Here’s a bad thing — I’m already excited about drafting Avisail Garcia.  I’m writing this in November and posting it in December and am already excited about him.  This is dangerous.  My expectations are already through the roof.  I just have this feeling that this is gonna spell D-O-O-M.  See, I can’t have anything nice.  Watch a story come out that Avisail and his brother, Jpegsail, are in some kind of weird fishing accident or get arrested with a megaton of weed.  Or something.  Something will happen.  Though, I’m praying and vsdnjs;nzwc — Oops — and crossing my fingers that nothing happens to Avisail.  That he makes it to Opening Day as the starting right fielder for the White Sox and batting third.  Yes, third.  Who else is batting in that lineup?  Jose Abreu?  I went over my Jose Abreu fantasy and he can be solid, but he’s more of a cleanup hitter.  Maybe Avisail is batting 2nd.  But there’s no way he’s below fifth.  Beckham’s three shades of crizzap, Alexei Ramirez is a’ight but not a three hole hitter, Dunn and Konerko are either gone or hot garbage that is four years past its born-on date and Viciedo is great…every three weeks for two days at a time.  Who else is batting third?  Phegley?  Why?  The White Sox need someone whose last name sounds like it’s being pronounced with a fur ball in your mouth?  Avisail Garcia will have every opportunity to succeed, so what can we expect of him in 2014 fantasy baseball and what makes him a sleeper?

We’ll get the negatives out of the way first.  Avisail is so allergic to walks he sneeze-swings on potential ball fours.  He once broke out in hives just watching Jonathan Sanchez warming up.  Last year in 256 plate appearances, he walked 9 times.  Hehe.  That’s awful.  So, with any guy that doesn’t take a walk there’s always a chance they fall into a terrible slump and can’t swing their way out.  Usually starts as a one week slump, then they’re 1-for-56 with zero walks and the club is talking about them going to the minors and they’re talking to a shrink about their mommy issues.  It can get ugly.  This has never — I repeat in big letters — NEVER been an issue for Garcia anywhere in his career.  He makes solid contact and has good speed, so he projects to have a good BABIP and shouldn’t hit below .260, in the worst case scenario.  The positives are too many to mention, but I’ll try.  He hits line drives, but is not afraid to homer, he can steal twenty bases, hit for .300, will be in a hitters’ park, has little competition for playing time, hits righties well, and learned the Serbo-Croatian language in three weeks without use of the Rosetta Stone.  No task too hard for Garcia; no feat too small unless he’s looking at the bottom of a dwarf’s legs.  A 20/20 season seems within the realm of possibility, but I won’t go that far with my projections.  For 2014, I’ll give him the line of 75/18/79/.287/14 with the chance to blow those projections out of the water without getting in any weird fishing accident with Jpegsail.

First time commenting on my favorite site. First year playing in a league w/ keepers. We can keep up to four guys for four years for $4/year + their auction price ($8 2nd year, $12 3d, $16 4th). Question: Who do I keep? One guy’s gotta go!

    $6 – Hosmer
    $8 – Machado
    $5 – Pedro Alvarez
    $1 – Puig
    $1 – Shelby Miller

Any input is appreciated. As is the razzball info/humor. Cheers!

3rd time in the last 2 days that i’ve heard garcia being touted as a sleeper .
guessing that by january , he’ll be a household name .
    with a 1st name of avis-ail , am expecting that he’ll bat # 2
    and try harder .

@costaricanchata: I don’t know, I get easily confused with Latin American names, so I could see that happening to managers less in the know. I had him and Oswaldo Arcia confused for the first couple months.

@costaricanchata: For some more knowledgeable players he’ll be on their radar and overdrafted… For some, he’ll be undrafted… For others, he’ll be around a 150-ish ADP…

Grey, thanks for the writeup! I was wondering, in the War Room, will you label your sleepers with the callouts or within Tiers of “players you want”? Further, will there be a summation of your sleepers at some point in time where future Grey will say “I went over my Avisail Garcia fantasy here”. I am trying to make note of all your sleepers, I am just trying to make sure I don’t miss any (ya know, parenthood, work and holidays get in the way of FBB sometimes).

This Action Figure is actually pretty Rare these days, but when we first got him in at the store I was working at in New Zealand I wondered why he had a Moustache when there were clearly NO people in Middle Earth sporting Tom Selleck 80’s style facial hair – Lots of Beards in LOTR, not Mo’s. He looks like somebody’s sleezy Uncle with his slicked back Dyed hair, Thick Brown Moustache and Pudgy face. NOT a Middle Earth Gondorian Warrior.

I have an Ottoneu points trade question. I’ve been offered David Wright ($31) for Chase Headley ($10), Ike Davis ($9) and Cory Luebke ($4). I feel like the biggest thing I’m giving up is cap space and I think I’ll need to cut a $17 C.J. Wilson if I do this deal. However, I won’t be able to upgrade at 3B in the draft and Davis/Luebke are both expendable. Should I get Wright?

@goodfold2: thinking trading dempster or somebody for MI upgrade though with schumaker/ryan pretty awful.

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

@goodfold2: all contracts in this league started at 2 year deals, so this coming season is the 2nd of 2. We get a franchise tag (have to pay player real life salary, at average per year money), restricted tag, and one any type of tag. the other method of keeping players is to give them a 2 year extension, which has to be decided upon before this coming season. the extension is for 2 more years (including this coming one, so 3 years more total) but the salary has to go up 6 million in years 3 and 4. which, if any, players should I be thinking about giving extentions to? sale only? I probably should be looking to free up money somewhere (dempster)

        • goodfold2 says:
          (link)

@goodfold2: 6 million more, but only once, years 3 and 4 would be the same number.

Team’s okay, but think of 30 team as a real team in the MLB… Would that team have made it to the playoffs? Seems doubtful… I don’t know what the best teams in your league look like though… You should trade AJ Ellis and just play d’Arnaud, if you can…

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

@Grey: probably not playoff team, but decent enough pitching to be .500 or so team, pretty good when you consider somebody else just gave this team up. the team I thought was open was much, much worse, actually having to start MI who aren’t even starters like bloomquist.
        other ideas.
        1. if guys like ciriaco only cost 400K (minimum in this league) why the hell do I have brendan ryan costing over 4 times that. may want to just drop him and have to pay half of the contract.
2.since I have to decide who gets the 6 mil extensions before this season (it locks them up for an additional 2 years on top of this year).
        3. along with dumping ellis (for d’arnaud out of the minors) I could also dump reed johnson or dobbs to bring up leonys as well.
        4. find some way to dump or trade b.chen as well. gotta be other starters at least near as good as him for minimum or close to it, to get my 2.25 million back.

            @Grey:
            1. turns out I don’t get stuck with half of the contract until after this season (or guys I bid on, doesn’t apply to guys already on roster) so ryan’s for sure gone. there are decent MI in free agent land anyway for the minimum (mercer/sogard/herrera) or more expensive guys (k.johnson 6.375, aviles 1.2)
            4. turns out only even halfway decent SP in free agent land are
            morton (2.445)
            vargas (4.85)
            lewis (3.25)
            gaudin/c.torres/redmond (minimum).
this doesn’t seem deep enough to just dump b.chen, correct. redmond and c.torres seem interesting maybe.
            5. league IS deep with RP for cheap (6X6 with holds) though with
cotts/d.carpenter/siegrist/vincent/shaw/medina/simon/w.smith(white)/diekman/rice/thatcher all at minimum. this would make it seem like I should just drop de Vries/Bonderman as i’d much rather have 1 of those cheap starters and/or 1 or 2 of those RP than these 2 bums?
            6. is chris heston (SF) even worth keeping over any of those guys i mentioned. i have no idea who he even is

@Grey: according to Baseball Prospectus and Shandler’s Baseball Forecaster he had good AA numbers in 2012 (2 WARP in 148 innings that year); but has no fastball and only gets by in minors due to being extreme control artist.

Hey Grey! Totally of-topic here, but would like to hear your opinion. I get to keep 10 players in my Yahoo 12 team 8 x 8 keeper league (extra non-standard cats are batter K, OBP, XBH, pitcher BB, Holds, QS). So, about 125 players will be kept, and then we draft the remainder. I can get Strasburg and a late 2nd rd. pick (#22) in the supplemental draft for Ellsbury & Wright. I will have the 1st pick in the supplemental draft, so if he is added to the game in the pre-season I could take Buxton to replace Ellsbury and wait it out until Buxton gets the call. By trading 2 for 1, it clears a keeper spot for me to keep Sano as my 3B of the future (or maybe Wheeler as another SP). As far as this year, I have Edwin Encarnacion to play 3B, and I can slide over Allen Craig from Utility to play 1B. I just need to add a stopgap CF until Buxton is ready, or find another CF if Buxton does not get added to the game. I’m thinking I probably win big in this deal from no later than year 3 onward, and that I’m selling high on Ells and buying low on Stras. Starting pitching was my weakness last season (hitting was not, but Halladay and Haren both went bust for me), and the best SPs I currently have rostered are Shields, Wacha (keeping both of these guys), Liriano, Wheeler, Salazar & CJ Wilson. I’m thinking I have to take advantage of the window on being able to add Strasburg. Thoughts?

      Makes sense, take Strasburg…

Wait, is that David Wright with Ellsbury? Eh, that’s not a great trade…

      • Chin Music says:
        (link)

Yeah, it’s David Wright. But how much longer is Ellsbury going to be a 40+ SB guy? And Wright is as naked as ever in that awful Mets lineup (sadly, my home team). If this were a standard yearly league I’d never consider it. We also have an IP cap at 1750, so K/IP does play a factor. Both Ells & Wright of are over 30 and injury prone. Strasburg is 25. The other manager thinks he can win this year, I’m not sure that I can. He’ll get 2 good seasons out of those guys, but after that, I think it’s a crapshoot. Stras will be entering his prime at that point. There’s a lot of good 3B talent coming in the next couple of seasons — Sano, Franco, Bryant — I’m sure I can snag one of those guys. SP might be deep, but a healthy Strasburg is still top 3-5 elite.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

Yeah, it’s tough… If you’re really feeling it, go for it… But you can win this year, it’s 12 team league, anyone can win…

          • Chin Music says:
            (link)

I would still have Encarnacion, Craig, Bogaerts, Braun, Rios, Strasburg, Shields, Wacha, Liriano as my first 9, with Wheeler, Molina, Salazar, Sano and I supose even Bundy as possibilities for #10. And potentially Buxton down the stretch. Yeah, that team might have a shot this year if a lot of things go right.

            • Grey

              Grey says:
              (link)

Your pitching, that you’re saying was the root of your problems, doesn’t look that bad… Yeah, I could see it for Strasburg, but you’re paying the price for him…

              • Chin Music says:
                (link)

Pitching does look better, but Braun’s health/suspension was also a killer last season, and I had to use roster spots for Wheeler, Wacha, Bogaerts & Liriano while they were still in the minors. Salazar made a splash late in the season. I just didn’t get enough IP from those guys in 2013 to get out of the hole Halladay, Haren & Hope for Rain dug for me early on.

                    @Grey:

So, I didn’t do that Strasburg trade in my keeper league. Instead, I moved Wright to a different manager for Gerritt Cole and a swap of draft picks– I move up from a 4th rd. pick to a 2nd rounder (#21 pick, about 125 players get kept), which still could net me a longterm guy I like like maybe Sano, a top 10 closer, or a #5 or 6 SP. I’m a Mets fan, and I love Wright, but Cole is pretty damn good already and was a lot cheaper than Stras. I still have Edwin to play at 3B for one more year (Yahoo league), I can move Craig over to 1B and I don’t have my Utility spot blocked by Craig anymore.

same dynasty where i’m throwing away a bunch of churls. dude just came at me with his
    a.escobar (.4 mil, minimum)
round 3 and 4 of this year’s draft (don’t know what part of round yet)
    for my
    prado (4.57 mil)
    round 5 2015
On it’s face this can’t be done simply because prado is worth so much more (i think) but what if i add in my dempster (14 mil huge contract) for his medlen (.4 minimum). All contracts expire after 2014 season. Or are we too worried about whether or not medlen starts or not. I don’t need him if he’s back to RP status. This opp has 2/3 of his budget left for this coming year, I only have 10 out of 100 million.

Is Avisail Garcia worth a look in a shallow league? Or is it best to leave him potentially undrafted (not sure if he’d make it to the waiver wire) and pick him up if he starts to heat up?
