Don't be shellfish...FacebookTwitterGoogle+

On each Sunday we’re going to try and answer your 2008 fantasy baseball questions. Is this every fantasy baseball question we receive? No, but it’s a few of the better ones that were emailed directly to us at info[at]razzball.com. So if you want some fantasy baseball advice that can’t get answered in the comments section, then there you go. Please ask the minor questions i.e. Should I drop Eric Hinske for Johnny Cueto? (yes, you should) in the comment section. It’ll be a quicker answer there from Grey or I (or even a regular commenter). Thanks, we really do appreciate your support and feedback. (But if you try to hug me, it might get weird.)

QUESTION:

Love the site, and wanted to ask you another trade question if possible.  12 team, daily transaction, mixed keeper (five) league.  There is a 1500 innings limit, hence my large number of setup guys.  Currently, I am rolling, big time, but looking down the road I was offered a trade today that I am considering, but would like some feedback.  Here’s my current lineup:

Webb, Brandon (P)
Jenks, Bobby (P)
Lincecum, Tim (P)
Guardado, Eddie (P)-Yeah, I know he’s gotta go soon…..
Franklin, Ryan (P)
Saunders, Joe (P)
Scherzer, Max (P)
Maine, John (P)
Cain, Matt (P)
Buchholz, Taylor (P)
McGowan, Dustin (P)

Soto, Geovany (C)
Napoli, Mike (C)
Jackson, Conor (1B)
Hudson, Orlando (2B)
Cantu, Jorge (3B)
Rollins-ss
Guillen-CI
Pedroia-MI
CLee-OF
Berkman-OF
Matsui-OF
Bay-OF
Werth-OF
Stairs-OF
Crede-Bench
D.DeJesus-Bench
C.Ianetta-Bench
Figgins-DL
Keppinger-DL

Currently, I am in the top four in everything ‘cept saves. I originally offered dude Matt Cain for Brian Wilson.  He comes back with Cain and Berkman for ARod, Brian Wilson, Delmon Young, and Brian Bannister. I’m thinking that I can swap out Bannister for Billingsley. Here’s dude’s roster:

P      Bannister, Brian (KC)
P     Wilson, Brian (SF)
P     Chamberlain, Joba (NYA)
P     Weaver, Jered (LAA)
P     Billingsley, Chad (LAD)
P     Myers, Brett (PHI)
P     Saito, Takashi (LAD)
P     Rivera, Mariano (NYA)
P     Rodriguez, Francisco (LAA)
C     Martin, Russell (LAD)
C     Towles, J.R. (HOU)
1B     Garko, Ryan (CLE)
2B     Phillips, Brandon (CIN)
3B     Mora, Melvin (BAL)
SS     Young, Michael (TEX)
CI     Hinske, Eric (TB)
MI     Iwamura, Akinori (TB)
OF     Bowker, John (SF)
OF     Young, Delmon (MIN)
OF     Patterson, Corey (CIN)
OF     Upton, Justin (ARI)
OF     Ethier, Andre (LAD)
Util     Giambi, Jason (NYA)
Bn     Headley, Chase (SD)
Bn     Gonzalez, Gio (OAK)
Bn     Bruce, Jay (CIN)
Bn     Gomes, Jonny (TB)
DL     Rodriguez, Alex DL (NYA)

Whaddya think?  Berkman certainly can’t keep up this pace, but damn is he good this year…..Thanks in advance and keep up the good work.  Your blog has been a must read for me :)

ANSWER:

Thanks for reading the blog and writing into us!

It’s good you’re looking down the road as it’s easy to stand pat after a big start.  I like your team but, obviously, some of your team’s success is from fast (and probably unsustainable) stars by Webb, Lincecum, Maine, Berkman, and your Soto/Napoli catcher tandem.

I’m going to go with the assumption that he won’t swap Bannister for Billingsley (who is on par with Cain – so what’s the point?).  I’d say Bannister and D. Young (at this point) are barely above the value of free agents so I don’t factor them in.  You’re looking at Cain/Berkman for B-Wilson/A-Rod.

I’d go for it.  A-Rod is a big upgrade over Cantu or Figgins and should be back soon.  If you’re in a Yahoo! league, you can move Figgins to 2B or MI when he gets back.  Cain/Wilson is close to a wash given how much you can gain from more Saves.  And, who knows, maybe Delmon Young comes around…he does have 20/20 potential.  Adding Billingsley makes it that much bettter of a trade…

Hurts to give up Berkman but I feel like you’re selling high.

Good luck!

Hey guys, I’ve been a reader this whole season and this is now easily my favorite fantasy baseball site.

Quick question – would you guys be comfortable starting Stephen Drew at SS in a 12 team mix for the remainder of the season? Right now I’ve got Carlos Guillen but I could flip him for Javier Vazquez.

@mike: Tough call cause it’s very close. But I would do the trade. Harang’s better than Wainwright and Weeks is struggling pretty mightily and always a sneeze away from an injury.

@Junker23: I would be less comfortable with Drew, but comfortable enough that I would do that trade. Go get Vazquez.

Does Scherzer get a start next week?

@Russ: Looks like he might, no word yet from ‘Backs, but Davis is due back this week.

    Tex or Atkins today?

Dunn Quentin Hart, Pick Two for today?

    thanks

@Grey: well, i’m looking at scherzer, blackburn (at home), or gorzelanny.

i would only start gorzy if blackburn and scherzer broke both legs. what do you think with blackburg/mad max?

    Taken from yesterday’s entry line:

OK what kind of packaging would you put together to upgrade the outfield? As to his team sucking more than mine you’re right – he is 1 and 5 and I’m 6-0. I’ll give you credit for some of those wins. Especially the one in which the guy predicted my team lossing for the whole league to see and he had to pass out the congrats before Sunday even finished.
My active outfield is Quentin, Vlad, Pence and Votto is now my utility player. Damon, Wells, Kemp, and Figgins are sitting on the bench.

My infield is Morneau/Votto, Kinsler, Greene, and ARam/Figgins. Someone wants to move Carlos Guillen for a one to one player trade. What do you think?

Well is the week in baseball complete or will they get the subway series underway?

Before I go one of my leaguemates who like to add/drop based on two starts let go of Pettitte. My starters and closers are: Beckett, Bedard, Hudson, Shields, Cueto, Harden, Papelbon, Ryan, and Rauch. Put in a claim? Who would drop? Based on my plan of building I don’t think I shoudl drop but an arm like Pettitte and a team like the Yanks shouldn’t be tossed aside.

Im in desperate need for a closer and I could use a solid ace. Im thinking about offering Oswalt and Chris Young for Bedard and Smoltz, good move? My rotation would be Bedard, Verlander, Wainwright, Billingsley, Mcgowan, Weaver, Edwin Jackson, Duchscherer and Rich Hill. My closers would be Capps, Gagne and Smoltz.

@mike: Krispie? Or the tall pitcher? If it’s Krispie, it’s a good trade from your standpoint, just not sure if it’s going to go through b/c Oswalt’s saying he has a sore elbow. That might turn people off.

@BSA: If that’s your whole staff, there’s no one on your staff to drop for Pettitte.

What do you expect from Scott Rolen from here on out? I thought he was washed up last year. Hitting well so far, but on that terrible offense…

Just curious, who has your vote in the 08 election =p

@Adam: I think if he can avoid the DL, he could have a usable season, but nothing dramatically exciting. Say 75/17/80/.275

@Chase: If voting made a difference, it would be illegal.

As part of trade negotiations involving a handful of players, i was offered Utley for Rollins. I don’t exactly get why that was offered (neither was part of the mix prior) and to me at least, they are almost equal in value, am I wrong? Should I prefer Utley over Rollins?

@Ethan: I think Utley is better than Rollins, but only barely.

@RNMan: Downs, Torres, Perez, Eddie G, Devine, then Foulke. But if LaRussa calls on Perez to close, he could be way out in front of these other guys.

    @Freak: Maybe the All-Star break.

I have a trade offer in a head to head points league… Aramis Ramirez for Brandon Lyon and Adam Wainwright although I think i would rather have Brett Myers instead of Wainwright. I have Joe Crede and Alex Gordon that I could platoon at 3rd base… My pitching staff is Brandon Webb, Micah Owings, Ben Sheets, Darrell Rasner, Jair Jurgens, Gil Meche, Chris Young, Vicente Padilla.. My relievers are Capps, Mo Rivera and Jon Rauch… Starting lineup is 4 starters and 2 relievers…
    What do you guys think?

  26. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@DMurr: I’d prefer Wainwright than Myers, but Aram is giving a bit too much with your team. You can already start Webb, Sheets, Jurrjens and Young and you have enough relievers in that format.

I’m in an extremely shallow league (8 teams), so starting pitching is fairly abundant. Someone just offered me Sabathia and Victor Martinez for Kerry Wood and Brian McCann. I’m pretty happy with both McCann and Wood, but Martinez seems like an upgrade over McCann and Sabathia for Wood seems like a great deal. What do you guys think?

  29. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@Michael: I think the upgrade of Sabathia from Wood makes that deal too good to pass up even if V-Mart has struggled. I’d do it.

  30. Get Figgy with It says:

Someone offered me Joe Saunders for Kerry Wood. My SP are…Billingsley, Maine, Carmona, Scherzer, and then Liriano & Rich Hill. My RP are…Papelbon, Wood, BJ Ryan, Fuentes, and Borowski. I have a lot of closers and lead my H2H league in saves but my SP is thin to say the least right now. This is a 12 team league. What do you think of Saunders and the deal.

  31. Closers are a fixed (albeit somewhat disposable) commodity whereas mediocre starters aren’t. Saunders is projected as a low K pitcher with around 5.00 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. His 3.6 K/9 IP and 1.6 K/BB ratios are AWFUL. The only real change from his performance last year is that he’s getting lucky with balls that are in play – it’s .240 instead of an expected .300.

I’d rather take a pitcher off the waiver wire and hold onto Wood. That, or get a better starter like Wainwright (despite his recent troubles) or someone with better potential like Snell.

Thanks for the great info and response speed faster than ichiro out of the box. Anyways, if you were me in this league, with the following lineup, would you try to make a move to address a weakness (most obvious I think is SP) and what weaknesses do you see?

    C – Mauer
    1B – Teixeira
    2B – BJ Upton
    3B – Garrett Atkins Diet
    SS – Reyes
    OF – Francoeur
    OF – Corey Hart-Throb
    OF – Carlos Lee
    UTIL – Adrian Gonzalez

    BN – Longoria
    BN – Kouzmanoff
BN – Jay Bruce Almighty (I’m claiming the nickname if anyone hasn’t yet btw)

    SP – Carmona
    SP – Billingsley
    SP – Maine
    SP – Scherzer
    RP – Papelbon
    RP – Wood
    RP – Fuentes
    RP – BJ Ryan
    RP – Borowski
NA – Rich Hill & Liriano

My worst categories compared to the rest of the league totals have been: Runs (Ranked 8/12), HR (11/12), K (10/12), and WHIP (10/12). Standard 5×5 scoring.

  33. @Get Figgy with It: Good timing on the first one. Ok, let’s see. Your hitting is stacked. How many teams are in this league?

You’re #11 in HR? I suppose your guys are starting off slow in HRs but I’m not worried about hitting w/ this squad.

You could use better starters but you don’t have much depth to trade from. I’d consider trading Reyes for Webb or Santana or Hart for guys like Hamels, Haren, or Lackey. Figure you can either get their SS back in the trade and give them JoBro or Longoria or you’ll find a SS on waivers (should be plenty if no MI). Basically, I think Reyes and Hart were overrated at draft time so still might command more than their worth…

    Hope this helps -
    Rudy

Ok so the guy who offered me the Saunders for Wood deal offered me up another and it was funny cause he wants Reyes which you said to try and trade. He offere me Yunel Escobar and Tim Lincecum for Reyes and Wood. Thoughts?

  35. Given Reyes’ draft position and SB/R potential, I think just him for Lincecum/Escobar is a questionable deal – let alone with Wood. If he wants Wood, I think you need a 3rd player back or you swap two players and get an upgrade (e.g., Mauer for Soto).
