from what i have seen , there’s not a philanthropic bone in mj’s body .
and probably never will be .
i consider it a character flaw .

@BigFatHippo: See - Sportscenter can be educational after all! Seriously, I can remember seeing the UNC-Georgetown game on TV here all those years ago when MJ made the game-winng shot. Couldn't say I've followed college basketball religiously since - more just had an interest in US sport generally. I have read Halberstam's biography of Jordan in which he examines the UNC program in some depth and from this distance it certainly seems as though they stress all the right values both in basketball and more generally.

@Steve: Tis that, yes. I'm impressed that you know your college hoops. Sorry I don't know anything about cricket, looks like fun. We have too many sports in the US, hard to concentrate on others. I'm becoming a very fine bocce ball player though. So I got that going for me.

@Grey: Last year's player of the year, prolly this year's too. Turn on ESPN. He's a clinic in college hoops. I love the fact that the kid comes from the bootheel, not NYC, Boston, LA, etc. Kinda makes me proud.

A lot of expatriates involved, I’d say.

I guess that baseball has taken such a hold it makes it hard for cricket to gain wider appeal. Just like baseball will never really take off here because everyone already play cricket.

Well, not everyone, but you know what I mean.

BTW, I have just (ahem) acquired the first series of Entourage. Watched a bit last night. Bearing in mind what you said about it (which did temper my expectations a little, but in a good way it turns out), it just seems like 30 mins of watchable, entertaining TV – no more, no less.

@Grey: Oh – I have barely scratched the surface. It’s a game of a million nuances. One of the craziest is that a game can last five days and can end with no one winning.

It also has a very rich culture and history. It is to us (and England, Australia, South Africa, India and other cricket-playing nations) what baseball is to you.

Yeah – the bowlers (for that is what they are called) are able to impart spin on the ball with their fingers at the point of delivery which can help it to deviate on landing. Also, by keeping one side of the ball shiny and smooth, while letting the other side rough up, they are able to get it to swing or swerve as it moves through the air towards the batsman.

Yeah – it’s a summer sport and I am a fan. And former player.

I want to know how left handed people play foos it seems like it would be backwards right? And cricket games can last a few days right or do they just go till the crickets get tired?
