Ah, charts with actual stats are so much nicer to look at.   The first bullpen report of the year was like reading Playboy in braile, ’cause technically we shouldn’t need both hands, but we do.  The cream is rising to the proverbial top when you look at the chart below.  The familiar names are settling in, and if you drafted some of them, or they have been mentioned in the closenado of 2014 for save chances, they probably are owned, were owned  or some semblance there in between.   Middle relievers are like that old cartoon Pound Puppies, yeah they are cute and good ‘n all, but they are still living in the pound in a cartoon.  No homes to go to, no freedom…  Sad, but as kids we were fooled. Yea I just went on a diatribe about Pound Puppies, deal wit it.  Relievers are much the same, they never really have a home unless we give them one.  So give relievers a chance, that’s all we are saying.  So enjoy the chart and the tid-bits I have dug up.

  • Cody Allen has ridden the pre-season helium of the “sub to Axford” to not allowing an earned run in 8 2/3 innings.  If we are ranking MR, Cody’s name has to be in the top-3. If not, the list sucks and is null and void.
  • One name that you don’t see on the list is Joel Peralta, since he has only appeared in 3 games, where TB was actually winning at the time and is lying in the weeds with only 2 Holds because of it. He is still the same effective reliever, holding batters to a .091 BAA.  Hold is a fickle stat, so if the options are there that are doing better, treat it like an SAT question– skip him and come back later.
  • The Yankees have over-taken the Dodgers for the team Holds lead.  Funny, they lose their closer, and everyone gets all shuffled up with roles. Shawn Kelley is doing an admirable job as fill-in, and now I am sure that I have given them the maloik.
  • Quick, name the highest WAR’d RP that isn’t a closer?  Google search Adam Ottavino.  It is a true testament to a RP that has zero wins in relief and zero saves to be that high on the list.  Just for the sake that I am assuming you are lazy only K-Rod, Kimbrel, Uehara and Holland are ahead of him.  Pretty crazy.
  • To continue on the Ottavino love train of RP with 10 or more appearances, only Ottavino, Cody Allen, Junichi Tazawa and Will Smith have a 0.00 ERA.  Not surprisingly all have a K/9 of over 10.

  1. Jiggy Nits says:

    NL only 5×5 Roto.

Edison Volquez (1$) vs Huston Street (1$).

    Fair?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@Jiggy Nits: starters are easier to find then closers in NL/AL, so I would want Street

  2. Phil says:
    (link)

Will Crain be the Houston closer as soon as he comes back?
Is Joe Smith a lock to be the next in line in LA or could it be someone else?
Would you pick up Fields ?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@Phil: No and No, Smith has been getting the buzz but Scocsia stayed with Frieri last time he struggled, we Smith maybe get one or 2 looks in the next week most likely

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@Phil: sorry if desperate for potential saves and have room sure on Fields but we are talking very desperate

  3. fausto says:
    (link)

Getting murdered by strop yesterday was fun. …is he droppable for melancon? with grilli scuffling? im chasing sv not holds. I own frieri, santos, johnson(assuming he gets job back) and strop. Had veras but I don’t think the veras strop combo will even get enough chances to take up roster spots. not to mention they’ve both been brutal on my ratios. …all above you mentioned are available besides brothers. Thoughts?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@fausto: I’d hold Broythers doesn’t look any closer to saves than anyone else esp Johnson who will be back eventually but will still get the off chance in a committee

  4. Lville Jim says:
    (link)

Any chance the Padres move both Street and Benoit at the trade deadline? If it happened would Vincent get a shot at closing provided he continues to pitch well.

    • Goose says:
      (link)

@Lville Jim: They won’t move BOTH – Street would be more likely of the two. But they may not move either, if they’re in the mix at midseason. Their bullpen is a strength, and if/when their lineup of moving parts starts hitting even a little bit, they could easily still be right there contending for one of the WCs all year long…

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@Lville Jim: I don’t see them dealing both thats for sure. Vincent taking over depends on who is left

      • Lville Jim says:
        (link)

@Smokey: Just wishful thinking, I just moved Street in my all keeper 13 team dynasty points league no cash values for Joey Gallo and his second round pick in next years prospect/free agent draft. Have to project pretty far out in this league for potential closers. Gallo is launching major bombs at Myrtle Beach, he won’t be long for there.

        • Smokey

          Smokey says:
          (link)

@Lville Jim: Like the deal for you Gallo will be a top 2o spec by next year as long as he doesn’t become a man without a position.

  5. Travis says:
    (link)

So who are your top 3, then….Melancon, Allen, Ottavino?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@Travis: I have them Allen, Melancon Ottavino yes

      • Battle of the Sleepers says:
        (link)

@Smokey: @Smokey: no, I was asking, ROS are those kind of your top 3? I know you’ve said Allen was, so trying to guess who round out the rest.

In the Ottavino realm, how you like Cecil and Will Smith?

        • Smokey

          Smokey says:
          (link)

@Battle of the Sleepers: Oh ROS is tough for relievers so much fluctuation, def Melancon and Allen. Love Will Smith and Cecil has been getting alot of LH/Rh matchups so he is a great holds guy to own, when Janssen comes back that may change though.

  6. Sniff Test says:
    (link)

would you drop broxton knowing he will be losing saves for Joe Smith knowing he might be getting saves (just to be ahead of the curve)?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@Sniff Test: what other closers do you have? If Broxton is your 3-4th guy sure

      • Sniff Test says:
        (link)

@Smokey: He is my 3rd closer. I have rosenthal and soria

        • Smokey

          Smokey says:
          (link)

@Sniff Test: you have my blessing

  7. J Money says:
    (link)

My three closers are Santos,Lindstrom, and Farnsworth.
Drop any of them for Joe Smth?

From comments this morning, Grey seems to like Smith over Farnsworth.

    • J Money says:
      (link)

You can Dice-K to the mix now as potentially grabs considering he just got the save today. Not sure what to make of it.

      • Smokey

        Smokey says:
        (link)

@J Money: Farnsworth threw twice in last 3 days, Dice K was his throw day so nothing to see there. Smith isn’t going to be long for the job just liek Farnsworth isn’t. If Dane de la Rosa was healthy he would be in there not Smith, so what does that say about Smith.

        • J Money says:
          (link)

@Smokey: Fair enough. That’s why you are the closer guy. Thanks for the input!

          • Smokey

            Smokey says:
            (link)

@J Money: Well now that I got home andf reading more into the Mets situation it seems like Dice-K may get more chances so I was only going by what I heard on radio. Siotuation remains fluid to say the least.

  8. Jeff in Southern Indiana says:
    (link)

Getting killed by my closers in the RCL

    Grilli is in trouble
    Broxton is temporary
    as is S. Kelley
already dumped Nate Jones and Rex Brothers
    and I’ve got Fields, ugh

Can you give me a few sleeper MRs names to go grab that are unowned and could be the closer in a couple months?

    Thanks!

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@Jeff in Southern Indiana: Germen, AJ Ramos Daniel Webb all are MR that I could see getting a look later down the line this year.

  9. Ferga says:
    (link)

I think Peralta was sick for a week plus. Prob explains lack of appearances.

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@Ferga: yea he was and is just getting in some good outings, he may have been dropped after being drafted as a holds ace so be aware if he is.

  10. OaktownSteve says:
    (link)

Dice K just came in to close for the Mets. Bet nobody saw that coming. Assume Farnsworth just not available on back to back days but will wait to hear more.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Someone mentioned it before the game… Still Krazy

    • Nico

      Nico says:
      (link)

@OaktownSteve: Howie Rose made it sound like it’s been something Collins has been thinking about. Not sure what the truth is to that. Either way, could he be a good closer? Potentially more valuable than if he was a starter.

      • Nico

        Nico says:
        (link)

@Nico: Potentially more valuable than if he was a starter?*

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@OaktownSteve: NY radio was saying it was his throw day and he needed to get some pitches in against batters so I don’t know what to make of it, I don’t think much of the mets bullpen as a whole.

  11. Oz says:
    (link)

Is it safe to drop Shawn Kelley? Also is there any pitching prospect you think is a can’t miss closer? I love that rookie-noogie waay too much. Also ditto on should I pick up Joe Smith? Thanks.

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@Oz: Kelley is a drop if non holds league. Can’t miss, not really but 2 guys to keep an eye on are jimmy Sherfy with Arizona and Cam Bedrosian with the Angels, both may be a year away but still interesting if your in a keeper.

  12. Gonzo_The_Great says:
    (link)

Dropped Sexy Rexy in all of my leagues.

Between Hawkins pitching well, Ottavino pitching better, and Brothers looking like he should change his last name to Sisters, I just don’t see the point in keeping him hanging around on the off chance a team that’s going to be .500 at best might some day name him closer.

Besides Melancon, who is the new popular “next in line” type guy?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@Gonzo_The_Great: Allen. Brothers is frustrating to watch for sure, has the potential and make-up just shats the bed

  13. goodfold2 says:
    (link)

in league with holds/RW/RL/ k to bb should i drop either of storen/w.davis for any of
    fien/abad/withrow/kohn/morris/rondon/kintzler/frasor/delabar/walden?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@goodfold2: stay put for now, none of those guys is jumping out to me stat wise to say hells yeah

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

@Smokey: @Smokey: even with storen’s stats being very good, he’s only currently 7th inning guy figured that might make him lower than possibly one of these guys.(although Clip has been bad lately). Also, Barrett is BACK! (deep league announcement). he’s also available here. I guess you don’t think Rondon’s stats will hold up. I have Rondon/Machi in 30 man league where i bid very little to win them, and nobody else even bid anything. they’re both starting out this year very well.

        • Smokey

          Smokey says:
          (link)

@goodfold2: I’m avoiding all cubs relievers if possible strops disease sounds like an actual disease spread by squirrels. Machi is an 8th inning guy and affeldt is still there just getting his legs under him.

          • Smokey

            Smokey says:
            (link)

@Smokey: 7th inning guy for machi. Damn fat fingers and iphone

  14. Ferga says:
    (link)

Got a question for you Smokey…In a 6×6 league with holds. Basically, starters have been bashed so I need help with era whip also. Need to drop 1 ratio/holds guy when Chapman comes back. Peralta, Cecil, Watson,Benoit or Will Smith.

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@Ferga: Gotta say Watson, Peralta will be back, Benoit is great insurance for Street and I love Smith. Cecil is great lefty option in Tor.

  15. SteveNZ says:
    (link)

Hey Smokey. I’m all relievers in my h2h Holds league and have Davis and Ogando in my SP slots.

Is it time to move on from Davis to one of Torres, Phelps or Britton (other Holds guys that have SP eligibility)?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@SteveNZ: well phelps should be getting 1-2 starts coming up with Pineda suspended. Britton has been slowly gaining bucks trust in Baltimore so either one of those would be my choice

  16. AJ says:
    (link)

    Two questions:

1- Thinking of punting saves since Rodney is really my only closer. Was offered Travis Wood for Fernando Rodney straight up, take it?

2- If I don’t punt saves, Farnsworth just hit the wire, do I drop Germen for him?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@AJ: I don’t like punting at all. Trades and waivers happen. Also it’s only week 4. I would rather have farnsworth now and Germen for later

      • AJ says:
        (link)

        @Smokey: So the trade..?

        • Smokey

          Smokey says:
          (link)

@AJ: Never punt is a no to the trade.

  17. tony G says:
    (link)

I have mark teixeira, would you trade him for either gio G or andrew C? Or neither
    Thanks

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:

@tony G: Who else do you have at 1B or CI?

  18. coachgonzo says:
    (link)

Hey smokey and fellow razzballers coach needs input from the scouts, I m in a 12 team roto keeper league that is doing real good on offense thanks to Giancarlo, cargomez, freeman, and My dude Dee. I still have Bruce. C.Davis, Sandoval, and Puig. My pitching is off to a slow start. I do have Jofer and Teheran but the rest of my staff is eh. Wheeler,Skaggs, Eovaldi, and gulp Beckett. Someone has offered me Verlander for my Justin Upton. Thoughts appreciated, and Smokey PUT SOME LOTION ON!

    • Paul Wilson says:
      (link)

@coachgonzo: Take the money and run

      • coachgonzo says:
        (link)

@Paul Wilson: thanks Paul, I appreciate the feedback ,and I was leaning verlander too however Grey advised to find cheaper pitching .w options like chavez. Richards and joe smith available. Ahhh Im torn !

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@coachgonzo: I like being ashy. I would go cheaper pitching also.

      • coachgonzo says:

        @Smokey: Say Word Son!!!

  19. ferris says:

    H rondon over 10 saves?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

      @ferris: 10-12 sounds about right

  20. Dave says:
    (link)

If I have Cishek, romo, frieri and uehara and cody allen, would you do either of these trades

    Frieri for Crick
    Allen for Gohara

    Thanks

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@Dave: crick has looked awful this year and go jars is 2 years away. If your planning for future maybe but you have a nice group of relievers I’d stand pat

  21. Steve says:
    (link)

Do I drop Carlos Torres for Dice-k?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

      @Steve: yes

  22. ColdNeverBother Sonny Gray says:
    (link)

    Hey Smokey

    10 team h2h 5×5 cats with S+H

I realize this is tough to project… didnt see Cecil tied for the lead in S+H but which 3 RP would you want going forward?

W Smith, Siegrist, C Martinez, Octavino, B Cecil, R Brothers, S Kelley, Tazawa, D Carpenter, Benoit

  23. malamoney

    malamoney says:
    (link)

Who isn’t currently the closer that you expect to be closing games by the All-Star break (or around then)?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@malamoney: Germen or Daniel Webb would be darts that I’m throwing at the board currently.

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

@Smokey: so you have germen over torres at NYM then.

  24. Swfcdan says:
    (link)

Melancon or Smith? Whos the better bet for chasing saves right now.

And any faith Farnsworth will actually keep the job, if not who’s next in line. And finally is Johnson getting his closer hig back soon.

Sorry for the endless closer questions, its a closerpocalypse out there!

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@Swfcdan: Melancon for the 15 day stretch that Grilli is gone

  25. Ghost of the Disappeared says:
    (link)

Smoky: I hate RPers . They have destroyed my hopes and dreams this season. They are all toxic – if they pitch for my team.

They ought to have concentration camps for RPs. Getmos, where they do terrible unmentionable things to them for ruining fantasy baseball teams – like mine.

No more just going to the showers for these guys. It’s off to the water-boarding or worse for them – if I had my way.

What makes things worse is that Jay Wrong is in front of me in the standing. That is unbearable!

I’m not blaming you, Smoke. As least, for now

  26. Zar says:
    (link)

    Hey Smokey,

I picked up Hector Rondon yesterday. Martinez and Ottavino are available. Do I pick up one of them in Rondon’s place?. In a 5×5 Roto my ERA and WHIP are looking horrible. Which of them have the best chances at Ks and vulturing wins while not killing my ratios ><

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@Zar: If you need saves Rondon is the right choice, K’s Ottavino

  27. goodfold2 says:
    (link)

in league where i have robertson/kelley/frieri/j.smith/w.davis/storen should i keep holding frieri for LAA reversey handcuffing to smith or grab one of these guys: kintzler (supposedly going back to set up)fien/abad/withrow/kohn/morris/frasor/delabar/walden? same names as listed above, only now it’s frieri i’m wondering about. this is 15 team roto.
