Just found this article where Barry Switzer (former NCAA and NFL coach, and scandal veteran himself) makes a pretty damning declaration:

“Having been in this profession a long time and knowing how close coaching staffs are, I knew that this was a secret that was kept secret. Everyone on that staff had to have known, the ones that had been around a long time. You think that a 13-year assistant … hasn’t told someone else? His wife? His father? People knew. The community knew.”

@Awesomus Maximus: You could be right about Sophie. I just think she's slightly too under the radar. Looooved the moment when Cochran was like, "Yeah, you did actually mock/ridicule me." I will say this, which makes the show so fascinating, Jim is right. Cochran is playing the best 3rd place finish game. It's so hard to play perfectly and I don't think he is. He's made too many enemies and not forged enough bonds. This is as of now, of course. With Jim and Dawn in the final three, I think he might've had a better shot. Assuming it got to that place.

@Grey: Oh yeah, I watched the hell out of Survivor. Great episode. When everyone was acting like they never put down Cochran, you could cut the phony with a 2x4. I loved when Ozzy asked if he'd ever talked poorly about Cochran, and Cochran was like, "Umm... yeah. Remember the first three tribal councils when you were talking about how I should be voted out?" A real life "cool kids get their comeuppance from the nerd they picked on" moment. My wife and I did a slow clap that woke our toddler (not really, please don't call child welfare services). Also reinforced my feelings about Sophie when she almost took immunity. She's so under the radar in terms of strategy, but athletic enough to win a big challenge or two when the big athletic targets are gone. She's in a great spot.

I just can't believe Paterno who could get the president on the phone if he wanted did enough by just reporting it to his higher-ups. He's Joe freakin' Paterno and he basically washed his hands of something that is heinous. @Awesomus Maximus: Agreed. You watch Survivor?

@Grey: @Steve: Interesting, honest, and well written article, but these two things are mutually exclusive to me: "You can say that [Paterno] knew enough to stop [the molestation], and I’d say you were right." and then, "But I think the way Joe Paterno has lived his life has earned him something more than instant fury..." Nothing someone does in their life can earn them a pass at "instant fury" when they knew enough to stop child sexual abuse and did not follow through. No sports records, no charitable donations, not even any number of lives changed for the better... there is no pass.

@Grey: I've heard some vague hinting at that line of thought in some commentary, but I think there is enough meat on the bone that no one is bothering to test any quirky side dishes yet. They'll get to it, I'm sure. I don't ignore the distinct possibility that Paterno wasn't aware of everything that was going on, but I have no doubt that he was aware of enough of it that he is criminally culpable. As his supporters were screaming, "Joe Pa is Penn State!" Yeah, well, when the whole truth about what happened at Penn State comes out, we'll know who to hold accountable.

@Awesomus Maximus: You what no one is talking about also (or maybe they are and I haven't heard it), why did Sandusky retire so young? Wasn't he good at his job? He probably was forced into retirement because the other scumbags were pushing shizz under the rug and knew exactly what was going on. "Retire and we'll ignore this conduct." Had to be what was going on. POS Paterno probably fought for him to stay too.

@Grey: When the trustees said people should keep in mind that there is more to this case than what's been made public, I wouldn't have guessed it would be anything that horrific. If it's true, and the silence of Paterno and others helped this to transpire... well forget about legacy, those people should be in prison.
