3rd base sucks. My apologies to MC Serch and Prime Minister Pete Nice, but it ain’t about y’all! It’s 3rd base for fantasy baseball. And it’s like a raccoon crawled up in your attic and died, then the raccoon’s ghost came back in the form of your dead grandmother and nags you about changing your underwear. Tell your dead raccoon ghost in the form of your dead grandmother that you don’t need to change underwear if you’re not regularly getting laid and 3rd base sucked before, but now it’s even worse with this David Wright getting all iffy up in here, up in here. Let’s face it, only two people per league are getting Bautista or Longoria. You want Adrian Beltre for $29/3rd round? I don’t really want to pay that premium. So we’re left with trying to figure out how to get the stench of this dead raccoon/grandmother hybrid out of our fantasy attic with sleeper picks. I went over some targets for 3rd base for 2012 fantasy baseball. I didn’t mention Brent Morel there because I was holding him back so I could rub over his name with my pink highlighter. Consider this 12-point Razzball font my pink highlighter and go ahead and protest my highlighter color, Westboro Baptist Church! So what do I like about Brent Morel for 2012 fantasy baseball and what makes him a sleeper?
In September of last year, he hit 8 homers. In September of 2009, someone else hit 8 homers. He went on to hit 54 homers in 2010. Yeah, Bautista. I know, that comparison is kinda obscene with an apples and oranges-type smell to it, but wouldn’t you rather smell apples and oranges than a dead raccoon dressed up like your dead grandmother? Even if Morel flames out and September of 2011 looks like an aberration, there’s a chance for something here and he costs you absolutely, positively, adverbly nothing. You want Danny Valencia whose upside for the year is 18 homers or you want a guy who has already shown he can hit 8 homers in a month? Now, Morel isn’t a dog without fleas, Anacott Steel. He doesn’t walk a whole lot and he’s never really showed huge power besides last September. Yes and yes, but to the 2nd negative. Like Zobrist ever showed a lot of power before he exploded (and a whole list of others)? Also, Morel is only 24 years old. On the positive side besides the September explosion, he could steal 10 bases over the course of a season, he puts the ball into play and Morel seems like a fungi.

james loney once hit 9 (nine) home runs in september .
cust kayin’ .
here ,
dispute this assertion :
hanley ramirez’ potential value for 2013 ,
decreases if/when he loses SS eligibility .
@chata, If he gains 3rd base eligibility, then he’s not going to lose value unless he doesn’t hit again this year.
@chata, I’m expecting Reyes to miss enough time that Hanley keeps his SS eligibility, but If not, I’d say decreases. 3B may be shallow, but it seems you can get better stats out of a late flyer than with SS.
@royce!,
much agreed .
@chata, On my fun little spreadsheet I did for my 5×5 league, the difference between SS eligibility and 3B eligibility worked out to about $2.1 (in favor of the SS). It makes a difference, yeah, but not enough of one to get worked up about. There’ll be a lot of factors that will affect him far more than that.
@Rob,
which is why i added the word “potential” .
to take into account whether hanley hits 3 home runs
or 30 , this year .
Gray! Drafting in a keeper league, have to choose between Wieters and Matt Moore…Already strong pitching, all other starting positions filled. Wanting the best player overall. Thoughts?
@Steve, Wieters
His September home runs came off Brad Penny, David Huff, Frank Herrmann, Rick Porcello, David Pauley, Tim Collins, Chad Durbin, and Everett Teaford.
Not that that means anything. Those are the types of pitchers a hitter should be picking on. But it’s still worth noting.
@Rob, Sure, but he still hit the homers.
@Grey, Yeah. And Bautista’s list doesn’t look much better. Jeff Manship, Scott Baker, Michael Dunn, Chad Gaudin, Ian Snell, Hunter Jones, Clay Buchholz, and Hideki Okajima (with a couple bombs off Chris Ray and Jeremie Guthrie in early September).
Like I said, it’s not that it means anything. I just thought it was interesting to note. If it were 8 HR off Halladay, I’d be more impressed. But his list doesn’t necessarily make me less impressed or anything.
@Rob, They don’t even play in the same league! Kidding. I know what you meant.
You see that those Westboro nut jobs protested a Radiohead concert? It’s like they think that god is against boredom.
@royce!, Ha!
Apropos of nothing, Pettitte just signed a minor league contract with the Yanks. My draft is tomorrow night, so I won’t know much more then than I do now. Is he worth a flyer?
@Ralph, Nope
@Grey, Thanks, just saw you answered this question like eight times on the previous thread–sorry!
@Ralph, Ha, no worries….
@ Grey :
to be completely forth-coming ,
morel , pretty much , single-handedly took me out
of contention in my Razzball league , last year .
i successfully ron popeil-ed him for most of the year ,
but when september came around , he whupped my azz .
i just couldn’t believe it was happening .
caught me like a deer in the head-lights .
@chata, So objectively you’re a fan…
@Grey,
no .
now we’re entering into reverse-jinx territory .
i don’t give a shizz what he does this year ,
i’m ignoring his existence .
maybe next year it will wear off .
@chata, Doesn’t sound that objective…
Grey, don’t see any projections listed in the post. What is your floor/ceiling feeling on Morel?
@Hardcore Midget, 20 homers is optimistic, but realistic… Floor’s nothing, ceiling’s 25 homers… He’ll get RBIs and less runs from the bottom of the order. Shouldn’t hurt you in average.

This is hilarious:

We start 4 OFs, and I have Stanton, Cruz, Pence, and Bonifacio (if I don’t use him at SS in place of unsexy Alexei).
From your earlier post today…I’ve been targetting Boesch, Belt, or Delmon…possibly even Pagan given my roster makeup and added cat. My 1B and DH are Votto and Hosmer so Belt doesn’t bring a lot of added value to me there.
It’s a 3-year keeper league where players move up 2 rounds from the previous year and we are in round 12…I’m debating dropping the bomb on Victor Martinez and using my DL spot for him all year (have to be on DL60 to utilize this).
Is what I’m going to get from one of these players this year enough to give up what I can get from Vic over the next 3 years? I hate drafting C so having one locked up for value is tempting.
I don’t pick for 12 picks after this so I have to think one of these guys slips through…probably not Belt though.
6×6 weekly H2H, each cat a win…strikeout/walk differential is 6th category.
I’m wearing my WWGD bracelet…WWGD?
Hey Grey. $260 AL only 5×5 auction league. Bautista and Longoria will be protected, let’s assume all other 3B are available for auction. Keep Michael Young for $20?
@Ned Shakeshaft, Sure, that’s an okay price… There’s a new post for followups.
