Collins (who?) said that Davis could be headed to the minors.  All kidding aside, have the Mets doctors checked him again for Valley Fever?  Actually, has anyone but the Mets doctors checked him for Valley Fever?

Kevin Youkilis – Phillies and Indians are “monitoring” Youuuuuuuk.  I found this funny for some reason.  Next time I’m caught sitting outside an ex-girlfriend’s house, I’m going to say I was just “monitoring” her.  Wouldn’t surprise me to see Youuuuuuk moved.  Red Sox don’t want to send Middlebrooks down and Youuuuuuk’s so welcome in the Red Sox clubhouse that Bobby Valentine commissioned Billy Ocean to remix his own song to, “Get Outta My Team, Get Into My Veggie Wrap With Swiss Chard.”

Josh Beckett – 7 2/3 IP, 1 ER, 9 baserunners, 5 Ks vs. Cliff Lee, who went 7 IP, 5 ER, 10 baserunners, 6 Ks, as the two last place teams battled.  The Comatose Red Sox and Phillies fans, that conked out the day before the season started, blink their eyes open, “Don’t you mean first place?”

Jarrod Saltalamacchia – 1-for-4 with his 2nd homer in as many games, and 7th on the season.  Why do I wish he had 1st base eligibility and I drafted him instead of Hosmer?

Mike Aviles – 2-for-5 with his third homer in as many games.  Thomas Peefuttle who?!  Actually, that’s a made-up name, but Aviles has been good even if you compare him to someone who’s real.

Jonathan Lucroy – 3-for-5, 3 runs, 7 RBIs and 2 homers.  Actually, I wouldn’t mind dropping my whole RCL offense and having only catchers.

Corey Hart – 3-for-5, 3 runs, 2 RBIs with his 9th homer as the Brewers exploded for 16 runs.  Elias Sports Bureau said Corey Hart was rated by People Magazine as The Ugliest Man Alive.  Actually, Elias didn’t say that, but here’s something that was overheard at the Stamford compound of Elias Sports Bureau.  “In Accounting, Jeff and Dave have casually joked about switching wives twenty-seven times in the last two weeks for a new office record.  Also, Jeff recorded it a record 17 times to be used for blackmail purposes later.”

Colby Lewis – 8 IP, 1 ER, 5 baserunners, 6 Ks vs. the Astros.  In related news, American League pitchers are fully supportive of the Astros’ 2013 league switch.

Vance Worley – Has a bone chip in his elbow.  He says he’s going to “man up” and pitch through the pain.  Who’s he Bruce Willis cutting a bullet out of his arm and bandaging it up with a shirt he rips with his teeth?  Ridiculous to think Worley’s going to be anywhere near as effective and not just end up back on the DL.

Anthony Rizzo – That billboard counting down is not how many hours until the America’s Got Talent premiere, that’s until The Scer arrives.  The Cubs confirmed yesterday what I was saying on Friday.  Rizzo’s arrival, or arrizzal, is imminent.

Max Scherzer – 7 IP, 2 ER, 5 baserunners, 15 Ks. There’s the eggs Woody Allen was talking about that we need.  Hopefully, if you dealt with the bad half of the schizo-Scherzer, you also got this good half.

Rod Barajas – B*****s ain’t shizz usually, but, for those in deep leagues, B*****s has 2 homers in his last three games.

Greg Dobbs – 3-for-4, and .154 over the last week, but whatever.  I just want to rant about how stupid it is that Ozzie is splitting up Hanley and Stanton with Dobbs.  I get the whole righty/lefty thing, but is that really going to change how opposing managers think when they see Greg Dobbs?  It’s not like they’re saying to themselves, “I’d go to my righty here but Dobbs, who’s hitting .253 against righties over the last three years, will kill me.”  Move Giancarlo into the cleanup spot, I need RBIs!

Josh Johnson – 7 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners, 4 Ks.  After the game, his porn star brother, Gosh Johnson sprayed the team with what everyone is hoping was champagne.

Emilio Bonifacio – Ended up on the 15-day DL with a sprained thumb.  When asked how it was feeling, Bonifacio stayed true to his name and tried to put on a good face.

Derek Lowe – 6 IP, 2 ER, 7 baserunners, 2 Ks to lower his ERA to 2.15.  He said he’d have an ERA under 2 if it wasn’t for Indians fans.

Mike Trout – 3-for-4, now batting .355.  At Sunday brunch, he had a mimosa, grapefruit wedges and a slam & two legs.  Trout homered and stole a base off Bass, something the media is calling “Fish on Fish” crime.

Vernon Wells – Headed to the DL with a thumb injury.  He’ll have some free time now to reply to all his fan mail that is meant for the actor from Weird Science, Vernon Wells.

Alexi Amarista – 1-for-6, with a steal.  He was the piece the Padres got from the Angels for Frieri.  Here’s what Bud Black said Scioscia told him, “The first thing (Scioscia) said was this guy can play six positions, he can feel comfortable with them anywhere, he swings the bat and he has some speed, so that versatility plays much better in the National League.”  Right, nothing at all like Maicer Izturis.  With the Padres now having (n)O-Dog, Amarista has been playing 2nd base.  In the minors, he hit for a decent average with speed.  In the majors, I could see him having a .270 average with 25 steals.  Definitely NL-Only grab.  I’d hold for now in most mixed leagues.

Justin Smoak – 2-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 5th homer.  I told you last week to grab him for his road trip and now he heads back to Safeco, so where there’s Smoak, there’s other options off the waiver wire.

Mike Carp – Has homers in back-to-back games.  Carpe Carp!

Wei-Yin Chen – 4 1/3 IP, 6 ER as he was pitchslapped by Strasburg.  I’ve seen Tony Pena pitch better than Chen.  And Tony was pitching in a Home Run Derby.

Danny Espinosa – 2-for-5, 2 RBIs with his 4th homer.  Going on about ten days of hot schmotatoness.

Jesus Flores – 1-for-4 with his 1st homer.  If you lost Wilson Ramos, Flores could basically do the same thing.  And that’s a promise or my name isn’t Grey “El Toro” Albright.

Stephen Strasburg – 5 IP, 1 ER, 5 baserunners, 8 Ks, but left the start with bicep tightness.  He said he should be fine for his next start.  He’s going to apply some Hot Stuff and then not touch his groin for the next five days.

Mark Ellis – Will be out for at least 6 weeks as the doctor performed an emergency procedure on him to relieve pressure in his leg.  The Dodgers will turn to Justin “The Inspector” Sellers and Elian “I Wouldn’t Mind Checking Out Miami Again” Herrera.  Elian and Sellers aren’t much to look at outside of deep NL-Only leagues, especially if they’re sharing time.  Since Ellis will be out, the Dodgers may now ask Flavor Flav to no longer stand above Dee Gordon’s head with his giant ticking clock.

Jeff Francoeur – 4-for-4, but I’m giving two of them to the now batting in the seven hole, Hosmer.

Wade Miley – 7 IP, 0 ER, 8 baserunners, 3 Ks.  I see you moving your cursor towards picking up Miley.  Stop and back away from your computer.  Go splash some coffee on your face.  You’re sleepwalking.

Brandon McCarthy – Went to the DL, but the A’s found no damage to his scapula.  Sounds like there should be a chicken in there, i.e., Chicken Scapula.  BTW, when you’re in a fancy restaurant and the waiter rolls up the cart carrying your entrees, make sure you say, “They weren’t joking when they said it was all a la carte.”  It’ll make you look classy.

  2. Hello Grey — Is Adams worth using the 9th waiver priority in a 5×5 16-team one-year roto league where he’d replace Blanco in the UTIL slot? My team is competitive despite the fact that I’m not in the top 7 in any hitting category except AVE, which means I’m only OK in both speed and power categories.

Or if I miss out on Adams is Rizzo worth grabbing and stashing in that spot?

    Many thanks!

    • @Enrique, Obviously, just holding onto Blanco is also an option, as is maybe switching him out for Campana or Rajai Davis. Not much else tempting on waivers.

  5. Hi Grey (or anyone else who knows) — This is really a rules question, but I can’t find the answer anywhere. Do you have an idea how Yahoo! calculates position eligibility for the following season on players out for all or most of the season on the DL?

The situation: I’m in a deep Yahoo! league that allows us to keep two players drafted after the 5th round at a penalty of one round (i.e. a fifth round player this year costs a 4th round pick next year). Players picked up off of waivers cost a 12th round pick.

Victor Martinez was not drafted, and would make an interesting keeper if he costs only a 12th round pick — but only if he retains C eligibility. If he comes back this year to DH for a few games in September will be be only a DH next year? If he doesn’t play at all this season, what will he be listed as in 2013?

    Many thanks….

    • Blue says:
      (link)

@Enrique, If he doesn’t play this season, he will retain his catcher eligibility. However, if he plays this season and doesn’t catch the required games (5 or 10, don’t remember), then he will lose his catcher eligibility..so it’s a risk

I’m officially freaking out about my closer situation..

Marshall …how long before he is droppable?
Santos…should he grab the closer job when he gets back?
Walden…chances he gets the closer job back soon?

Its sad when my most reliable closer on this team is H. Rodriguez and another of my teams with Broxton, Aceves and Fuetes is doing just fine. Ugh!

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@Melvin Emanuel, Marshall is droppable… Santos should be owned… Walden might, hard to say…

    • Bill S. Preston, Esq. says:
      (link)

@Melvin Emanuel, Yep, most of us are in the same boat. I’m actually in the lead in saves (though probably not for long) in my 12 team league with just Aceves, Rodney, and Downs as my remaining closers. I’ve now lost Farnsworth, Robertson, Marshall, and Street.

    • Moscowitz says:
      (link)

@Melvin Emanuel, well if you play in a hold league you can keep Marshall as he would make for a fine setup man with a few saves here and there. If holds dont count in your league, drop him.

Santos will get the job back. Cordero is just miserable and Janssen is not a longterm solution. He is pitching good though.

Walden could end up winning that job back. The only question is what if Frieri gets a chance to close and does a superb job? He’s got the stuff.

H-Rod is just a flame “thrower”. Yes, a thrower, not a pitcher. He will overwhelm some batters with pure power but his “throws” are flat and batters adjust to those kind of shortcomings. As soon as he tries to go over to finesse pitches, he hits the dirt. He will kill your ERA and will take a seat the day Storen starts throwing the ball.

Broxton will be fine, a few lapses here and there but he will be fine.

Grey , as it turned out , was one year premature in predicting berkman’s demise from fantasy relevancy .

now , you can get away , once in a while , with blaming your troubles on

sooner or later the karma bug is going to crawl around and bite you in
the azz , and end up infecting all those around you .

if you’re relatively new to this site , well , i feel some sympathy for you .

@chata, Eh, I remember that guy from last year, but Grey changed his outlook on the puma coming into this year. Obviously I knew he was an injury risk, but I drafted him because grey had him ranked #57 overall and I was able to get him after pick 75 in both of my drafts. Here’s what grey had to say about Berkman during the preseason…

        57. Lance Berkman – You know what’s gonna be weird? When I don’t have a 1st baseman yet and Berkman’s name pops up in my queue. That’s gonna be awkward after all the bad things I said about him last year. 2012 Projections: 80/24/95/.275/3

@Tony, Meant Matt…..looks like my Yahoo settings have him in the forced players list so those idiots still are showing he has not been called up to the majors as that’s when the player becomes available.

Maybe after 50 AB they will unlock him.

          • @2 Cups 1 Braun, Yahoo! makes a player who has not yet been on a team’s 25-man roster available only after he’s played in his first game. Adams played last night and so should be available from today but you needed to wait for the league to reset (when the standings are updated to include the previous night’s results) but he should appear on waivers, which means you’ll have to make a waiver claim for him or risk waiting to see if he clears waivers.

Anyway, take a look: he should be there now.

            • 2 Cups 1 Braun says:

@Enrique, Thanks. Yea I saw him after about 6:15 AM EST so I guess it was just a matter of Yahoo’s system updating.

@2 Cups 1 Braun, i grabbed him last night after he rifled the first big league pitch he saw back up the middle… he was available in my yahoo lg right away.

                • @Tony, It depends on each league’s settings, but the default setting for Yahoo! leagues is for a player to be available from the start of the year if he’s on the 25-man roster, and from the day following his first appearance if he’s not.

    • chata says:
      (link)

      @Awesomus Maximus,

      cagnof !!

while all others were preoccupied with chasing closers , i zagged .
the catcher spot is a veritable hot-bed for hitting stats this year ,
allowing for some unique match-up opportunities .

i understand the philosophy of not carrying an extra catcher , but ,
this year , especially in deep leagues , catchers are the best options out there on the fa list … (i’m usually looking for rbi help , without the
      batting average drain) .

my personal favorite , thus far , has been a.j. ellis for my ‘ron popeil’ guy .
i have him in 3 leagues … but it took until the 2nd week of may to ‘find’ him .
but in my other league , where i waited anxiously for j. montero to finally attain catcher eligibility , i ended up with lucroy (almost dropped him for
ellis) and reverted back to plugging in jesus at my utility spot , where he started .

salty , j.p. … and i’m sure there are others out there .

      • Chillmodious says:
        (link)

@chata, Yes, CAGNOF indeed! I punted catcher on draft day and took Lucroy. He was doing nothing wrong, but about 2 weeks ago I got tired of all the resting and platooning with Kottaras that I dropped him for Ruiz. This was actually an upgrade despite the fact that Lucroy only got hotter and actually cemented more playing time with his efforts (and all the injuries on the team). Then this weekend rolls around and I picked up Arencibia (JP!!) to be my catcher because Ruiz is mashing to the point where he’s a better fit for my Util slot than just about any Free Agent out there. With the benefit of hindsight, I actually see a scenario where it wouldn’t be crazy to be carrying Ruiz/Arencibia/Lucroy at the same time. If that doesn’t speak to CAGNOF!, I don’t know if anything ever will. [Nevermind the fact that Flores/Yan Gomes/Beef Wellington/Salty are all available in my 12-teamer]

@anyone….Is it just me or do any other Carlos Santana owners get the feeling this guy is not the premier (hitting) catcher once thought. I’m finding myself wanting to move him.

    • Hunter says:
      (link)

@CDubya, For fantasy, I don’t think he is worth the top 5 round pick in a one catcher league that he has been taken as…unless maybe you’re in an OBP league.

      • CDubya says:
        (link)

@Hunter, yeah, I’m in a standard 5×5 league and I keep seeing the numbers Lucroy is putting up, albeit his numbers from yesterday help. But even so, his average looks decent, the piwer is there and his minor league stats are fairly comparable to Santana, minus a bunch of homers in one less season.

    • Chillmodious says:
      (link)

@CDubya, With Catchapalooza currently in effect, the stock of all “top-tier” catchers has taken a huge hit. Maybe the dual C/1B eligibility helps, but I can’t see a savvy owner trading anything meaningful for Santana when the likes of Lucroy/JP!/Salty/Flores are available in most mixed leagues.

Okay, I gotta problem. Normally I would start either Berkman or Allen Craig at first base. That ain’t happening this week.

It’s a weekly lineup league with the normal five categories PLUS 2 more categories: Doubles+Triples and Walks.

Who deserves the start at first base this week?

Carlos Pena, Ike Davis, or Mitch Moreland?

I know these choices suck. The fantasy gods asked if I’d like to lose Berkman or Craig. I said I’d prefer to lose Berkman, and their answer was “Well, you’re gonna lose both.”

So my choices suck, but I still have to make one. A little help, please?

    Gray,

My team is in first purely because of my hitting as I’m almost deadlast in every pitching category. Jim Johnson is single handidly winning saves for me…WTF!?!?!

    Yahoo 12 Team Standard 6X6 H2H
    C: Yadier Molina
    1B: Joey Votto
    2B: Dan Uggla
    SS: Hanley Ramirez
    3B: Will Middlebrooks
OF: Andrew McCutchen, Mike Trout, Adam Jones
    UTL: Bryan LaHair, Adam LaRoche
    Bench: Eric Hosmer
    2SP: Jon Lester, Yovani Gallardo
    2RP: David Robertson, Jim Johnson
4P: Ricky Romero, Max Scherzer, Matt Moore, Jamie Garcia, Derek Holland, Roy Oswalt, Felipe Paulino, Sergio Santos
    DL: Evan Longoria, Desmond Jennings

First, should I pick up Rizzo? Second, should I pick up Bauer, Hultzen, or Reed? Who would you drop? I’m thinking Hosmer and Paulino (Scherzer bought himself another week or so). Third, yes I’m full of questions, would you trade LaHair and Molina for CJ Wilson and Soto (who I would drop for Lucroy)?

      @Jack,

I’d drop Paulino or Oswalt for Addison Reed for sure, if that’s which Reed you’re talkin about. You only have 1 closer for at least the next 2 weeks, and Reed is doing great.

    • @Jack, I’d drop Paulino for Reed, like jack said above. I also think you need to try to engineer a 2-for-1 deal where you pair one of the OF you have plus a good name pitcher who has you pulling out your hair at night (I’m looking at Gallardo, but it could be Scherzer — a lot of buzz on him after last night — or even Oswalt once he announces he’s landing somewhere — he’s only going to give you half a season given that he’ll have a couple of rehab starts and then need a couple of MLB starts to get up to speed) for a stud pitcher like Beachy or Bum. That improves your pitching, doesn’t hurt your hitting much, and opens up a roster spot for you to pick up Bauer or Rizzo.

    @Grey:

    Things I’d like to mention:

1.) Bauer is looking nastyyyy lately, going 8 ip with 11
k’s and only 1 bb in his first start at AAA. Over his last 3 starts, he has allowed 1 er over 24 ip, good for a 0.40 era, and has drastically cut his BB/9 (which was his only bugaboo). I like his chances of being called up in early June.

2.) I think Dexter Fowler is about to go HAM. He looks like he is finding his groove at the dish, and the power is finally showing up like the scouts had predicted (5 hrs so far). Now that he is past his seemingly annual early season struggles, would you endorse Fowler as a BUY?

3.) I currently have a mustache for the first time in my life.

    3B – Moose (11)
    SS – Castro (9)

CI – Alonso (Morse (1) will slot here)
    OF – Pence (24) Stanton (27) Gordon (17)
    UT – Melky (4) de Aza (1)

    SP’s Weaver (32), Gallardo (27), Beachy (1), Zimmer (15), McDonald,

Im leaning towards Alonso, LaHair or Avery. I just grabbed Avery in hopes of speed because Gordon cant get on base to steal a base. A couple days off/rest gonna help out Speedy D or is he destined for AAA. Clearly dont wanna drop him due to $14 price tag.

Need some opinions on how to respond to this trade offer.

I sent a league-wide email stating that I would deal some of my useful pieces for some guys that I think might boost my keepers for next season (this is in my 16 Team H2H Keeper where we keep 5). I said I didn’t want to deal Tulo or Stanton as those were the two guys that I coveted the most, but would only if the right situation arose. I said any of Price, Lester, Anibal, Lawrie, Kipnis, Jones, Stubbs could be had.

I was prepared to receive some offers, and this is the first one I got:

    V-Mart/Vargas for Tulo.

How do I respond to that? I explicitly said I didn’t want to trade them in the right situation (I would if someone like Votto, Kemp, Braun, etc. came along). But what the f**k? Seriously? I’m trying to devise a smartass/witty response that won’t totally piss the guy off, but will make a point that this shit won’t be tolerated.

@Wilsonian, I don’t even think it’s worth the hassle. Just reject and move on. You won’t be able to work out a deal with someone like that anyway. Worst case scenario, you could keep Tulo, Stanton, Price, Lawrie, and Jones (assuming Adam), which would be solid.

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@Big Magoo, that would probably be the best thing to do. I’m thinking of a simple “NO” in the comment line will suffice. And yes, it is Adam. I’m not opposed to those guys as keepers, just thought I’d toss it out there in case someone with some even bigger guy (like maybe an injured Longo) came along.

        Thanks for your input!

@Wilsonian, No problem. Entertaining trade offers is a smart thing to do if you have an eye on next year, and I think that you should continue to do so. I’ve dealt with owners like this before (this year included), and it’s usually a waste of time. You could try to package one of your other starters (outside of Price) and a bat for an upgrade, but in a 16-teamer that would hurt your chances this year because I’m sure the wire is pretty thin. Good luck.

          • Wilsonian says:
            (link)

@Big Magoo, yeah, I’m all for entertaining offers. That’s how I got Stanton and Tulo last year. Although I think I dealt too much for Tulo (Hamilton/Heyward for Tulo and some other piece). Got Stanton by way of dealing an injured Wright when I had Lawrie waiting in the wings. You can make deals, but that was just an awful trade offer. The only thing on his team that I liked was Verlander. And if you’re asking for Tulo and you don’t include him, it’s a joke. And yeah, the wire is THIN. I’m hurting at catcher. There’s no one available. I’m sitting on Doumit right now hoping he comes back. I’ve gone through Mesoraco, Soto, Castillo, and now Doumit. Thanks again.

@Wilsonian, I ALWAYS TRY to keep communication going. Offer something back. OCCASIONALLY–a crazy guy slips up and does something crazy in your favor. In this game, one needs to get every edge whenever and wherever he can. A burnt bridge lessens one’s chance to ascend to the very top.

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@simply fred, I can see that, too. I usually try to do so. But there was nothing else on his team that I liked outside of Verlander. And I’m not dealing Tulo for him, as good as Verlander is. I totally get what you’re saying, which is why I sent a simple “No” along with the rejection. Just to get my point across. Plus I said in the email that I wouldn’t deal Tulo or Stanton unless the right deal came along. If that’s what he thinks the “right deal” is, then we have no negotiating room as it stands.

May not be any negotiating room as it stands on this deal–maybe the next though. :-)

but he did get a couple of jacks for me the 1st day .

now that he’s buried down around the 8th spot , i flipped him for

was concerned about avery not getting the green light ,

Got a bit of a strategy question.

Due to league rules I only get one pick up today. I gotta drop Soto for JP to fill C spot. I’m mostly positive Rizzo will be gone today.

Do I grab Rizzo today and deal with another empty day at Catcher or grab JP and hope Rizzo’s there tomorrow?

    Any thoughts?

    • @Turk Wendell, That’s just a judgement call based on what you know about your league mates and what your gut tells you.

Why do you think Rizzo will disappear so quickly? Hasn’t he been on waivers for a while now? Or do you mean Adams?

My gut: I think one day of an empty C slot will hurt you less than not having the UTIL hitter you want for the rest of the season.

@John, Do you need his future saves or not? Would you rank the guy who you want to DL higher than Farnsworth? The answer really depends on who you are planning to DL instead of Farnsworth and what you really need more. The future production of the other guy or the production of Farnsworth?

@HotRod, Yeah, that’s my point… Maddon is unpredictable, Rodney is hot and Farnsworth was basically Rodney last year (unheralded closer with surprising results). A couple strategy questions, just to make sure I’m sane. Right now I have Yonder starting at first over a slumping Hosmer. Does it make sense to grab Adams and drop Yonder, and if Hosmer hasn’t turned it around by Rizzo’s call up, drop him for Rizzo?

Secondly, I have Gardner and D Huddy occupying my 2 DL spots, but I also own Craig, with Morse and some solid injured closers on waivers. I’ve got good team speed, so drop either DL guy and grab someone on waivers? This is a 10 team H2H league.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Matt2, Not worth claiming…

    • @Matt2, How deep of a league is it? In a deep league I could see grabbing Avila if you had roster space to wait to see if he can start hitting and then you trade him to the poor sap starting Pierzinski or Salty. But in shallower leagues I think there are probably better gambles to take.

    (link)

    Hey Grey,

I hate Dee Gordon. In a fit of pent-up rage, I dropped his ass over the weekend. Then Ellis got hurt, so Gordon’s leash regrew. Gahdoumit! I’ve hated Dee for awhile, but was reluctant to do anything, as SS is a wasteland on the wire. I’m in an OBP league, so Dee’s suckiness doubly sucked. I’m doing ok in steals, with J. Weeks, Brauny, Campana, Blanco, so made the move. (The cat is net SB, btw, so caught stealings count against the total.)

It’s a 14team OBP league with TBs and Holds. I’m way behind in holds too, so I have a bunch of MRs that I’m hoping to vulture holds out of – no one’s on my bench on offense. So, from my team, Arredondo or K. Farnsworth (I have Street and Panda on my DL, so Farns is on my bench) would prob be the two most droppable guys.

Any the hoo, my question is about my SS. I have Scutaro now. Have been looking at his splits, and he (unsurprisingly) has done much better at Coors than on the road:

.333 OBP, 16 Rs, 3 steals in 21 home games
    vs.
.279 OBP, 6 Rs, -2 steals in 17 road games

    SOOOO…

    Two-and-a-half questions.

    1. With the Rocks on the road for the next week, should I drop Scutaro and grab someone like Dozier or Galvis straight up? Or:

1a. Would you reco dropping Arredondo/Farns to pick up Dozier or Galvis, and play them til’ Scutaro returns home in another week, then bench/drop them when the Rocks are back at home? What are your thoughts on using a roster spot to try a home/away bench-start strategy? Not worth it for the minimal difference in results from a MI? (I.e., d’you reco a set-it-and-forget-it for SS?)

    AND:

    2. I Hate You Dee Gordon is sitting there on waivers from my drop, coming off tomorrow. Think I should use a claim on him to re-have on my team, so I can re-hate him while waiting on him for a few more days, to see if he can right the ship? Or just move on from such hatefulness? Ugh.

Sorry for the long story, thanks for the advice, as always!

he batted in the 2 slot the other day .
figured it was just the manager hoping that hosmer could
at least get a bunt down .

10 team league where my offense is pretty stacked..Trout a FA.
    1B: Dunn
    2B: Espinoza
    3B: Hanley
    SS: Hardy
    OF: Braun
    OF: J Upton
    OF: Bruce
    Util: Krispie
    Util: Lawrie
    Bench: Choo, Hosmer

I can drop Hardy, move Hanley to SS, Lawrie to 3B and input Trout in OF. Or drop Choo or Hosmer and pickup Trout. Thoughts? Hold? League also counts hits and TB. I don’t like having more than one bench hitter but I dont want to lose any of these guys..

My hitting stinks. I’ve been scraping by, but would really like to add some real production to my lineup.

Would you trade Alex Gordon and Aramis Ramirez for David Ortiz and Gregor Blanco? I know Gordon and Ramirez were both consensus picks ahead of Ortiz, but they’re just plain terrible right now. And I don’t really care that my UTIL slot would be clogged.

Would the Ortiz side even consider it? I feel like my player values are out of sorts right now.

    3) Would you move Moustakas + an SP (thinking Hammel) for Choo? Moose is thriving.. trying to get good value and keep getting offered crap. Who’s a decent OF I could target straight up?

I got a trade offer today with the intent to take The Freak off my hands. It’s a lowball offer (Holland and Vargas for Hamels & Lincecum) and I will reject it but I was wondering if any two of his pitchers are worth Lincecum & Hamels or one of his pitchers and one of his 2B for Hamels & Lincecum? Here’s his rotation: Tim Hudson, Jerome Williams, Lohse, Billingsly, Smily, Holland, Romero, Pettitte, Zambrano, Lynn, Fister, CJ Wilson, Vargas. He also has Avilies and Cano and my current 2B is Kendrick. By the way, I know this guy and he starts low.

Wow…all the reports on Berkman were apparently wrong. Meniscus tear is the diagnosis. 6-8 week DL stint is the prediction. I was literally about to dump him from both teams because every single report I had seen was that it was official he was done for the year. MLB network was reporting it as a fact and basically doing a tribute to his career.

@Grey, Yeah, huge reprieve for me since I have him on 2 teams. If he can come back, he could be a huge lift down the stretch. He’s looked great in the few games he’s played this year so its just a matter of staying healthy. Really wish the guy was in the AL so he could be DHing .

He’s going to have his knee scoped in Vail CO on Friday and they’ll know more then. Its possible there is more damage they couldn’t see on the MRI.

In my casualty ward of an H2H team, I already have D Hudson and Longo on the DL – and they are the guys in my DL slots.

Now they’re joined by McCarthy and Bonifacio. McCarthy is my control-the-WHIP guy (even if he hasn’t quite done it so far) and Bonifacio is my steals-and runs guy – so both drafted with specific roles in mind.

But because the DL slots are occupied, they’re on my bench, essentially sucking up a roster slot.

Do I drop them to free up space (I’m down to about 6 SPs which isn’t really enough in H2H when we only have 10 adds a week) or just grin and bear it?

    Awesomus Maximus says:

Wild Thing looked awful again, but Burnett wasn’t brought in until a lefty (Pierre) was due up… same as Burnett’s last save. Plus Burnett is the one who let the run score (shouldn’t he have to split that ER with Hank?) and he also walked a guy before closing the game out.

I guess my point is that I think dropping Hank may be too presumptuous at this point.

    • chata says:
      (link)

      @Awesomus Maximus,

h-rod had already thrown a pitch to wigginton .

@Grey, Not to mention Gorzelanny would be the situation lefty if Burnett became the closer. That’s uglier than continuing to roll with a guy who can be lights out for stretches.

        (link)

@Grey, sorry to clarify… you think H-rod sees next save opp? or Burnett?

      • letsgobravos says:

@letsgobravos, You’re probably right, not disagreeing with you. SAGNOF is just the first thing that comes to mind. I am on board for selling high on Reddick, though. Isn’t every closer crappy nowadays?

    Weird format question:

In a league that severely penalizes K’s while disproportionately awarding HR and R, would you drop Cespedes, Youk, or Craig?

I would use the replacement at UTIL and would pick up Markakis, Rizzo, or Adams.

Unless something goes disastrously wrong, I’m in the playoffs, so I am looking for the highest late-summer upside. Youk’s been surprisingly useful in this format (he was inexplicably, and by far, the top 3B in 2010 while healthy), which is why I have been reluctant to dump him.

@Awesomus Maximus, Bee tea dub, it’s easier to read Ron Washington’s lips when they’re covered in white stuff… the way Posada used to paint his fingernails white to make his signs easier to read.

        @Grey, Gotta be Pujols, no?

But lets compare them at the end of the season. We should also put their numbers into Rudy’s magic machine to see who was most valuable based on where they were drafted etc…

Wha… a legitimately funny comment on Baseball Tonight?

John Kruk, discussing the play where Nieuwenhuis ran into Baxter and dropped a routine fly ball, “You learn this stuff in Little League. Granted, you aren’t playing in front of a few thousand people in Little League… like they do here in Pittsburgh.”

    • Prezii says:
      (link)

@Awesomus Maximus, cmonnn kruky is funny!! In a fat sarcastic kinda way.. no? Guess im the only one!

@Prezii, I wouldn’t call him funny, no. Maybe humorous… like “drunk uncle who farts and feigns embarrassment by faux-blaming it on the dog” humorous.

I found this quip particularly funny because he didn’t realize what he was saying at first, and then he added the “like they do here in Pittsburgh.” It was like he was playing his own straight man. Brilliant!

      @Jeremy,

      yep .
      that’s my recommendation , also .

you coming on board the hosmer boat could change the whole
tide of history , and we could all benefit .
      (or drown together) .
