Some rejected titles, Will Bill Still Thrill on the Hill?, Illy Billy, Wagner’s Closed, You Can’t Spell Duaner Sanchez Without Nude Ranch and my personal favorite, Billy Wagner, Act Your Age. Billy Wagner, the Mets closer and guy with the first name Billy, reports tightness in his shoulder. He was scheduled to have an MRI, but Billy’s scared of whatever MRI stands for. (Imaging something, but I’m doing this late on a Monday night, so you’re gonna have to bear with me. Or bare with me on a Nude Ranch. Rawrr!) Duaner Sanchez will probably fill-in for Wagner if he misses time. Heilman would be second in command. After that, coin flip! Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Jorge Posada – To the DL. Might be out for the year. Keep a close eye on this. (Oops, I meant to write, “Keep a closed eye on this.”)

Clayton Kershaw – He’s back and going against the Rockies on Tuesday. If you’re thinking about grabbing him, here’s the yay or nay list. I’d prefer Campillo, Weeks, Kobayashi, Kuroda, Wolf (at home) and Hermida over Kershaw. I want Kershaw over Olsen, Eveland, Edwin Jackson, any A’s or Mariners hitter except Ichiro, Jo-Jo Reyes and Jobacum. Finally, I possibly want Kershaw over Guthrie depending on how Guthrie looks in his next start. He was not good in last year’s 2nd half and his leash is short, as they say in the zoology.

Luis Ayala – I’ve pretty much ignored the Fuentes trade rumors because I don’t think the Rockies are out of the division race and I don’t think they’re moving Fuentes. On the other hand, Rauch should be traded. I’ve picked up Ayala in a few leagues as I await the news.

Jose Valverde – 6 ER in 1/3 of an inning. Brandon Lyon, “Man, he sucks!”

Brett Myers – Soda Popinski is back. I’d take Kershaw over him.

Rickie Weeks – HR yesterday. He looks like a 25-year-old Ray Durham.

Randy Wolf – I kinda wanted to make this the lead for today’s post, but I couldn’t justify it. So the Astros are in discussions to acquire Randy Wolf, the pride of Canoga Park, CA. Seriously, you can’t make this shizz up. Randy Wolf, of a 6.63 road ERA is who the Astros want to acquire. Randy Wolf, of an almost 5.00 ERA in Minute Maid Park over the last three years. Randy Wolf, the guy who fantasy baseball owners know to sit in road games is who the Astros are going after. The Astros, who are 12 games back. Why are the Astros even going after someone? Why Randy Wolf?! I have to move on before this gives me a logic tumor.

Scott Kazmir – 7 IP, 0 ER, 9 Ks. I hope he keeps it up; I just don’t think he will.

Rich Harden – 7 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 10 Ks. Kazmir vs. Harden in The Series…. of Injuries.

Kip Wells – In our Razzball league, where I’m currently in last 1st (I think. There’s an at-bat minimum that Yahoo doesn’t factor in, so the standings aren’t always accurate.), I forgot to move Kip Wells into my lineup.  Sonavabench! He only pitched a third of an inning and he gave up 7 ER. 189.00 ERA, 24.00 WHIP. This is the equivalent of having a 24 inning perfect game on your bench. Or a Marcus Thames 17 home run game on your bench. I so wanna bang my head into a moving car.

Miguel Cabrera – 5-for-6. Now at .290, he will end the season at .320. You do the math!

Matt Joyce – When I saw the Tigers scored 19, I knew the man with the smarty-pants sounding name had to get at least 3 RBIs. He got 5 and went 4-for-6. Matt Joyce was just named the Player of the Week and is on the business end side of the platoon when Mags pushes him.

Jon Lester – Held the Mariners scoreless through 7 1/3 innings as Lester drove them McNulty.

Troy Tulowitzki – 4-for-4. Now he just needs to go 146 for his next 146 and he’ll salvage his season.

Robinson Cano – Why don’t the Yankees send him to Winter Ball so he thinks April is the middle of the season?

So Kershaw over Maddux (at home) & Slowey?

And when is Gio Gonzalez being called up? I’m waiting!

  2. Denys says:

It was also worth mentioning (reminding?) that LaRoche is on his post-ASB tear yet again.

  3. Frank Rizzo says:

So is Weeks going to begin platooning with Durham or was this just to get a veteran into the dugout and give Weeks a wake up call?

  5. Zebo says:

@Grey: drop Laroche and pick up Matt Joyce? I need an OF eligible schmohawk to give Ellsbury a spell. Ellsbury is pulling Rickie Weeks on me right now.

  6. IowaCubs

    IowaCubs says:
    (link)

@Zebo: I have the same question regarding Joyce and Ellsbury.

@Grey/crew: Would you drop Guthrie, Corpas or Taylor Buchholz for either Ayala or Sanchez? I need the saves.

  7. Baron Von Vulturewins says:
    (link)

@Denys: Laroche’s scorching pre-ASB/post-ASB splits get a little overstated. Yes, the avg is much better, but last year after the ASB he hit 8 HRs with 37 RBIs. That’s like two good weeks for Ryan Howard. 1B and Util are deep enough that Laroche is a marginal add at best.

@Zebo: Joyce is choyce. Remember he’s in a platoon (only hits against righties) but he’s been tremendous. And to think when I picked him up in the RCL, I was openly mocked! Who’s laughing now?*

@IowaCubs: Guthrie, yes. The other two, hold.

It’s dangerous to make moves based on trades in the future that may or may not happen. I’d say dropping Guthrie for Sanchez is the play here — only b/c Wagner is old and could be out all year if this injury is catastrophic, and Sanchez can actually help in the short-term as a MR, unlike Ayala. (Yes, I just picked up Ayala in the RCL, but that’s b/c w/out Saito I’m d to the e to the sperate for saves.

I think the Rauch rumors are iffy because he’s a) young, b) good, and c) under a cheap contract for a few more years. Why would the Nats trade that for more young players? What are they, the A’s?

    *I am.

  8. Grey

    Grey says:

@Denys: Anyone pitching in Petco is my choice. Slowey hasn’t pitched well to anyone in the AL in about a month. I don’t want him.

    LaRoche is tearing.

@Frank Rizzo: As Rudy and I said yesterday, he might just be a prod.

@johnson: You can’t sell Hamels if you only have Wainwright and Harang. They might come back and be useful but Wainwright’s injury is a real concern, and Harang hasn’t shown many signs.

    @Zebo: I wouldn’t drop LaRoche for Joyce.

@IowaCubs: I’d wait until Wednesday’s start to see what Guthrie does, or I’d chuck Buchholz. Dealer’s choice!

  9. IowaCubs

    IowaCubs says:
    (link)

    @Grey: @Baron Von Vulturewins:
I took both of these fine recommendations under advisement and went with the Buchholz drop for Sanchez since I already have Corpas and my hard 8 money on the Craps table is on a bad elbow. It’s hard out here for a MR. B pimp.

    ***UPDATE***
from the NY Times Mets blog:
“Mets’ closer Billy Wagner had an magnetic resonance imaging scan on his left shoulder at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan on Tuesday. The scan indicated no structural damage to his left shoulder and probably just a muscle spasm. Wagner is day-to-day, meaning no stop on the disabled list, and he is not being ruled out for a role tonight against the Phillies at Shea. Wagner will throw before the game, as usual, and will give Manager Jerry Manuel a thumbs up or thumbs down before the game as to whether or not he can go if needed.”

@Baron Von Vulturewins: Being in a 16 team league, LaRoche gets a more than moderate boost at UTIL. Granted I have Davis (and will continue to ride him) but LaRoche is worth plugging in when Davis/Teixeira have days off.

@Grey: I think I might swoop in for Kershaw then.

  12. Any chance the trade rumors involving Beltran and Holliday are true? I doubt it but just wanted to hear what you thought. Imagine Beltran in Colorado…I just got a little chubby thinking about his increase in production (maybe)

Traded Maine/Wagner for Markakis last Friday–dare I say, Genius.

Anyway, I now have Markakis, Ankiel, Hart and McLouth. Is there anyone you would bench outright or continue to look at day to day matchups?

  14. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@jph: I’d try and trade Ankiel while he’s hot. Not that I think he’s going to end in the dumpster, but there’s no reason to carry an extra OF. Maybe move Ankiel for Fuentes while his owner worries that he might lose him.

  15. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@RotoDish: In the last three years Beltran has batted .189 with one HR in Coors, and that was against Rockies pitching. I’d love to see Holliday in Shea though, with that lineup around him.

@Grey: No idea. That was window dressing for me. I will drop him the moment the deal goes through. My OF is now Vlady/Victorino/Hamilton/McLouth. If I was a betting man, he “threw in” Punto when he made the offer hoping that would help me part with Tulo — i.e. I’ll give him a fill in SS. It’s a 19 team league with 4 DL spots, so not much on the WW anyway.

  36. Grey

@peter: Hmm… Hanrahan is very wild. I still like Ayala. I suppose I could be wrong, but I did call this trade last night.

  37. peter says:
    (link)

btw, saw the Rauch news on Rotowire. They’ve already updated their Nationals depth charts thinking purporting that HANRAHAN was closer-to-be. A little bit of a leap-frog, since Ayala has been doing the 8th inning, but I could see it.

  38. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@peter: Hanrahan’s a mess, but I suppose he could get the few saves that are there. The good thing is I think Rauch closing in Lyons place. Haren and Webb probably pushed for this.

  47. Steve says:

@Grey: Dumped George for Hanrahan. Being relievers-only, I’m always looking for Saves and Holds. Couldn’t trade George’s sorry ass and it looks like his value for the rest of the year is negligible anyway (I have Doumit).

Ayala, Hanrahan, Sanchez and Heilman all available in my league.

I’m thinking Ayala is the add, who would you drop Grey?

Davis, Guthrie, Gio Gonzalez? I’m thinking Gio or Davis as i wanna give Guthrie a couple more starts before presuming a second-half collapse is underway, i’m leaning towards Gio even though Davis is sitting on my bench with no real route into my starting lineup…

  51. Grey

    Grey says:

Grey, i just dropped Ayala for Hanrahan after reading the Nats website topic on this deal, the new closer was mentioned twice, one guy said Hanrahan closes for the rest of the year, and the other said probably Hanrahan, or maybe Saul Rivera as a second possibility.

    No mention of Ayala.

  53. BigFatHippo says:

Guy in my league trying to get Broxton from me. This is the same guy who has Miggy and he won’t budge on Miggy. I told him he’s not as dumb as he looks.

He offered Weeks and Lyon for Broxton, don’t want Weeks and Lyon is done. The only guy on his team that can help me is Holliday.

I’m thinkin Maggs, Torii Hunter and Broxton for Holliday. He’s weak in the OF, Swisher, Nady and Pence.

This would give me an outfield of Sizemore, Holliday, Dye and Ludwick.

Is this enough to get Holliday or do some other combination?

Is this enough to get Hollliday

  54. Cory says:

  59. BKK says:
    (link)

@Denys: That’s my feeling too, but man he has been scuffling…as they say.

@BigFatHippo: Seems like alot to give up to me, but I guess it depends the depth of the league. But then again I don’t think either of those guys plus Broxton gets him though. It does give you a pretty nice outfield.

  60. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@Joe: This is what I’m seeing from Rotoworld, “With Jon Rauch gone to Arizona, the Nationals could go to a closer-by-committee involving Joel Hanrahan, Luis Ayala and Saul Rivera.”

This ESPN, “….Joel Hanrahan and his 97-mph fastball might be the favorite to replace Rauch for saves in the nation’s capital, though as of this writing, manager Manny Acta had not committed to anything. Saul Rivera and Luis Ayala may also be in the mix. Hanrahan’s usage has been more in the middle innings and in two-inning stints as of late, but he has prototypical closer stuff when he’s throwing strikes.”

Let’s not forget Rauch only got 17 saves in almost 2/3 of the season’s games. This may be Hanrahan gets 7 saves and Ayala gets 5 and Saul Rivera gets 2 or mix those numbers up.

Ayala was setting up Rauch, usually that guy slides in. It’s really on Acta at this point.

@BigFatHippo: That should be enough, but it depends on how much he values him.

  61. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    @BKK

It’s pretty shallow, 10 team roto and 2 guys have given up so no trades there. Only seems to be about 3 of us willing to trade, I’m in 1st so that puts me in the drivers seat.

The thing I’m trying to do is strengthen his OF while getting Holliday.

    Maggs less than Holliday but

Hunter greater than Swisher, Nady, Pence.

    Plus, he needs a closer.

  62. BKK says:

Has everyone given up on Frenchy? He is sitting on WW. How would you rate him against Juan Rivera?

  63. BKK says:

  68. BKK says:

  69. BigFatHippo says:

    @BKK, Grey

I proposed it but Grey’s probably right, he’ll value him too high. Upton and Holliday are his only source of steals and he’s in 3rd place.

    I’ve got one other option.

Maggs, Hunter for Beltran. The guy with Beltran is out of the running but I’ve traded with him before.

I’m weak in steals (Sizemore, Kaz, not much else).

    Would you do that?

@knighttown: Ryan, Hanrahan and Morrow. In that order.

  72. BigFatHippo says:

    @Grey

Meaning, would you do it if you were me or him?

  73. BKK says:

@BigFatHippo: If your shopping for steals. Is Pierre on the wire in your league? He is reportedly coming back next week.

Rototimes: “Juan Pierre, LF, Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday 7/22, 12:43 PM CT
Juan Pierre is close to returning to the Dodgers as he is expected to be sent on a rehab assignment this week, according to the LA Times. He could be with triple-A Las Vegas before the Dodgers start their next homestand Friday.

Our View: His rehab assignment is expected to last no longer than three games, putting him on track to return to the Dodgers at some point in early August.”

    Yahoo says next week.

  74. BKK says:
    (link)

@Grey: Re:Knighttown; really you put Morrow ahead of Putz? Understand JJ may end up on DL again, but while he’s back I don’t think Morrow gets that many ops, he’ll be working the 8th?

  75. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@BigFatHippo: Weeks and Lyon for Broxton for Holliday?

Broxton, I like but he’s had a lot of bumps this year. Hunter, I like but he is what he is, which is a 1/2 the player of Holliday. And Mags is 1/2. I want Holliday. So if you can stand the hit losing those guys, you gotta grab Holliday. What I was saying is sometimes people don’t want to part with their prized possessions (Holliday), no matter how fair.

I would not do the Mags/Hunter for Beltran. Beltran will get you what? 10 steals? That’s going to help you? If so, trade Marte (or some other third tier schmohawk closer) for Bourn or just pickup Bourn off waivers and sub him in on Mondays and Thursdays when someone has the day off. Or get rid of the MI that you don’t like and grab Velez and watch him run wild.

  76. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@BigFatHippo: Or Pierre as BKK pointed out.

@BKK: @knighttown: I took Knightown’s question as who does he put in his lineup (because he asked who to start). As of right now, I want Morrow in my lineup. He said he wasn’t dropping any.

Putz isn’t closing for a little while.

    EDIT: To add a Q.

  77. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    That’s a thought.

Believe it or not he’s available but don’t know where I’d put him.

I’ll post my team in the forums tomorrow and where I stand on pts.

Currently in 1st but only by 5, getting tight after leading all year by 10 to 20.

  78. Denys says:
    (link)

@BigFatHippo: I think that’s good too. If it doesn’t work try pushing Ludwick or Dye packaged with Broxton for Holliday – at least you can get an upgrade. For example at the beginning of the season I sent Hafner and Lyon for Teixeira – I couldn’t be happier now.

The simple rule of trading: average player + closer = solid player

@BKK: I’m not giving up on Frenchy just yet. Unless he’s hiding some injury this is all just mental crap and he’ll be back to his old .280 25+ HR power self – which is essentially what Rivera give you anyway.

@BigFatHippo: Negative on the Beltran trade.

@Denys: I think I’ll keep Rivera. Stats being equal, at least he can play two fields, where French is only RF.

@Denys: Guy in my league picked him up July 12. On the 10th I picked Kuo and dropped Howell. He told me today before the trade that he picked him up expecting the Rauch would be moved. Then later that day…, I hate it when someone scoops a gem like that, he’s exactly what I was looking for… an RP,SP that gets saves. <:-(

@BKK: suit yourself. i’m just saying the ceiling is higher for the other (and i didn’t even know people still played that RF/CF/LF stuff lol).

@BKK: I’ve had Kuo all year he’s been amazing. To be honest after Hanrahan strings together 3-5 saves I’m going to trade him – already having Papelbon/Ryan/Kobayashi. My league also scores holds maybe I can push him for Marmol.

@Denys: I read that you thought the ceiling was the same.

@Denys: We have a very non-conventional format. We have 2 of every position and 4 Util. A bunch of guys in the office that I play fantasy hockey with, this is how the commish set it up. He was supposedly the baseball mind and the guys elected him to set-up the league. That’s how we play fantasy hockey, but we track 14 stats for batters… its a points league. Its crazy. I’m currently in first with 8200 pts. 660 ahead of 2nd, 3rd and 4th…like 1400 over last. I hope to join a better league next season.

@Grey: drop Guthrie for Bill Hall to cover for Ellsbury and Hunter’s razzballness?

@RT: F—, I heard that. Davis was my team’s 4th donk tonight, but he was on the bench. !@#$!!

Thank G-d for Rios, Doumit and the MUCH MALIGNED SWISH. SWISH = DONK. Again.

@Baron Von Vulturewins: Good call on the Rauch thing. No way he gets traded. I am writing this from a time machine, by the way, set to 3 PM this afternoon. My genius is intact.

Do you start Greinke tomorrow against Detroit ? He got killed last game against the White Sox, although the Tigers are definetly not the White Sox these days…

By the way I also have Sabathia going tomorrow, would hate to kill his good game against the Cardinals with another 7ER outing with Greinke…but he could be good!?

    @cruisinkc: B.

@ Everyone: I’ve learned to keep Davis in my UTIL since last week. Impressive thing is that tonight’s effort was AWAY from Hitters’ Paradise.

    @cruisinkc: B

@Zebo: I’d wait for Guthrie’s start tomorrow night, unless you really don’t need a starter.

@Nick: I’m not starting him in one of my leagues (ten team). In a 12 team H2H league, I am starting him.

    @Tony B.: I’d go Lind.

Alright Greinke is def bench…now what do u think of acquiring Harden & Reyes for Rollins & Dye…I have the extra OF’s if I can get this done I can drop Marcum (horrible start tonight) and pickup another Closer because I got Rauch but still want to keep him for Whip/Era
