I drafted ARod in a deep league and need someone to fill in until he returns. Thoughts on Jed Lowrie or Kevin Kouzmanoff who are available on waivers.

I sorta punted 3B and ended up with Lowell and Andy LaRoche. Dang it. My life is over. But wait. Everything else looks alright, and I got Felix, Wainwright, Josh Johnson on my staff with some cheap closers. I just feel a little dirty for punting such a huge position, but I got Utley, so I feel like it evens out. Question: When I find myself in the 17th, 18th and 19th rounds after having punted a 3rd baseman, should I start grabbing closers for trade bait, like the clever commenter above? I try not to rely on future trades in the middle of a draft, but I've noticed that saves will almost always get you something big. I got Bay for Gagne last year, before the season started. Bay for Gagne! Yes, Bay for Gagne. Someone called me a moron for giving up my saves.

While I doubt I'll pull off "Pujols for Percival," I bet I can find a saves-hungry sucker willing to give up Zimmerman or Gordon.

@Grey - I owe thanks to you for your thoughts and inspiration.

BTW, apropros of nothing, Funston just published his "Bigger Board" over at Yahoo. He's has Zimmerman #65. I don't know if you bother to read the competitors, but I have to say, without trying to sound to "suck up", yours is the one I use for my drafts.

@Grey - In my first Yahoo draft of the year which took place last night, I bagged Chipper at 3B. However, I decided I wanted Chipper insurance, so I made my first trade of the year - I picked up Zimmerman (who was drafted in the 7th) for Brad Ziegler (who I drafted in the 20th as a handcuff to Joey Devine). There's nothing like misleading stats from last year to help you make these kind of trades early in the year. Yes, I know Devine may be injured and Ziegler might pick up some saves, but, hey, there's always another crappy closer I can pick up later.

Wow I am glad I read the Berry v. Razzball recap here. Brilliant stuff. I think it's the masturbation joke at the end that made him uncomfortable. Which is ironic seeing as how he comes off (pun) as such a jerk-off in his columns, but whatevs.

You're way better, Grey. He doesn't even have a fuckin moustache!

Next up in the "Jew or not a Jew" game is Ian Snell.

(He's playing for Puerto Rico in the WBC, so there you go. I'd have lost that one.)

@mc serch: This is like when you and Nice had that beef with Vanilla Ice. I like Votto a bit more than Davis, so I would take him before Davis, but it's not a crazy reach to take either where you're suggesting.

I'm loving the hip hop style beef. Don't go to Vegas Grey! I thought the interview was very funny for whatever its worth. Anyway, I've decided that I must have C. Davis and Votto this year. Davis seems to be going in the 6th on a regular basis. Is it too much of a reach to take Davis in the 5th and Votto in the 6th? I usu. take all offense for the first 6 or 7 rds. Davis and Votto seem like a nice way to cap that run before turning to some pitching. For example, earlier I drafted, in order: Pujols, Beltran, Phillips, Victorino, Davis and Votto. I guess I'm just finding the options underwhelming in rounds 5-8.

@Colin: I'd expect 17 HRs, but tomato-tomahto.

@Ashley: Sanchez's extra innings and he lost himself so much last half that he worries me. I don't think on the Giants he's worth the risk. Of course, he's talented, but I'd take a pass this year and probably will like him next year.

Thanks Grey!

I offered Markakis, Halladay, Scherzer, and Weaver for Kemp and Billingsley... If it's accepted I'll add Parra and Jiminez.

Is there a reason why you like Sanchez the least? He went 8-5, 115 K's, 3.97 ERA in 111 IP pre-all star break. And was a disaster in the 2nd half.

I read the Matt Berry interview, initially I didn't because I wasn't sure if it was real.. He definitely doesn't have a sense of humor.. I went and read a couple of his article and atleast he seems to love Nolasco =)

But that's probably not a good thing..

I picked up Sandoval in a deal today for 2 players I'm not keeping. I expect him to hit 20 with 85-90 RBI.

Who do you guys like among Johnson, Slowey, Cueto, and Weaver?

I can get three out of the four. In addition, keep in this is a keeper H2H league and these are my bottom three pitchers (I am looking for upside). I leaning towards Slowey, Cueto, and Weaver. The main reason I have left out Johnson is his WHIP. I understand that Cueto will probably have the same trouble, but his K/9/upside make him worth the risk in my mind.

@Grey - I am only playing in a keeper league this year, and I think ill have to get him somehow. Unfortunately, I am having trouble getting in everyone I want at the bottom (Cueto and now Young).

Dingleberry has fans? I try not to listen to him or anyone of his ilk, but when I do they seem to just state the obvious.

@James: I like him a lot. Definitely worth a flier in some leagues. Has 20/20 potential.

@Garrett: Not sure what part isn't true when I have emails from their publicity department and an audio of the interview. He's just trying to save face because Deadspin linked to the interview the other day and he probably got crap for it from his buddies.

I just posted this, and this was his response:

"Tell David in Frisco to relax. The dude at Razzball is funny, and has great stuff (already called the Ervin injury, for example). You work in a public forum and should be able to take some criticism. You're coming off as extremely insecure. If you took the time to read his stuff you'd appreciate it. How did he ambush you when ESPN contacted him? He claims the interview is word for word other than deleting the boring parts, so I don't get what your problem is with the interview."

SportsNation Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto: (8:46 PM ET ) Garrett in Boston: Without getting too much into it, that's not true.

PS: I've officially turned into a FB loser getting in the middle of an expert quarrel, w 2 dudes I have never met.

So lame, he can't let this go. No he's a martyr for taking the question:

David(Frisco, TX): Thanks to your earlier post, I became aware of the XX interview. After reading it, it became apparent to me that the ego-maniac running that site is attempting to use the negative pub to garner attention for his efforts. If you read any of his previous work, then it is easy to conclude that he really believes that he is smarter than everyone else. That's always a sign of stupidity. Also, he has an unhealthy fascination with you and ESPN. It's obvious that he is jealous of your success. Good. Regardless, kudos to you for remaining profesional in a very unprofessional setting. Whoever posted that question earlier today was either that guy or someone without a clue. Either way, he (it?) didn't deserve any attention on your board. Now, if XX or whoever thinks you're God himself then I can understand his anger and resentment. But, you're just a dude who has worked hard to make the most of your opportunities. And, all you're really doing is giving us your thoughts as to an inherently unpredictable math problem with a multitude of variables and outside influences. It's just math or statistical analysis with color commentary. I find it hard to comprehend how anyone can get angry over your predictions. Accordingly, it's easy to make the necessary conclusions about him(it?). I don't want you to post this because I do not want XXX to get anymore publicity than he already has. Let's not reward his bad behavior. I know you don't need a pat on the back or the affirmations from a stranger to validate your work...but it can't hurt. Keep up the good job. It's stuff like this that makes me even more of a fan. I'll post this a few times to make sure it catches your eye. Have a good one bro.

SportsNation Matthew Berry - Talented Mr. Roto: (8:04 PM ET ) I edited it. Thanks for the kind words. It comes with the gig, what are you gonna do? But I like to be honest and answer questions I can - even if they are about uncomfortable subjects... not a big deal.

@John: Thanks for commenting and for reading. I enjoy this website because it's an open forum where people with all kinds of questions, ideas, and theories can bounce their thoughts off of one another. Open discourse is glorious, and open discourse about fantasy baseball is even better.

Earlier, I was commenting about the hypocrisy that is fantasy "expertise" as touted by ESPN and the like. Berry is but one of a generation of overpaid, overglorified "celebrities" hawking tired strategy and snake oil to the fantasy gaming masses.

For the record, I don't have any personal animosity toward Berry; I'm just cautiously pessimistic about any corporate-crowned fantasy gurus. I'm sure he doles out some good info; he wouldn't have a job if he didn't. It's just unfortunate that when Berry came into some GENTLE criticism and tomfoolery by the boys here that his response was to bash Razzball and its founders instead of having a sense of humor and remembering that he's not all that far removed from a blogger himself.

@John: Thanks for taking the minority view. Good analysis isn't exclusive to big sites or small sites.

It's impossible for a site to be everything to everyone and I both envy and don't envy Mr. Berry's job at ESPN. He's talking to a much larger audience that doesn't necessarily want the snark nor stats that we may produce.

We have nothing personal against Matthew Berry. I've read his stuff and, while it's not my cup of tea, it is fitting for the broad ESPN audience.

I didn't think our write-up of the interview particularly qualified as an 'ambush' and don't revel in being associated by him as the reason why blogs are awful. But we definitely dish it out here so can't expect not to get it in return...
