Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

I’m bitter.  I dropped Brennan Boesch in one league on Wednesday night for Russell Branyan.  Branyan DNP yesterday.  Boesch hit a homer off CC.  All my ex-classmates at the College of Fantasy Baseball at Charleston are going get on my case.  That’s Waiver Wire 101, man!  I’m chagrined. The problem is someone like Branyan will continue to play after Carlos Guillen comes back.  For one, they don’t play on the same team.  I can’t say the same about Boesch.  I mean, I can, but it would be a lie.  Boesch can hit; I like the little meister.  If Guillen has a setback, I’ll want to own Boesch from H-to-T.  Or if the Tigers make Guillen the backup, I’m all in on Boesch, but I’m going on the assumption that he won’t have everyday playing time when Guillen returns.  Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Justin Verlander – 6 2/3 IP, 0 ER, 8 baserunners, 4 Ks.  Imagine if he ever got his April act together.  But then maybe his September pitching would be a holy eff bomb.  Not sure.  Something to think about while your significant other is talking about their day.

Scott Sizemore – 0-for-3, Lost in the haze of Gordon Beckham’s awfulness is this guy.  Who knew a meth’d out Tom Sizemore would be the most reliable Sizemore this year?

Felix Hernandez – 7 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners, 7 Ks as he got Greinke’d.  The next sentence will be typed with my tears.  I can’t buy a Win.

Michael Saunders – 2-for-4 with a home run.  He’ll be in this afternoon’s Buy/Sell.  Now go to the Razzball homepage and don’t blink for five hours.

Chone Figgins – 0-for-3, batting .185 on the year.  The good news is it’ll be easy to go back to hating this schmohawk next year.

Zack Greinke – 6 IP, 3 ER, 10 baserunners, 8 Ks as he finally got his first win.  Just like the Royals to fire their manager after a Win.  How dare you raise our fan’s expectations!

Alfredo Simon – Recorded his 5th save yesterday.  Now has more saves than Broxton.  Zoinks!

Corey Patterson – 2-for-4 with a homer from the leadoff spot.  He was hitting in the minors when he was called up and he’s capable of getting hot for a week or two at a time.  In the big picture, Patterson is not a good hitter, so if you want in, you get in now.  You’ll need to get out soon though.  To put it in New Jersey terms, you pass through Patterson, you don’t stay there.

Ryan Zimmerman – 3-for-5, 6 RBIs and 2 homers.  Now has 8 homers in only 27 games since he missed just over a week with injuries.  “If he stays healthy, he appears to be headed for a huge season,” Mr. Obvious says.

Jhoulys Chacin – 5 IP, 6 ER, 7 baserunners, 3 Ks.  I blame the weather.  No, I blame Coors.  No, I blame Ryan Zimmerman.  Actually, I blame Chacin and the fact he’s a rookie.  Inconsistency is to be expected when you play with rookie fire.  And Jhoulys is Aztec for fire.  No, that’s not true.  I don’t know what a Jhoulys is.  Could mean pants.

Huston Street – Supposed to be a week away from returning, but Huston Street is paved with a lot of injury setbacks, so keep your excitement in check.

Hank Blalock – Scott Boras is telling anyone that will listen that Blalock can still play in the majors and he wants in now.  Though, it’s probably Boras’s assistant; can’t imagine S.B. has time to worry about Blalock.  Put Teixeira on hold, Blalock is on the line!  Riiiiight.  Blalock did hit last year and should be capable of producing in the majors, but he needs an everyday job.  I’m not adding him anywhere.  If you’re in a very deep league, I could see it.  Like an 18 team league that only uses Scott Boras clients.

Bud Norris – 8 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 8 Ks.  Wait, was he pitching against the Astros?  Norris has upside, but he’s far too inconsistent to trust in mixed leagues at this point.

Hunter Pence – 1-for-4, as he hit his 5th homer and his third in four games. Your time to buy low is 4 PM, three days ago.

Jorge Cantu – 0-for-4 as he bats .146 in May.  Member when I told you to sell him at the end of April?  Member all of the people who commented that Cantu can keep this up?  Wha’ happened?

Jake Fox – 3-for-5 as he got his 2nd straight start after only getting one start in the previous two weeks.  I realize Landon Powell is awesome and all on the Real World/Road Rules Challenge and Josh Donaldson is related to Colby, but can’t someone figure out how to play Jake Fox every day?  He has catcher eligibility!

Mat Latos – 9 IP, 1 hit, zero walks, 6 Ks.  The only player to get a hit was Eli Whiteside, who I would think looks like Hyman Roth if I didn’t know any better.  The good news on Latos, he’s cut his walks dramatically so far this year, which was a bugaboo last year.  It’still early, but he has a 0.97 WHIP on the year.  A very nice sign.  BTW, the “s” I saved in “It’still,” I’m passing that on to you.  You’re welcome.

Jonathan Sanchez – 8 IP, 1 ER, 4 baserunners, 5 Ks and now has a 2.66 ERA and 1.07 WHIP on the year.  I’d be thrilled if he stays on this course all year.  Okay, a Win would be nice, but if I wanted Wins I’d own Tyler Clippard.

Mark DeRosa – Could be headed to the DL.  If it happens, John Bowker will get his third chance to fail in three years.  If only the very forgiving Giants had Jake Fox

Brad Lidge – The MRI showed no problems with his right elbow.  After the test, Lidge said he felt so good he could go for another three MRIs.

    Posted this late in the last thread, so apologies for repeating myself.

    I’m in a keeper league. I’ve been offered Slowey and Heyward for Lincecum. If I kept Heyward he’d cost me $9 next year. Thoughts?

    Do I see a Best in Show reference up there? Nice.

    It’s Trey Hillman’s fault the Royals are the suck this year. It’s his fault the owner makes money hand over fist and won’t pay for a decent free agent. It’s his fault that the team doesn’t give Greinke run support. It’s his fault that the team traded away their best two middle relievers over the past two years and owned Mike Jacobs (puke) for a season to show for it. It’s his fault that none of the current MRs could make a major league roster. It’s his fault that Alex Gordon still slides head first (even after he injured himself doing so). It’s his fault Betancourt can’t catch a popup correctly. It’s his fault Dayton Moore gave Gil Meche and Jose Guillen $94 million. It’s his fault that he has to bat a guy with no speed leadoff because said guy “feels most comfortable there”. It’s his fault Moore let Olivo and his power go to Colorado so he could have Jason Kendall at the same price. It’s his fault Billy Butler plays every day and still has luscious moobs.

    I’m sure this squad will compete for the division now that they got rid of him. I’m just disappointed he didn’t have a shot to trot Ankiel out to the mound in the third inning after (—>insert any Royals starter other than Greinke here) got shelled.

  8. Hi Grey — What’s going on with Eric Young? Do you see his playing time situation improving going forward? I could use the roster spot, but I don’t want to miss the breakout he’s probably capable of.

  9. @Enrique: Just read Eric Young has some kind of stress fracture. That can’t be good for business.

    Question: In my outfield for today I have Torri Hunter (I know, I know), Jason Heyward, Matt Holliday and Marlon Byrd in the Utility spot. My question is, even though Johnny Damon (who is on my bench right now) has had a rough few days, should he get the nod over Torri Hunter and his visit to Mr. Dallas Braden today?

    Hunter is given two stars for Yahoo! calculations against Braden, Byrd has four and so does Damon. My issue is that regardless of how many stars Yahoo gives (and it has been massively wrong even when it estimates five star starts for players), Hunter has been fairly productive this week, Byrd has really only been hitting for percentage only and Damon feels like he is primed for a decent game.

    My roster for today is:
    V-Mart
    Cantu (subbing in for a struggling C. Pena until he learns to hit again)
    Cano (struggling himself, and getting hit with pitches)
    McGehee
    M. Holliday
    J. Heyward
    T. Hunter
    Util: M. Byrd
    B: D. Freese
    B: J. Damon
    B: C. Pena

    Should I switch Damon into play along with Hunter, Damon and Byrd or leave it as it is? Thanks to all…

    @Grey: Team’s been strugglin’ but I’m still battlin’ (I’m savin’ the G’s for you) I have Alcides and Aviles that i can put in for SS and Desmond was just dropped…I also have Frank-Frank as my 6th “closer” on the bench hopin’ for a Feliz breakdown but it doesn’t look ‘ood…drop FF or one of the other SS for Desmond (usin’waiver pri or not?)

    I only really picked up Aviles for the BA cuz of the collective suck on AVE that Quentin, Adam Jones, Bruce, Ibanez, BJ, Snider and Escobar have provided me…and it seems like I can’t have Braun and Zimmerman healthy at the same time…in the words of Jeezy..Ima “Lose my Mind”!!

    On a side note…I went to the Rays-Angels game on Tuesday…got there early so I watched warmups…Matt Garza is a character…he was foolin’ all over the place…he pointed out my fat goatee and loved it and then made the extra effort to come over and compliment my facial hair and gave me a personlaized autograph on a ball that says “Great Goatee!” funny stuff! Then the fact that I was one of the few Rays fans in the stands (front row) and the huge bird’s nest on my face got me on TV a few times.

    @Steamer: At first I thought I would pkg Rasmus/Erv for Sizemore, but then I realized Rasmus = Sizemore light. From both sucking at hitting LHP right down to the 2 spot in the lineup. Rasmus has a better supporting cast. If Sizemore doesn’t rebound Rasmus is going to outperform him this year.
    As an aside, Sizemore doesn’t have the same pitch recognition as previous years and I fear this isn’t slump related. He is swinging at 40% more pitches out of the zone and has 40% more swinging strikes than his 3yr avgs. He is also making a similar amount of contact with pitches out of the zone leading me to believe his swing is just effed up. He’s still hitting pitches out of the zone, but it is hard to do anything with them. His 1st pitch strike is way up.
    I don’t think Quentin or Jones have enough trade value to get Grady at this point and Q has just been super unlucky according to his .180 BABIP. I’d hold tight or find other options. If you can do Jones/Erv for Grady then yeah, but I don’t think anyone is buying that deal.

    The only thing that would move Guillen in over Boesch right now would be money from my perspective. Miggy may squeeze the life out of Mini-Marlboro Man’s body and go punch the butt out of Dombrowski’s chin if they yank Boesch. Brennan has shown no fear at the plate passing another test yesterday beating the snot out of one of the premier leftys in the game. And there’s no doubt he’d be better defensively in left than Carlos. Guillen is the Tiger’s version of El Caballo right now. Way overpayed for what you’re getting, but he gets in the game just based on investment reasons. Ugh.

    Did anyone else notice that ALL of Latos’ success has come against sub-standard offensive clubs? The two starts he had against teams who could hit (COL and FLA) were pretty ugly.

    What the hell is Jose Lopez’ problem? Is he mad at me? Is that why he only hits lefties?

    And lastly, I really wanna drop Brett Cecil, ’cause he’s gonna have matchup problems all year. Cueto, Kennedy, Latos, Masterson, Chacin, and Scott Olsen are all available. That’s not really a question, I just wanted to share. But I’m open to your suggestions.

    Few questions, interested in Grey’s opinion but anyone else’s as well:

    Are people still holding onto Rajai Davis? I’m in an OPS league, and wondering if its really worth trying to get cheap steals out of him anymore. I’ve mostly been benching him…might benefit from a RP that will improve my ERA/whip (Gregerson, Bard, Zumaya are available).

    Also, curious as to people’s opinion on Kearns. Could he be healthy enough to actually produce now, or is he due for a correction? I’m trying to ride this out at least until Granderson gets back.

    I picked up Coglan who was dumped, since I haven’t been getting a ton of runs and am hoping he can shake off the sophmore slump. Any believers in him? Basically it feels like I stocked up on OF options hoping to get 4 good ones out of the mess.

    I noticed that despite being slightly under .500 I’m tops or near tops in most categories, so hopefully that indicates that my record will improve given a larger sample size.

    @Bodymore:

    1) I’m still holding onto Rajai but mind you he isn’t a starter for me. Whenever I need steals or feel I’ve built a big enough lead in the power categories, I slot him in there.

    2)All I know about Kearns is that I picked him up in the RCL a few days ago and he’s produced. Though on that team I wouldn’t get my hopes up I’m guessing it’s just a hot streak that’ll pass.

    3)I watch all the Marlins games and I can say for sure that COghlan is coming out of his slump. Slowly, but he’s doing it. Last night he made good solid contact on all balls that he hit.

    Major League Jerk

    the daily ramblings of men with no professional experience and less social tact

    Major League jerk charged with intentionally vomiting on 11-yr.-old Phillies fan

    Now that’s some vile bile.

    A Phillies fan vomited on a dad and his 11-year-old daughter during a game at Citizens Bank Park this week – and the angry dad says the foul mouth did it on purpose.

    “I turned around and looked at him and saw the most disgusting thing,” said Michael Vangelo, an off-duty cop attending the Wednesday night game with his two daughters and the older girl’s boyfriend. “He was sticking two fingers down his throat, intentionally trying to make himself vomit.”

    Vangelo, a longtime Phillies fan, said he sought cleaner pastures before things took a disgusting turn.

    “I tried to move my kids away from him as quickly as possible but it was a sold out game,” Vangelo, 43, of Easton, Pa., told the News. “Before I could get them moved, he vomited on us.”

    @Bodymore:

    Grey’s line of 100/10/55/.310/15 seems about right. Though to be honest I’d play it out more 90/8/55/.285/12. Up until now he was losing a bit of playing time. So if he doesn’t break out soon, he may start getting platooned a bit with Brett Carol. He’s more of the AVG and Runs type.

    And as for Rajai, if Brett Gardner isn’t on waivers, then I’d tough it out for a couple of more weeks.

  75. Eddy says:

    @mr baseball:
    Yea I read that when it popped up on Yahoo about a couple of weeks ago. That was disgusting. Can’t believe some fans are actually like that. Only in Philly huh?

  76. Bodymore says:
    (link)

    @Eddy Nah he’s gone, fairly deep league. Might drop Leblanc for one of those RPs and see if rajai gets back on track. In order to start Coglan right now, I have to bench Willingham which may not be worth it. I’ve got Stanton stashed, hopefully he gets called up in the next month and makes an immediate impact :)

    @TastelessGarbage: Sure

    @Terrence Mann: Ha!

    @Enrique: First I heard that, yeah, I’d lose him.

    @ViagraFalls: Leave it as is.

    @danimal35: Shouldn’t it be @’rey? You shortchanged me. How about losing Alcides?

    @danimal35: That’s awesome!

    @Schlitzy: Drop Beckham.

    @TheEvilEmpire: Ha… Yeah, that’s who I’d roll with.

    @Dom: Seems fie for you.

    @steamer: Sure, in that order of OFs.

    @Jarrad: Hehe

    @Vince: Buchholz, Latos (at home)…

    @Bob: Lopez

    @willclarkismyhero: If he’s your only option…

    @Slumpbustin: Depends on needs, I’d take CC.

    @Millsy: I’ll update it today.

    @Donnie Baseball: I am. If that’s the only guy out there, sure.

    @NoEmoJoe: Davis for steals, Coghlan for average…

    @Frank Rizzo: Yeah, agreed.

    @Lines: Ha… Kennedy

    @Built to Spilborghs: Eh

    @Air Fanning: Yeah, you could be right.

    @Bodymore: Davis will get steals, so depends if you need them. Coghlan will hit for average and get Runs, so if you need that there ya go. Kearns will fail at some point. He always does.

    @Eddy: I play them both.

    @Frank Rizzo: Unless this is an 8 team league, I’d hold Soto.

    @Jif & The Choosy Mothers: Yup

    @Suck My Wieters: Shields…

    @mr baseball: Ha

    I have Hardy at 2B/SS slot now. Nothing decent out there to pickup. Desmond seems to be the best of the crop.

    However, Felipe Lopez is out there and as I understand it, La Russa is just waiting a few days for him to get some arm strength back.

    Drop Hardy for Lopez?

  87. Tony says:

    - Carlos Lee droppable with wire options like Snider, Quentin and Bruce available?

    – Better CI/Util option? Branyan or Beltre? Need to drop one

    – Same with Carlos Lee, do these guys come around: D Lee, A Hill, Lind?

  90. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Ruah: Grab Bruce, lose Lee. I’d hold Beltre.

  91. GrandSlamSingle says:
    (link)

    Which is the better pickup, Vladdy or Snider? No particular needs, just looking to play the hot hand for next week.

  92. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

    @Ruah: depends on the size of your league on Lee…he could be droppable (I did it in an 8 team H2H), and I’m really liking Snider right now, and I think Bruce will end up better than El Caballo by season’s end – probably MUCH better.

    For CI/UTIL – that’s a toss-up, but I’m leaning Branyan.

    You won’t see Hill’s 2009 numbers, but if his hammy is OK, I can see him still coming around. D.Lee will probably end up on the right side of OK/Decent by season’s end, as well. He’s not a .200 hitter. Lind will be solid, don’t worry about him now. I can’t remember who, maybe Baron or Poon, went into a well researched and thought out rant as to why Lind is still a great OF option and why he’ll end up with numbers very similar to last year – his “break out” year.

  93. Ruah says:
    (link)

    Thanks, Bruce was just dropped. I’ll snag him.

    Thoughts on D Lee? He would also be competing with Beltre for that Util/CI spot.

  94. GrandSlamSingle says:
    (link)

    Crap, nevermind, someone just grabbed Vlad.

  95. Dingo says:
    (link)

    @GrandSlamSingle: How on earth was Vlad even available?

  96. Ruah says:
    (link)

    @Wilsonian: 10 team roto 5×5. I picked Lee up a week ago when someone else dropped him, but I’ve read numberous reports(including the one on here) saying it could be more than just a slump, he could be on the way out. I dont want dead weight because of his name.

  97. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

    @Ruah: I’d definitely take Grey’s advice and drop him for Bruce. On your question about D.Lee over beltre for the CI spot, I’d go D.Lee. I think his average will rise, like I said, he’s not a .200 hitter. He was slow, albeit not THIS slow, out of the gates last season and ended with a great season line. That being said, I would take D.Lee over Beltre. Especially in a roto, where a slump won’t seriously hurt you, it’s just those full season numbers you’re looking for.

  98. GrandSlamSingle says:
    (link)

    @Dingo: Really shallow league – 10 teams, 21-man rosters

  100. Ruah says:
    (link)

    @Wilsonian: Thanks, I’m trying to trim away some hitters as I dont like carrying bench hitters usually. Drives me insane. Just trying to get an idea of real slumps and dead weight. Thanks again.
