Wouldn’t say this is crunch time as much as this is “Your nuts are in a cracker and the season’s closing in and squeezing tight so you better just throw any pitchers that are available because you need stats — stat!” time.  The line for last week was 80 IP, 4.05 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 50 Ks and 3 wins.  Not a great line, but if you throw out Lannan and Francis because you had better sense than me and didn’t start them.  The line comes down to 3.42 ERA and 1.37 WHIP.  To recap, these aren’t guys I’d drop anyone worthwhile to get, these starters are meant for streaming purposes and all of their ownership in ESPN is under 50%.  These streamers are in no particular order.  Also, in the final month of the season, managers juggle their lineups more, so there’s no guarantee all of these guys are listed on the right day.  Anyway, here’s some borderline starters for this week in fantasy baseball:

Friday, September 16th

Philip Humber – It’s really slim pickins on Friday for under 50% owned starters.  I’m not a huge fan of Humber but compared to some of the other schmohawks, well, here he is.

Jeff Locke – On Friday, Locke goes against the Smoke Monster in chess and the Dodgers’ weak offense.

Saturday, September 17th

Jeanmar Gomez – Gets the Twins, has only given up 3 earned in the last 17 and a third innings and when you say his first name it causes phlegm.

Rick Porcello – Don’t trust Porcello at all but he goes to a -co stadium and faces the A’s.

Chris Volstad – In his last three starts, 17 1/3 IP and 3.12 ERA.  Here he takes on the Nats and Strasburg’s three to five innings of work.

Sunday, September 18th

Joe Saunders – In 22 innings vs. the Padres, he has a 2.05 ERA and a .190 BAA.  Kill me now for recommending Saunders.

Matt Harrison – 1.84 ERA vs. the Mariners, though I’m not sure there’s any pitchers with a 2+ ERA vs. the M’s.  Maybe Liriano or Danks.  Schmohawks.

Brad Lincoln – Gave a pretty yawnstipating start last time out, but here I am going back to the well like Baby Jessica.

Monday, September 19th

David Huff – I never said the names on this list were gonna be pretty.  There’s only a few teams I could see starting Huff against:  the Mariners and the Mariners minor league affiliates.

Mike Minor – He just dismantled the Marlins (with a four walk performance in 5 2/3 innings — technicalities!).

Tuesday, September 20th

Jason Vargas – Choices aren’t Grade A when I’m taking on a Mariners starter, but it was between him and To Be Announced.  And I don’t like To Be Announced’s matchup.

Edwin Jackson – Highest compliment I can give any guys on this list is when I think one should be owned in more than 50% of leagues.  Jackson’s one of those guys.

Derek Holland – Last three starts (when this was written), 1.77 ERA and 21 Ks in 20 1/3 IP.

Wednesday, September 21st

Dana Eveland – He/she gets the Giants in Chavez Ravine.  Giants have a .236 average vs. lefties, which is only slightly worse than what they’re batting against righties.  As for the lack of other options today, they were kinda Plouffey.  I almost put down Brett Cecil, but he’s all over the map and not in the good traveling circus kind of way.

    During this critical week+ ahead, I have the always uncomfortable Gio at home vs. Det Saturday, then @ LAA on Friday. Would you rather start Porcello @ As then home Bal., or maybe Billingsley home Pit then @ SD? & a little surprised that Atlanta’s Delgado didn’t make the cut @ Fla on Tuesday.
    && agreed from this morning on how you should address people from now on! Thanks so much for the guidance.

    @zombie: Yeah, thought you’d agree with that. Delgado almost made the cut, but he could roofie and I can’t fix that. I’d go with Gio and pray.

    I love RotoWorld’s condemnation of the umpire tossing Kershaw:

    Welke was wrong for giving the quick hook without a warning to the 23-year-old southpaw and Cy Young Award candidate.

    Riiiiiight… because it’s clearly written in the rules that, should a pitcher get his tits in a tizzy, he’s allowed one free, 90+ MPH, purposeful throw of a baseball at a virtually defenseless human being just 60 feet away. Especially if the pitcher is having a great season.

  4. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Awesomus Maximus: I agree with them. You don’t toss a guy for throwing inside without a warning unless he said prior to the game, “I’m going to kill Parra with a fastball to his dome,” then threw inside. For any pitcher, not just a good pitcher. I don’t think they were condoning it for any pitcher who is a Cy Young candidate, I think they were just describing Kershaw.

    @BookieBob: Don’t you love when you get lost in Youtube or Wikipedia for an hour?

  5. Rodger-Dodger says:
    (link)

    @Grey: Kill you now??! I just picked-up Saunders in anticipation of Sunday. I didn’t want any other streamers posting-me-up for the win! I’m actually really looking forward to that game, but now you have me second-guessing myself. And this is NO time to be second guessing your/myself at this point in the season.

    I’m thinking about dropping Neil Walker too (someone dropped Swisher who looks good to go now) as I don’t think he’s likely to put up any homers or steals in the final couple of weeks… however, I’m very reluctant to drop my last 2B eligible player and counting on Rickie Weeks fresh off of a sprain. It’s time to drop either Walker or Cliff Pennington, who I think is slightly more likely to be useful in the stats… but potatoes to chips… I don’t think it really matters if either of them get played or get dropped. Meh!

    You recommended Huff against SEA. My league has weekly lineups, so if I start Huff I also get him against MIN later in the week. Would you still start him for both?

  7. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:
    (link)

    @Grey: Okay, full disclosure, that was the first time I saw it and (for some reason) I was under the impression that Parra had shown up Kershaw earlier in the game… no idea he’d actually shown up Kuo the night before. Now that I finally have all the info correct in my brain, I agree that the ejection was absurd.

    When it comes to plunking a guy, I don’t care how well the pitcher is doing (on the season or in the game), nor do I care where the ball ends up hitting the batter. At 95 MPH, a graze of the elbow could just as easily be a square shot to the chin… or a strike down the middle, for that matter.

    However, giving no warning is ridiculous. Welke was obviously on the lookout for retaliation, so why not issue a warning at the start of the game? I think that would be lame, as well, taking away the inside pitch… but at least Welke’s ejection would be justified.

    @Rodger-Dodger: Meh! Hopefully Saunders works out.

    @FilthyRich: Sure, pretty risky though.

    @Awesomus Maximus: I think we’re now in agreement.

    @Aaron: I feel like I’m always a cyclops with a monocle. I do like the idea of me using cyclops with a monocle in a few months time and someone stumbling onto the site and thinking I’m talking gibberish.

    @sean: Yeah, without provocation.

    @James: I wish he were in Metco. It’s a’ight.

    Hey man, hope all is well in your world as of late. As always, brilliant work down the stretch and I’ll surely be reading through the offseason as usual. That being said; I hadn’t worried about speed more of the season, but now I’m in need.

    With the JR’s (E Young Jr & Tony Gwynn Jr) scarcely playing( and not contributing elsewhere (I have them purely for SBs), are they still worthy of a roster spot? I’m in 3rd now and not too concerned about wasting a spot or two. If so; which one?

    Also, time to cut bait with Lind? Or roll him out to the end?

    Many thanks Grey and all the best dude,
