Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

In the first real game of the season (it was real, right?  I looked for highlights, but ESPN was showing a Red Sox split-squad game instead).  From the box score, I heart Brandon McCarthy.  His line was 7 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners and 3 Ks.  Yeah, the Mariners aren’t very good at hitting, but a quality start is a quality start.  Brandon McCarthy celebrated by taking out a Tokyo girl with red streaks in her hair who lives on the other side of the tracks.  Sorry Peking Ducky!  I tried to get Rudy to draft McCarthy in one of our leagues on Tuesday night, and was disappointed to see he went to someone else for $9.  I have his projections down as 8-11/3.50/1.17/140.  Last year, his home ERA and WHIP was 2.65 and 1.11.  He may not strike out many hitters, but there’s not many pitchers late I’d trust to actually help my WHIP.  Anyway, here’s what else we saw in spring training (and real baseball) for 2012 fantasy baseball:

Justin Smoak – 0-for-5.  That two day pick up has worked out well so far!  While he’s at it, maybe he can hit a line drive into Florida and injure Anibal Sanchez.

Ichiro Suzuki – 5 ABs, 4 singles, 2 balls out of the infield.  That’s a .800 AVG in baseball and .400 AVG in sumo.

Dustin Ackley – Home run and steal for the first official slam & legs of the season.  Back in November, I went over my Dustin Ackley fantasy.  I wrote it while beating Steve Wiebe at Donkey Kong.

Felix Hernandez – 8 IP, 1 ER, 5 baserunners, 6 Ks.  With the week layoff between the second and third Mariners game, is he gonna start twice in the first four games of the Mariners season?  Cause that would be kinda awesome…If I owned him anywhere…which I don’t…  Sticking with the dot, dot, dot theme:

Michael Morse – His collagen injection paid wonders and was able to secure a sugar daddy may make it back for Opening Day.  If not, he shouldn’t miss much time.

Drew Storen – Expected to start the year on the DL.  Of course he is.  He’s only thrown 2 innings this spring.  As I mentioned in our fantasy baseball podcast, Henry Rodriguez is looking to me like one of those middle relievers that comes out of nowhere and Ks a shizzton and ends up being more valuable than your number three fantasy starter that you were crazy about in March and wanted to kill in May.  Think Venters instead of Liriano last year.  Actually, think of Venters instead of Liriano last year as long as you don’t have any sharp objects around.  No, a comparison to Venters isn’t completely apt.  Rodriguez’s WHIP might be more in line with a Marmol.  But he gets Ks, should get innings and may get saves.  Who’s standing in his way?  Lidge?  Oy.  If I wanted straight saves, I’d go Lidge first.  He will probably be the first guy to see ninth inning looks.  It doesn’t mean he will be the last guy to see saves in Storen’s stead.

Justin Morneau – The 2nd best Canadian 1st baseman is starting to heat up as spring training comes to a close.  He’s hit 3 HRs in the past couple days.  Hopefully, he doesn’t rub it in to Brian Roberts at the next Concussion Anonymous meeting.

Brian Wilson – His beard must be itchy because the Giants scratched him from Wednesday’s game.  If you drafted him, hope you enjoy wild rides.  Follow his gimp’s lead and handcuff him with Sergio Romo and/or Santiago Casilla.  (For saves, I’d go Casilla first.)

B.J. Upton – Headed to the DL to start the year as B.J.’s back is still Upton-o-good after colliding with Desmond Jennings in the OF.  They are just too fast.  The Rays have to regulate them like NASCAR to avoid this stuff in the future.  Steals ain’t got no face, but they require a functioning back.  Upton said he could miss only a few games (three), and doesn’t expect to miss more than a few weeks.  Gulp.  Hopefully it’s the former if former means the first one.  Brandon Guyer should get some playing time in the mean’s while.  Take note those of you in 30-team MLB leagues.

Jed Lowrie – Jammed his thumb.  Thumb up the jam, thumb it up!  Sorry, that always gets me.  Lowrie said he should be back in a few days.  Sounds like a stereotypical Sparky Anklebiter injury.  So a player with too much can’t-put-your-finger-on-it-ness needs to put his finger on ice.

J.J. Hardy – Received a cortisone shot in his shoulder yesterday, which is a steroid (tomato-potato, I guess).  I didn’t like Hardy going into the spring, but the one thing he offered was power.  How you think the power’s gonna be with a sore shoulder?  Yup.

Chris Carpenter – Having a bone spur removed, will be sidelined a couple of months.  No, this is not the Cardinals’ Chris Carpenter, it’s the Red Sox’s Chris Carpenter.  What a jinxed name.  This is a warning to anyone underage getting a fake ID.  Don’t go with Leo Nunez or Fausto Carmona.  The authorities will be all over you.

    First!

I’m holding grey and rudy personally responsible if I wake up tomorrow to another 0fer from Jesus Montero. I woke this morning like a kid on christmas and dashed over to my laptop to see what contribution Montero had made to my team on the first day of the season…only to find a lump of coal.

First of all: SONAVABENCH! I sat McCarthy thinking he’s the kind of pitcher to only start at home. Forgot who he was facing.

Secondly, we demand the lyrics to the Razzball Podcast! I might be able to come up with a melancholy acoustic version…

Finally, is it ethical to ask questions about my RCL team here? Cause if it is, I wouldn’t mind people’s opinion on my team (more specifically, people who aren’t in my league!).

Looks like Ligers do exist because the Chiz in the Hall has been demoted to AAA!!! But, enough razzing….the Chiz has been dropped in my league and I’m wondering if he might be a better pickup as a backup 3B for Wright than say, Brett Morel?? When do you expect Chiz to be back up??

I was actually desperate enough for some fantasy action that I snagged Cliff Pennington to start him against King Felix yesterday. A 2/5 night/morning with a run and a steal later and I have a sudden urge to hit the casino and bet the farm on 00′s. But, really, why would a casino want my farm? …No real point to this post, I just missed real baseball.

    C R. Martin
    1B J. Votto
    2B I. Kinsler
    3B E. Longoria
    SS M. Scutaro
    MI D. Espinosa
    CI C. Pena
    OF H. Pence, M. Bourn, S. Soo Choo, N. Swisher, D. Fowler
    UTIL B. Butler
    SP M. Cain, D. Hudson, M. Latos, A. Sanchez, T. Cahill
    RP R. Betancourt, B. League, F. Francisco, G. Holland
    BENCH T. Clippard, V. Pestano, B. Matusz

    • Tony says:
      (link)

@MattTruss223, haha we’re you as happy after his 1-3 with 2 K’s on day 1? I’d temper my expectations of the guy. It’s good to see him hit a HR early, but he might not hit another for a month, ya just dont know about him….

      • Charles says:
        (link)

@Tony, Don’t forget that “1″ was a double off King Felix. It’s fun to get excited.

      • JC in the TCs says:
        (link)

@Tony, Nothing wrong with a 1-3 off King Felix. His double over the CF’s head was nice. So far, so good.

      • MattTruss223 says:
        (link)

@Tony, oh, you mean against a top 5-10 MLB starter in King Felix? Yea…I was ok with a nice double and some expected Ks. Plus, the guy just looks the part of a power hitter. It was my first time seeing him play is all, I’m giddy, don’t rain on my Cespedes parade!

    • Wilsonian says:
      (link)

@MattTruss223, my only issue, besides the obvious Ks – but I could care less about those, is that he was playing in a little league field compared to the vast emptiness that is O.Co. I think he could be a monster, but he could also tail off once pitchers get into mid-season form and figure out how to pitch to him.

      • MattTruss223 says:
        (link)

@Wilsonian, I hear ya. He still plays some games away though. And yes, there’ll be an adjustment period, as with every hitter. No one seems to mention that when they talk about Lawrie and his 150 career ABs so far though…weird.

        • Wilsonian says:
          (link)

@MattTruss223, true, but 81 in O.Co. is rough. They have to be no-doubters to get outta that joint. Nothing cheap there. I do like that he has a few games in Texas, though. I think what’s different about Lawrie is that he performed exactly how everyone expected when he got the call last year, and his MLB stats were fully in line with his Minor League stats. It’s also different when someone comes up in the minors and people can gauge how you may or may not perform against MLB pitching. When it comes to Cuban players, or Japanese for that matter, it’s tougher to tell. Their numbers are usually highly inflated compared to what their MLB numbers will be.

Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t be surprised if My Name is Yoenis hits 30 hrs this season. And I also wouldn’t be surprised if Lawrie struggled to get 12-15.

          • MattTruss223 says:
            (link)

@Wilsonian, which is why there’s a discount on Yoenis. Lawrie went 28th in my RCL, Yoenis 150th.

        • Tony says:
          (link)

@MattTruss223, haha can of worms, opened, didnt know such a convo would start…. I’d like to see him suceed, i dont own him anywhere, he’ll be a great value seeing most people got him relatively late, but I’d temper whatever expectations you have… I dont get too excited until a guy’s doing something for a long stretch. I know you’re all giddy haha, baseballs beginning, its that time of year….

          • MattTruss223 says:
            (link)

@Tony, Do I need to temper 20 HRs, 10 Steals and a .250 avg? (He is on pace for a .300 avg and 81 bombs though!) Do you lift your hands and scream at the bottom of a roller coaster too? Or do you get excited in the anticaption? I just said he’s jacked and hit a bomb in his 2nd game. I wasn’t expecting his first homer to be so soon and I’m not expecting a 40 HR season.

          • mrobs says:
            (link)

@Tony, I fully expect him to keep his pace and go 80/80/160/.333 hopefully with a couple steals thrown in there.

      • MattTruss223 says:
        (link)

@Wilsonian, FWIW, I checked out some field dimensions tonight. It’s 361 to the gaps at the Tokyo Dome, 367 at O.co. Tokyo Dome has a 14 foot wall, not sure the height on those O.co walls, they change up as it goes around. Not too far off…Cust Kayin’

    • AbNormal says:
      (link)

@MattTruss223, I’m definitely excited from what I’ve seen from him so far — not only his homer, and double — just how composed he’s been so far. I think in his first ABs Felix started him off way inside and brushed him back, he then whiffed on 3 straight breaking pitches, second AB, again very inside and was HPB, then still roped that double on another breaking pitch. He wasn’t intimidated, and that’s what I liked the most.

    SS – Reyes
    MI – Kelly Johsnon
    CM – Aramis Ramirez

RP – Farnsworth, Putz, Brian Wilson, De Los Santos
Bench Pitchers: Naftali Feliz, Roy Oswalt, Vinnie Pestano, Glen Perkins

My catchers are below average (would you start Molina over Mesoraco?)

Question Razzball aces! 12team $260 auction 6×6 keeper league (standard plus holds and tb+bb) We keep 5 guys for up to three years and their cap number increases $5 in the first year, $10 in the second and $15 in the third. I’ve kept J.Upton $30 (1), G.Stanton $16 (2), C.Kimbrel $7 (1), and M.Napoli $6 (1). For my last keeper I can keep Jennings at $6 (1), I.Kennedy at $10 (1), Bumgarner at $14 (2) or Votto at $39 (3). I think Votto is too expensive. I’d like to keep Bumgarner but at $14 it is a tossup since I’m guessing he goes for under $20 in my league anyhow but I really don’t want to keep another outfielder especially when Jennings value is hurt a bit in my league type. Sure wish Yahoo would DL BJ and Storen already. Why does it matter if they DL them now or next Wednesday? It’s gonna be backdated just in case, anyway. Don’t they know I’ve gotta pick someone up? They need to have my fantasy teams in mind when dealing with real life baseball shizz. Geez…

    • brettj72 says:
      (link)

@Wilsonian, it’s not so much Yahoo’s fault as it is the Ray’s fault. It has to happen in real life before it can happen in fantasy land.

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@brettj72, true, got a little ahead of myself. Just annoyed that everyone is saying “so and so will start the year on the DL.” Well, why the hell does it matter if you do it now or later? Like I said, it’ll get backdated anyway.

        • DonSlaughtOnslaught says:
          (link)

@Wilsonian, I think you are getting confused about retroactive DLing. It is to get guys off of the DL sooner, not throw them on there whenever and then get extra time out of it.

If I put BJ Upton on the DL today, he needs to come off in 15 days or go back on. If I wait until Thursday, I can backdate it to the last time he played (get him off earlier than 15 actual days from DL placement) or wait the full 15.

          • Wilsonian says:
            (link)

@DonSlaughtOnslaught, no confusion here. What I’m saying is: why not retroactively put him on now and backdate it until the last time he played? That was over a week ago. Meaning they could maintain an extra spot on their roster until he’s ready, be it in a week or whatever. I totally understand how the DL works, unless there is some magical formula that I’m unaware of that doesn’t allow players to be retroactively put on the DL during Spring Training.

            • DonSlaughtOnslaught says:
              (link)

@Wilsonian, Because he might be out for weeks and they don’t have to set their 25 man until their first game? If they put him on now and backdate it, they may have a decision to make before he is healthy. I just don’t see any benefit to a team putting a guy on the DL before they have to, short of you being able to pick up Michael Brantley or whoever, which I see you pointed out in your first post, so cheers.

*I had this same issue with Liriano going on the DL last spring.

              • Wilsonian says:
                (link)

@DonSlaughtOnslaught, that could be the variable I’m not looking at. But if they don’t have to set the rosters yet, why would it matter? Plus, I know people get on the 15 day DL and stay on it for longer than 15 days all the time. I may not fully know how all of that works, and what timeframe comes in to play making them come off. But I know people like Nelson Cruz hit the 15 day DL for a month at a time. So I’m not sure they would be forced to take him off before he is ready. You may know more on this and be able to ‘splain it better.

Luckily I only have him in my shallow league, so there are options out there. I just like to beat everyone to the punch.

                Thanks for your input.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @nick m., I don’t like Edwin…

  28. Ed Nugent says:
    (link)

SP – Lee, Weaver, Beachy, Anibal, Wandy, Chacin, Cahill

RP – Betancourt, Motte, Jansen, Crain, HRod, Lidge

@Everyone – Should I drop Cahill to grab Casilla (or Romo)? Or drop Chacin? I think my pitching is deep enough to get rid of one of them and I could stream matchups there if need be. Thanks

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@Ed Nugent, Hold for now. Sounds like Wilson is okay after all…

  29. Mr. Rickey says:
    (link)

Have Bonifacio at 3B but could pick up Moustakas. Would have to drop one of these from my bench:

    Logan Morrison
    Torii Hunter
    Jar Jar

Feel good about the team except for 3B.

    • Wilsonian says:
      (link)

@Mr. Rickey, I like Moose better than Boneface at 3B. Depending on the rest of your pitching and how deep a league it is, I’d probably lose Jar Jar. Hunter if you have the bench bats already.

  30. Jim says:

Grey, What ya think of Allen Craig this year? Like a 4th-5th OF with upside?

    • Grey

@Jim, Like him better at 2nd.

RUDY!!! Begging you for those AL-Only Pointshares, man! Got an auction tomorrow – any chance they are going up at some point today? Thanks in advance – Rudy can’t fail…me!

  32. Ralph says:
    (link)

Is it time to go all-in on Morneau? People seem to like him less than Dunn, but I think he has more upside and a better chance of getting back to pre-injury form.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@Ralph, Not really going all-in when you draft someone in the 25th round… You can take the flyer if you like… I like him more than Dunn, but not by much…

  34. Tony says:

grey or anyone- 14 team Yahoo H2H, not very deep benches, daily moves too, would you drop Chris Davis or Alex Presley to pick up Henry Rodriquez?

    My staff is:

    RP-Marmol & Farnsworth….

      @rvde, Yeah, it’s not great…

    • 3FingersBrown says:
      (link)

@rvde, I had a feeling this would happen. Olivo was their biggest HR threat last year (if you can call 19 HR a threat) so why would they take him out of their still crappy lineup? I see Jesus getting his C but it may take longer than people expected.

  41. xxxthetoadxxx says:

Giving up Santos and Beachy, getting Shields. I have 6 closers, so thats not the issue, I would likely replace Santos with a starter and Niemann, H Bailey, and Niciaso, or Terheran are the best available. Would you pull the trigger?

    • Wilsonian says:
      (link)

      @xxxthetoadxxx, too much for Shields.

    • DonSlaughtOnslaught says:
      (link)

@xxxthetoadxxx, Why? I think Santos will be an awesome closer, and what are you gaining from Beachy to Shields?

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@DonSlaughtOnslaught, exactly. Bad trade for you.

  42. farcus says:
    (link)

here’s my team from my shallow (but competetive) 8 team 6×6 (OBP and OBPA) family league:

    C Wieters
    1B Pujols
    2B Kendrick
    3B Prado
    SS Han Ram
    CI Fielder
    MI Kelly Johnson
    OF Bruce
    OF Werth
    OF Rasmus
    OF Rios
    Util Montero
    BN Tabata

    SP F-Her
    SP Sabathia
    RP Motte
    RP Balfour
    P Street
    P Frank Frank
    P Wainwright
    BN Moore
    BN Gallardo
    BN Mad Bum
    BN Zimmerman
    BN Beachy

I think I’ve got holes at 3B and MI, and could use some outfield help, and my SPs are ridiculously strong. I offered Matt Moore to my cousin for Youk and he countered with Youk for Moore & Montero. Is that too much for Youk, or does it fill my needs nicely enough to go for it?

    Thanks.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@farcus, You do have holes, too many of them for an 8 team league. That’s too much for Youk.

      • farcus says:
        (link)

@Grey, thanks. How would you feel about countering Youk + McCutchen for Montero, Moore, Gallardo?

  43. Luke says:
    (link)

Grey, you da man. Help me with a trade offer…

11 team 5X5 roto, obp instead of avg QS instead of wins.

Player one is extremely short on obp and has kinsler and cano. Player 2 is projected to win obp fairly easily but is starting jemile weeks at 2b (kelly johnson is on the FA wire). Player 1 gives up kinsler and greinke for Votto and Worley.

    Thoughts?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Luke, Terrible trade for Votto… Too much…

  44. ThE sHiT says:
    (link)

@Grey: Ok, here are the results of my money league, 12 team H2H, shallow rosters. Scoring categories are for hitters are: AB, H, 1B, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, SB, BB, K, TB, AVG
Pitching categories are: IP, W, L, CG, SO, SV, ER, HR, BB, K, ERA, WIN%, BSV.

Some guys drafted pretty stupid, yes i know, get better competition. Been playing in leagues for years with these guys, they are fun, etc…I punted saves.

    C Weiters
    1B Votto
    2B Espinoza
    3B Lawrie
    SS Cozart
    OF CarGo
    OF Stanton
    OF Bruce
    UTIL BJ

    SP Bum
    SP Latos
    SP Gio
    SP Zimm
    SP Anibal
    SP Beachy
    SP Scherzer
    SP Minor

There are still some decent guys on the wire. I am thinking of dropping an SP (Minor or Scherzer) and picking up an extra bat, OF for now to take BJ’s spot. I should be able to trade an arm for an upgrade at MI sometime after the season starts. What are your thoughts?

    • Grey

      Grey says:

Pizza Buona! Yeah, your team is stacked… A deeper league would be better too… You get in an RCL?

      • ThE sHiT says:
        (link)

@Grey, So tell me you tried the pizza?!?! Yeah we were a 16 team league two years ago, when i won it, a 14 team league last year. The commish has had trouble getting everyone to come back in past years obviously. It is still pretty competitive. Last year i finished 10th, horrible injury luck for my hitters. Anyhow, yes i got into an RCL, it was the team i posted on Tuesday night.

        • chata says:
          (link)

          @ThE sHiT,

perhaps the reason people aren’t returning to play in the league is
because some of your categories are …. what’s the word ? …. “wonky”?

          IP is a category ??

also , by having no closers ,
you lose the Saves category every week ,
          but win the BSV’s ???

as the say on the ‘shark tank’ ….. i’m out .

      • ThE sHiT says:
        (link)

@Grey, Oh yeah, i almost forgot….I finally tried the Grilled Cheese Truck last night. Their signature one with the mac n cheese and pulled pork was excellent. But way too pricey imo. Either way, I’m tracking it down again sometime soon.

@Grey, What’s the latest on Bourjos’ hip injury? Concern for this year? He was just dropped in my league and I’m wondering if his owner knows something I don’t. If he’s healthy, I have Rasmus and Alonso on my bench – who do you drop for him? Thanks!

  48. @Grey: I grabed Aaron Hill at the end bc I wasnt super stoked about having Tabata/Rasmus as my 3rd OF (I figured I could put Kendrick in OF and move Hill to 2B if they struggled). However, my pitching is weak and I plan on streaming a SP everyother day or so. I will need to drop someone on my team to make room, should I dump Aaron Hill or Greg Holland?
