Just when the ship couldn’t sink any lower, the Giants lost their closer for the second time this year.  When it happens once, sure… twice?  I have my doubts. Mark Melancon hit the DL with more arm ailments and received a PRP injection in his arm.  No, a PRP injection isn’t something that you search for on your go-to-p0rn site of choice.  It is never a good thing, especially for a scuffling team like the Giants.  They have already had attempts at the closer with Derek law, Hunter Strickland/ and now re-tread candidate Sam Dyson is thrown into the fray.  I mean, I am no Nostradamus here, but it doesn’t look good.  It’s almost like that 2:00 AM special when you stare across the bar and try to decide if it’s better then going home alone and revisiting that PRP search on that website of choice.  We saw earlier this year that Dyson is not to be trusted, granted that saves are saves are saves, but at what cost?  An inflated ERA and 1-2 save chances a week… maybe.  Hunter Strickland got the first save, but only because Dyson was plucked from the bullpen in 4-of-the-last-5. For a team that struggles to score runs, can’t keep the ball in the yard from a starting pitcher standpoint, and a bullpen with tons of failed attempts at a closer, the benefit just isn’t there.  So if you must, the order as of right now is: Dyson, Strickland, then Kontos.  But for a team with only 16 saves to show on the season, the chase is more exciting than the ownership.  Enough about the city of Rice-A-Roni, and onto the week in Holds and such!

  • Oh no, another BS save for the Final Boss.  Rosie gets his mop and cleans up.  If and when something changes, it’s all Rosey and he should now be owned in every league… yes, your league.
  • Who doesn’t love a healthy Box? Brad that is.  Regaining health and the Rays with a valuable asset in relief in Colome is like a five dollar bill burning a hole in my pocket.   Those looking for RP depth, look for B-Rad to be back and in high leverage soon.
  • Jose LeClerc looks locked in for the Rangers as the go-to, get the out gut in the 7-8th inning guy.  Eleven K’s in the last fortnight makes anyone who still uses the term fortnight on the regular happy.
  • In case of mental instability, add Danny Barnes in the land of Maple leafs.  No more Grilli, and Joe Smith has looked ordinary.
  • Dumpster diving is never a bad thing, go look at Joaquin Benoit.
  • Sometimes lefties just are the way to go with Holds, if you think so go add Boone Logan and/or Brett Cecil.  Both dealing with some minor tinkering and figuring out in their pens is a Boone to their Cecil… I mean value.
  •  If you see Bud Norris on the waiver wire, go add him in a save desperate world he is a save material girl.
  • Sneaky reliever of the week: George Kontos.

    Uh, final boss? Rosey?

      @Daniel Moran:

      One of Seung Hwan Oh’s nicknames in Korea was Final Boss.

      Rosie is Rosenthal.

      @Daniel Moran: sorry. Figured it was common knowledge round these parts. And I put Oh in the sentence.

        @Smokey: yeah odd if you are reading this and didn’t know at least one of those names. not making fun, but i guarantee it’s numerically rare

      @Daniel Moran: Oh and Rosenthal. Nicknames from a time before the last fortnight.

    Would you want LeClerc or Danny Barnes over any of these:

    Bradley, Nicasio or Norris

    Thanks!

      @cutchs dreads: rotation wise I think you can get away with fitting them all in. If they pitch twice drop and move to the next.

    It would be really helpful to include a player’s team in the chart (and with almost every reference in the text too for that matter). I know you spend all day every day thinking about nothing but middle relievers, Smokey, but the rest of us have trouble keeping our Barnes (Matt version), Barnes (Jacob version), Bowmans, Belisles, Bradleys, Brachs, and Benoits straight. A gentle “(Twins)” or “(Rangers)” would go a long way, and really does not take up that many electrons.

    NL only dynasty, can only make roster moves if you lose someone to DL or minors (or have someone coming up from one of those). I can add a P this week and have a competitive team and the pitching cats are where I can move up.

    Best available options are these turd Giant RPs or Urena. Who do you go with? On the one hand, Reed is my only source of SV unless Vizcaino gets the Braves job; on the other, these a-holes could cost me in ratios and a mediocre SP (Urena) has a fair amount of value in my league.

    Ottavino just got dropped in my holds league. Am I missing something here, or did they just mess up real bad?

    I’m thinking the owner just got fed up with recent results….or do you think there will be less holds with Dunn back?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:

      @UtahGreenSox: his pace definitely has slowed, but I would think he needs to be owned

    Hello, just offered Cespedas for Cody Allen. I have Chapman, Rosenthal and Dyson (crappy backend) hate chasing saves. However, I just lost Trea Turner (from my OF). 10 Team Yahoo. Thanks in Advance.

    Good stuff as always Smokey!

    Dynasty full keeper RP question for you. Limited ww picks in a saves/holds league but in need of a RP w/ saves/holds and legit ratios.

    Options include Doolittle, Kahn, Phil Mason, and Kela.

    Thanks!

      @Chud: I meant Kahnle …

        @Smokey: thanks! Yes he is. U think Kela’s shoulder is serious?

        • Smokey

          Smokey says:
          (link)

          @Chud: he’s had previous issues with it nothing seriou but causes him to not pitch three consecutive days and such.

    deep ass dynasty start 7 RP, K/9, relief wins, relief appearances, holds etc.

    my worst due to role at least are maton (doing very well though), yates (also, but farther from holds), jumbo diaz. TB’s getting more crowded and he’s being passed by a few lately even with farq being dropped. drop jumbo or yates for any/which of
    hudson
    middleton
    ollie perez (he’s doing ok and WAS is awful bullpen)
    dunn (been shitty since coming off DL was great before it)
    j.dela rosa
    drake

    my guess just from proximity would be dropping yates and jumbo for o.perez and one of hudson/jorge of the roses

    In a 12 team daily league with category for saves and another for holds. Current pen is bradley Harris Edwards jr rivero Giles bush. Do I hold on to bush? Options on waivers are kela Kelly rosenthal kahnle. Thanks

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

      @Brett: Ugh as tempting as it would be to drop Bush, the names on the wire are useful. Can’t drop a “closer” to waivers though, even after last night until something is definitive about a role change

        @Smokey:

        How serious is Kela shoulder injury and is he the next pickup in Texas?
        Thank you

        • Smokey

          Smokey says:
          (link)

          @lwomack58: if his shoulder was healthy he would be the closer. Is he worth the pick up yes, but nagging shoulder injuries. Suck.

            (link)

            @Smokey:

            Thank you. Had to pickup Dyson which but not sure he will cut it. Looking for another closer and Kela was about the only one available except Rosenthal.

            Would you take Rosenthal over Dyson?

  10. Brett says:

    Smokey going to reask now that Texas is a closer by committee. 12 team daily with category for holds and one for saves. I have Bradley Harris Edwards jr giles rivero bush. Would you cut bush for kela rosenthal Kelly or kahnle

      @Brett: kelly is far last in these guys. kela best for now.
