BABIPs Don’t Lie
BABIP is Batting Average for Balls In Play. And they do lie, sometimes. But who can resist a title alluding to a Shakira song? Not me! BABIP is a quick way to know how much luck a hitter is having. There’s more to it, but for the purposes of this, above .300 BABIP for a hitter and it means the hitter could hit a bloop single just over the pitcher’s head with a drawn in infield. Below .200 and the hitter could hit a line drive into the Grand Canyon and it would get caught by Alice on the back of a mule. Then there’s HR/FB%, which is a quick way to know if a hitter is hitting more home runs than what makes sense for that player’s amount of fly balls. Then there’s LD%, which is the percentage of hits that are line drives. Line drives are usually a sign of solid contact aka a player is hitting the ball hard. Finally, K% or the percentage a hitter Ks. So why all the fancy acronyms? Well, the other day a FOR (Friend of Razzball), jsp2014 threw this nugget into the comments:
“I was curious about who’s been lucky and unlucky so far for some buy low/sell high ideas, so I did a little research on Fangraphs. I figured this could be useful to others as well:
Min. 50 PAs
Lowest BABIP (look for the AVG to go up): Zaun, Byrnes, Berkman (.171), Rollins (.172), Encarnacion (.175), McCann (.176), Tulo (.176), Alex Gonzalez, Hardy (.178), Quentin (.184), Phillips (.184)
Highest BABIP (due to come back down to earth): F.Lewis (.543), Youk (.490), Flores, Votto (.469), Beltran (.464), B.anderson, Markakis (.441), Asdrubal, Abreu (.426), F.Sanchez, B.Roberts (.415)
Highest HR/FB (expect the HR pace to slow for most of these): Young (42%), Adrian Gonzalez (35%; career 16.5%), Quentin (32%; 21% last year), C.Davis (31%; 21% last year), Thome (31%; career 28%), Inge (30%; career 10%), Reynolds (29%; career 18%), Dye, Pena, Jeter, Overbay, Branyan, Fukudome, Uggla, Tulo
Highest LD% (unsustainable but means they’ve made a lot of solid contact): N.Johnson, Salty, Feliz, Fields, Rolen, Blum, Teahen, Fukudome, Bartlett, Asdrubal, Castillo, Dukes, Youk, Bourn, Andy LaRoche
Highest K-Rate: C.Davis (49%!), Maybin (42), Thome (38), Dickerson (38), Upton (38), Schafer (37), Salty (37), Flores (37), F.Lewis (36), Reynolds (36), Fielder (35), Fields (34), Upton (33)”
That’s a great comment right there, and I appreciate it. Now what can we gleam from this?
Fred Lewis – With his power and speed Crapolanco-like, his average is due to regress. Might want to get out while the gettin’ is good.
Lance Berkman – He’s been the anti-Fred Lewis. All power, no average. That will get better.
Kevin Youkilis – While he will continue to be solid, he won’t be this solid.
Adrian Gonzalez – He always seems to start the year on fire and cool off as the summer heats up (Maybe he needs a trade to San Francisco? It’s cold there in the summer.). This year probably won’t be any different.
Brandon Inge – Because he’s eligible at catcher, he’s not a straight sell candidate but the homers will eventually dry up.
Troy Tulowitzki – As a career .312 BABIP hitter, he’s due to explode at some point soon. Buy into the correction.
Cameron Maybin – His K% shows he’s struggling. Yeah, no kidding.
Jimmy Rollins – Maybe luck has knocked the wheels off of J-Roll in the early going.
Geovany Soto – Just missed the cutoff of 50 ABs, but he has a .161 BABIP. Shoulder might not be the only thing holding him back.
Jesus Flores – Don’t believe his early season flash, the pan’s coming soon.

Grey, what’s your take on El Caballo at this point in time?
[Reply]
@mannybeingmanny: His power’s there. But average-wise, another victim of bad luck. At some point, he’s going to have a .350 average month.

Did you come across any information on where Aaron Hill is headed?
And over/under 40 for Cansecito? (Carols Quentin)

@NoonTime: Scutaro?
@cws05nuts: He’s headed for 22 HRs +/- 3.

And outside of the Coors/Oak-land analysis for Holliday… is he getting unlucky or just bad?

@Grey: 22 for Hill right? Carlos +10 from 22 at least! I’m a hack, apologies.

Scutaro just hit a homer, buy him? Also, what’s the price tag on Tulo now? Freddy Sanchez + a good pitcher?
[Reply]
April 30th, 2009 at 11:57 am
@Grey: Yah.. his leadoff HR today had me reminiscing about his A’s days… great stadium chant when 1/2 goes MARCO! and the other 1/2 responds SCUTARO! Lil’Papi was a fan favorite.
[Reply]
@cws05nuts: Bit unlucky on average, but he’s hitting fly balls. They’re just not going out.
@Zebo: Sanchez and a pitcher should be plenty.

I looked at Symborski’s updated ZIPS.
I’m thinking of a crazy ass trade offer.
Moving Kinsler and a closer (let’s say F. Cordero) for Blowjob Upton and Alexei Ramirez.
Is that nuts? My team is really sucking badly outside of Kinsler and I know Kinsler is due for some regression.
[Reply]
@Joel: I think it’s a fair trade for you. Don’t mind it.

What’s up with K Jo (k. johnson)? I know its early but an awesome 4/1/3/.130 for the last 15 is hard to stomach in a 10-team league with a lot of talent available, not to mention him sucking his thumb for two straight games.
I know you like Felipe more, what about Weeks?

April 30th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
Jobacum for Tulo? The other guy has Weeks and Aviles for 2B and SS so I doubt he wants Freddy Sanchez.

@Joel: Davis is not costing me much because I got him so late in my 10 team (11th round). None of my leaguemates believed in him and they look smarter every day I roster this guy. But what really sucks is I laid off of Votto because of this guy and Votto went in the 12th round. That guy who’s got Votto is a genius, I’m a complete idiot.

I’m trying to push Davis for McCann in a ten team mixed league. The other owner has V. Martinez as his starter. I would sleep a lot better at night knowing that my fifth round pick turned into a productive McCann as opposed to a potential bust in Davis.

I’ve got Gonzo at 1B and Votto at utility (no MI or CI). Should I trade one to a team desperate for a 1B? Is asking for Soriano straight up for Gonzo too much? I could add a guy like Pence or Wainwright to sweeten the deal. Or should I just sit tight? – I am in 1st place afterall

In a h2h daily pts keeper league what do you think about:
my buddy is desperate for CC I’m not panicking I’ve kept CC for a couple years now I know what the deal is I just want Reyes… What do you think:
I would ship CC, Carl Crawford, and Michael Young
for Reyes, Zimm (3b), and Lackey.
Go or no?
[Reply]
@whigs: Go with Weeks in a 10 team league over KJ.
@Zebo: Jobacum’s fair.
@cubbies299: Prefer Pujols, would take either.
@NoonTime: It’s not close. The Rollins side by a lot.
@Pops: That trade’s fair. McCann’s playing in the minors right now. He should be okay.
@Ian: Gonzo for Soriano is fair.
@Tom: I think he’s headed for about what I gave him in my preseason predictions. 22/7/.290 thereabouts.
@cws05nuts: Looks fair. Go.

salty is having eye problems,2nd game this year he missed, meet me at the tea-garden anyone, keep an eye(pun intended)on him
[Reply]
@cubbies299: I’d want Burrell, if that’s what you need (30 HRs, .260 average).
@AL KOHOLIC: Ooh… That’s tasty. I have Teagarden in an AL-Only. Wish he’d do something.
[Reply]
April 30th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
@Grey: Well I don’t need much really, but I don’t see Lewis as worth much and our league is always pretty active. I figure I’ll have an easier time packaging Burrel than I iwould Parra, who’s a real project. My rotation is pretty ghastly in ratios, (Verlander/Kaz/Lowe/Vazq/Weaver/Parra), but if anything, Parra hurts my ratios. U still do it?
[Reply]
@cubbies299: Gotcha… Yeah, go for it.

[Reply]
April 30th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Do you guys believe in “The Jetstream”? I’m thinking about packaging Adrian with a closer to go after Teixeira. The guy with Tex only has Fuentes and BJ Ryan.
[Reply]
@JR: If you can flip Parra for a sure thing (Burrell) and you need that, then I’m all for it. Parra’s never going to be great on ratios and that doode already had some pitchers who were an issue on ratios.

@Griff: I’d prefer Tex there.

Here’s the options:
Kershaw vs. Nationals (Zimmermann)
Meche @ Angels (Saunders)
Slowey @ Orioles (Hendrickson)
Chris Young vs. Diamondbacks (Haren)
Paulino @ Nationals (Cabrera) & vs. Padres (Geer) (2 start)
Davies vs. White Sox (Buehrle) & @ Angels (Ortega)
The other guys already in the lineup are:
Liriano @ DET & vs. SEA
Scherzer @ LAD & vs. WAS
Billingsley vs SF
Harden @ HOU
Shields @ BOS
If you think I should move any of them out also, let me know. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Is Nolasco/Cano/C.Davis too much for Utley? I am set in pitching and lead league by 10 HR’s without Davis production. What I am looking for is better OBP and roster spots to pick up cheap saves.

I just flipped Krispy and Hoffman for Salty and Reynolds.
I think I overpaid slightly, but my OF in good shape (Quentin, Markakis, Ethier, Dukes, Fowler) and the wire has a few intriguing options.
My infield is a different story. Aside from Aaron Hill, everyone is sub .210 and its killing my April.
Now if only I could find some sucker to take Derek Lee off my hands.

What is wrong with F Lewis? (Well, besides not being very good)
He stole 4 bases early on in the spring, which is the big reason I took him, thinking he will run a lot. He stopped running as the spring progressed and now during the season he has 1 sb. Maybe his legs are hurting.
And he has 20 hits on the season… and 1 lousy RBI! How is that even possible? He hit in the middle of the lineup for a while.

Two questions:
1) Too early to trade Brandon Phillips for whatever value may be left? Dooode is killing me.
2) Is Quentin too big of a monster to try to sell high for higher pick off to a slow start (I’m looking at you, Teixeira!)?

@Paulie Allnuts: Seems far to me but I got Beckett on my team now and he is doing work against Tampa so far…hopefully I didn’t jinx him!

@sean: Too early. I’d hold Quentin.

@Paulie Allnuts: The only bad thing about Ludwick is he is the only RH hitter in that Cardinal outfield. Tony will sit him when he feels it’s a bad matchup against a righty he hasn’t had success against, but for the most part he will play.
Been sitting the last two games with the flu bug, Lohse had it, Albert had it, it’s getting around like a pig in the Cards dugout.

Just asking because I’m getting killed in batting average and Matsui hits for a decent average. Team is still batting .250 with a team of all-stars. No thanks to Teixeira, Phillips, Iannetta, C. Lee, and some bums that aren’t on the team anymore.

@Grey: Why not, show me yours I’ll show you mine. Gonna be pissed if this backfires, don’t cross me Grey!
I accidentally added him, funny story, never played ESPN and I had an open bench spot. Clicked add on Parra just so I could compare him to others on my team, bingo he’s added automatically, not even a “confirm”. This is not your Fathers Yahoo…….there goes my 2 pending waiver transactions, ouch, live and learn.
[Reply]
@BKK: Yeah… I caused a little brouhaha on the messageboard, but I don’t believe in protests so pointing out a bad trade is my only course of action.
@EricB: Gotcha.
@BigFatHippo: What do you think after a month of ESPN? I like so much better than Yahoo. Love that I don’t need to refresh a page for the stats change.
[Reply]
@Grey: Oh and the real time standings page; don’t forget that!

@Grey: First time I play on ESPN too. Agreed on the live scoring/standings. But why no watch list?
[Reply]
April 30th, 2009 at 6:22 pm
@Grey: Wow, what “expert” would do that deal. It’s the kind of lopsided deal I might expect in my office league where I have on occasion fleeced one of my co-workers with a chump-dump of hot-starters for struggling regulars. I would have made some noise too.
You’ll beat ‘em anyway.
[Reply]
April 30th, 2009 at 6:24 pm
@Grey: Standings is the only thing I like about it, but I can do the same on Stattracker.
Guess I’m just so used to Y that I haven’t figured it out yet but it’s kinda hard to do research on. And the automatically adding the player thing without asking you to confirm, yeah, that pisses me off.
[Reply]
April 30th, 2009 at 6:28 pm
@BigFatHippo: Yeah the “automatic” add happened to me too… I miss the Watch List, Players rankings from Yahoo… I don’t like the Players research too… I always forget to select the “pitchers” option when I search for a specific pitcher.
[Reply]
@Vince: Not sure, don’t use the watch list on Yahoo. I watch everyone… muahahahahaha
@BKK: It was in the Yahoo Expert league that Behrens put together.
@BigFatHippo: Yeah, I guess Stattracker does that too, but I didn’t buy it this year.
Also, there’s something to ESPN outsiders able to view the league pages that Yahoo doesn’t do.
EDIT: Word.

@BKK, @AL KOHOLIC – We need to come up with a Razzball term for this this type of behavior – a fellow league member sees a question that you have posted answered by Grey, and then steals the recommended player before you get an opportunity to pick him up on waivers. This is outrageous, cunning, insidious, back-stabbing… (not that I wouldn’t engage in this action if the need arose…)

@BKK: “You tried to prohibit it” meaning the league agreed to refrain, yes. Generally when it was noticed people were chastised and I hardly blame Grey for not comparing each question to a list of the RCL teams. The basic point was the agreement to try to compete against each other, not who had the direct line to razzball central.
Take that as you may and carry on, its all for pride anyways. Unless you really, really, really want Tacobell coupons.

Grey didn’t have an opinion on the matter and c’est la vie.
Even now the original Recipe does a pretty good job of staying away from RCL specific trade and pickup questions. Granted everyone, except me, is pretty good.
I think it makes it more interesting, and harder, not to float RCL related questions on Razzball. It also takes vulturing beyond saves.

Grey – can you give me a quick thumbs up / thumbs down:
12 man HTH auction league
My offense is a little weak, my pitching is stoked for now (Harden, Gallardo, Jered Weaver, Phil Hughes, Rickey Romaro) especially with closers (H Bell, B Morrow, M Gonzalez, T Hoffman, B Fuentes).
I have the opportunity to make this trade:
From me: H Bell, J Weaver, J Lugo, R Doumit
Fom him: J Rollins, J Arendondo, C Ray (or Putz), R Barajas
The extra guys are to make the dollars work. I’m giving him salary cap room and I’m going to basically max out my salary.
Right now I have Theriot and Alexei Ramirez in the minors (free keeper next year if he stays down) and we play with 2 utility spots. My current util guys are Rios, Ankiel and Bourn – so Rollins will obviously play.
The guy is also in my division (he’s 3-0-0, I’m 1-0-2), he has a much better offense, but is short on starters and has no closers.
Advice would be appreciated.

“The job as Rockies closer has been a revolving door, and right now it appears that Huston Street is on his way in and Manuel Corpas is on his way out.
…’It was a significant opportunity to do something good for the ballclub, and (Street) was able to do it,” Hurdle said. “It was in pretty effective fashion, three punch-outs, no ball in play. But I’ll probably talk to the team first.’”
