Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Another week, another 2 temporary save mongers  join the closing fray.  Luke Gregerson and Rex Brothers, of Emmett Otter fame, took over for Street and Betancourt respectfully.  Gregerson has been one of the the best relievers over the last 5 years, and should be a prime target in another month or so at the deadline for teams desperate for bullpen help.  Brothers is in a different situation, he is the heir apparent.  Closing situations are about as funny as my mail going to Chris Perez’s house. Speaking of which, he should be back very shortly and Vinnie really did a Tazawa in his role there, garnering zero saves.  Also coming back this week will be Jim Henderson, who will take his role back without any questions asked.  That sorta sounds like strong arming, but maybe that’s just me.  So enjoy the week to come and don’t be shy. Not you, the other guy, about asking questions.

Hector Ambriz  and Travis Blackley – Combined have 18 holds for the ever-curious Astros.  In a funny world when you look at their 18 holds and compare it to say the entire teams of the Cubs, and the Indians, and the Blue Jays, and the Phillies, oh, and btw, another, and the Mariners – they have more than those entire teams.  Hooray for useless stats.  Just to make things worse they are 5th overall in team total for Holds. records be damned, they sure make Kenny Rogers proud.

Jake McGee – After an atrocious start where he gave up 15 ER in his first 12 innings pitched, he has been unscored upon, lowering his ERA from 11.53 to 6.33, in his last 10 appearances, notching 10 K’s in 8 innings.  For stat sake, he has 5 Holds in the last 3 weeks and is very much looking like a re-rosterable chap.

Jesse Crain – For all the attention that Mark Melancon is getting, Jesse goes unappreciated by stat heads.  His stats mimick or outdo most of Melancon’s on stuff that we can’t really see over the last month.  I think it’s because of the name Jesse personally.  Think long and hard about this: who is the last Jesse you trusted, I mean really trusted? Ventura? Bo and Luke’s uncle? The leader of the Rainbow Coalition?  I think it’s BS and I am writing Hawk Harrelson to get him to be more vocal and more of a homer.

Jared Burton – I don’t know why he really doesn’t use his real first name, because it’s pretty bad ass.  Go check it out. I am going to name my first born button fly, just cause it sounds awesome and I can do whatever I want to make my kid’s life miserable.  Has been stout the past 10 days garnering 5 holds and even an off-day save.  I wish Minnesota was a better team so the world could see how good Perkins and this denim rough SOB really are.

Have a gander at the Holds leaders this year with some added accoutrement stats that I put some Old Bay seasoning on.

Super weird that Melancon has 0 inherited runners

@Terse: has zero mid inning appearances which is slightly just as awkward.

@Terse: he must not pitch well out of the stretch.

So you don’t think Perez’s potential arrest could change things for Pestano long term? Read a Cleveland article yesterday that made it sound like fans want Perez on the fastest train out of town because their tired of his multiple antics & Francona seems to favor his fellow paisan Pestano.

@Clint: arrest was bogus as far as I know. Fans hate him he is third year arb next year so he is going to be expensive.

Your player urls in the document are not matched up to the correct names on many of these guys.

I’m starting a movement to only refer to the new Dodgers superhuman prospect as, Man Bear Puig. Spread the word !

Pestano or C Capps as a 4th RP behind Mujica, Frieri and Jansen? Don’t desperately need saves but of course would take them as they come.

    Thanks!

@AL KOHOLIC: it’s a long shot. Would have to go through peralta

  8. Smokey: In a 14-team 6×6 roto league with holds I’ve got three closers (Nathan, Bell, Holland) and three holds guys (Rosenthal, Joe Smith, Matusz) but I think I can do better on the holds. Can’t loose Matusz because I’m able to use him in a SP slot when I’ve got one or no starters, allowing me to have six relievrs despite only five P or RP slots, and there aren’t many guys getting holds with SP eligibility (I could drop him for Duensing, but I think Matusz is better — but I’m open to being persuaded).

But what about Smith? His rations look good, but he isn’t used as much as I’d hoped. from your list, would you see any of LeClure, Thayer, Affeldt, McGee, Belisle, Thornton … (or not from your list) maybe Ziegler, Bastardo, or Lindstrom as an upgrade? Or am I better off holding Smith and waiting for the opportunities?

Holds league. I was on the K.Herrera roller coaster before his demotion. Now he’s back and I’m interested again. My drop would be Justin Wilson who seems to be cruising. Pick one?

@danny: stick with Wilson. Royals are hot garbage

Any chance O’Day might sneak into the picture for for saves? Hes the only decent setup guy I can see on the wire in my saves-vulture heavy league.

Oh and Trevor Rosenthal is the bomb- hes like a young (and slimmer!) Broxton. Muijica on the last year of his contract? The Cards must be tempted to throw Rosie the closers gug next year, he sure looks ready for it.

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:

@TheNewGuy: O’Day is the off day saves guy based on match up. Rosenthal is being groomed for a bigger spot in the franchise that’s for sure.

Smokey, do you think Joakim Soria will take over 8th inning duties in Texas when he gets back? Any chance he collects a few saves along the way?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@Shake N Bacon: the rangers hope he will be. I’m a little skeptical if he can be a different pitcher with lowered velocity time will tell of course. He will garner some looks later in the year as a day off for Nathan and a looksie for next year as the closer

      • Shake N Bacon says:
        (link)

@Smokey: Cool. I wasn’t sure if he would be worth a stash or not. I’ll hold off for now. Gracias

In a ten team mixed league, is Perez droppable? Gregerson, Brothers available. I’ve got Wilhelmsen, Henderson, Jansen.

Thanks much—highly appreciate your work on this column.

    Smokey,

With Janson now the closer who is the guy to get for holds in LA?

  14. JFK says:

Fishing for saves – have Jim Johnson, Rex Brothers and Trevor Rosenthal, with the following viable options on the wire: Vinnie Pestano, Ryan Madson, Bruce Rondon, Steve Delabar, Jesse Crain, Joel Peralta.

Alright, I was using “viable” loosely – obviously waiting-in-the-wings type guys, with Madson a big question mark with no timeframe for return; and while I like Rondon taking over for Benoit at some point this season, but would prefer an arm I can get some use out of whilst waiting, rather than just sitting on.
Any of these cats seem worth grabbing, and if so, who’s the guy?
