Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Between the two middle infield positions, I tend to draft a 2nd baseman early and punt shortstop.  This happens for a few reasons.  1) 2nd base has more talent.  That’s right, I draft the deeper position earlier.  Same reason I punt catchers and try to get a 1st baseman early.  If a position is deep, a lot of your leaguemates are going to have one of the top guys.  You don’t want to be one of the 3 or 4 teams without a top guy.  2) There’s less difference between a middle-tiered shortstop and a bottom-tiered one.  3) Shortstops tend to give value with the steal.  You can find cheap steals later.  Most of the 2nd basemen on this list are going after the top 100 in your 2010 fantasy drafts.  This is a supplement to the top 20 2nd basemen of 2010 fantasy baseball. These are 2nd basemen that I’ll be setting the ol’ crosshairs on at my 2010 fantasy drafts after the top options are gone.  Click on the player’s name where applicable to read more and see their 2010 projections.  Anyway, here’s some 2nd basemen to target for 2010 fantasy baseball:

Gordon Beckham – He doesn’t have 2nd base eligibility yet, but he will after the first week and a half.

Ian Stewart – Aw, geez, I’m hyping this guy too much.  I just have a soft spot for a guy with a piddling average who can steal a few bases and hit homers.  Or maybe it’s a hard spot… Hmm…

Rickie Weeks – Everyone’s been burned by Weeks at least once in their fantasy baseball life.  The good thing (or bad thing, if you’re Weeks) is he’s 27 this year.  If he doesn’t make good in 2010, we’ll be able to write him off.

Scott Sizemore – He’s either going to be the most picked up guy in April, or the most dropped.  My money’s on picking him up.

Kelly Johnson – I don’t think I’ve seen Kelly Johnson mock drafted once.  Now, either everyone is keeping Johnson under wraps so not to tip off anyone in mocks or no one wants Kelly Johnson.  The latter is wrong, I tell ya.  W to the rong.

Eric Young Jr. – Yeah, I don’t know what his playing time will be like either, but I’ll say this… Actually, I’ll write it.  There’s at least a 50% chance of Young taking over for Barmes at some point in the season.  Don’t ignore Young in keepers.

Sean Rodriguez – This be me, “He was a utility man coming into 2009 and I wouldn’t be surprised if he left 2010 back in that role.”  I said that about Zobrist, the guy standing in the way of Sean-Rod.  BTW, The Way of Sean-Rod, best Jarmusch movie in a while.

    Hey Grey,

Sorry for posting this again – I posted this on your previous post but here it is. I was offered Zimmerman, with a combo of either Dan Haren and Wandy/Garza or Josh Johnson and Wandy/Garza for Poo Holes. I am in need of some SPs and have youk and dunn to cover 1B. Do you think this is a good trade and which pitchers should I ask for? Thanks for your help!

  6. majortommy says:
    (link)

@Grey: What really killed me was when you went Sanchez, Sanchez, Sanchez(damn another sixer right there) back to back to back last column. Do me a favor and don’t do a third base list of players you would draft as you would no doubt list st*w@rt(I have to drive home at some point).

I love Beckham. Multi positions, 20-20(at least 15-15) potential and a better average than that Ian dude. But for some reason I love dudes with English names hello Clayton Kershaw and chicks with English teeth, hello Dakota Fanning!

@majortommy: whats the earliest in a 12 teamer you’d reach on beckham?

  8. Whiskey Richard says:

What’s too high for Beckham? In some of my mocks, I’m seeing him go in the 5th round. That’s crazy like George Romero, but even the 9th or 10th seems high for a guy two years removed from keggers at Sigma Alpha Nu.

  9. Grey

    Grey says:

@Whiskey Richard: 5th round is too early. 9th and 10th round are fine.

  10. Millsy says:

    (link)

@Millsy: I wouldn’t be worried about it yet.

  12. majortommy says:
    (link)

@Tony: Every pick is circumstantial. It would really depend. 9th or 10th does some kind of high but anywhere after the 11th round I wouldn’t feel as if I reached. But again it would depend on who was left, and who needed what.

I am actually targeting him in my keeper league with an early pick(7 keepers).
Red Herring? Who is chasing that stinky fish?

  13. Frank Rizzo says:

Sounds like Sizemore will not be batting at the top of the order per Leyland. Any word on where Beckham and Stewart will bat?

  14. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@Frank Rizzo: Stewart’s a prototypical 6 hole hitter, he’d be lucky to move to the 5 hole. Beckham’s either at the two hole or at the bottom, depending on him or Alexei.

  15. majortommy says:
    (link)

@Grey: If I end up with Alexei on any of my teams this year I will quit fantasy sports forever!

  16. CocoPoolies says:
    (link)

Grey, where are you drafting Beckham in a ten team that uses a MI spot?

  17. mc serch says:
    (link)

@Grey: Yeah, I see Beckham in the two hole in that order, which seems awfully right-handed heavy. Beckham, Quentin, Konerko, Rios, Jones, Alexei, all righties. With Pierre at the top and AJ prob at the bottom, it’s potentially a long run of righties with Teahan somewhere towards the bottom.

  18. mc serch says:
    (link)

@majortommy: A lot of people share that sentiment…saw him go in the 14th rd recently but most often in rounds 12-13. Thats good value for a 15/15 SS with 20/20 upside.

  19. majortommy says:
    (link)

@Grey: I do side bets with my buddy and am close to setting some now.
Over under on Longoria average .283 I would have to take .283 and under
Over under on Howard average .279 I would have to take .279 and over

How do you like the shake out on these. Keep in mind that I will blame you for losing money if you lead me astray.

  20. CocoPoolies says:

@Grey: Would you consider taking both Stewart and Beckham if the situation presented itself? Or is that simply too much risk if either, or both (::gasp::), bust?

@Grey: Early in the ninth for Beckham and 13th for Stewart sound about right?

How do you feel about Callaspo or Asdrubal? Are they going too high for u? I understand Callaspo in Roto not being being worth too much (Lack of power & speed) but Asdrubal has some speed value.
For me, in a points league, I was looking at them for a late round MI/back-up 2B spot. In my league, Callaspo finished 10th overall (because of his very low K rate) at 2B last year. While Asdrubal was 14th overall at 2B. I know last year doesn’t mean everything, but I would be pretty surprised if they did much worse and they are both young so I would think they would actually improve.

  25. Josh says:

No Prado love here? I like him more than Kelly Johnson. Plus, multi-position eligibility with a .300 BA means if someone else on your team flames out or gets injured, you’ve got a cushion on whom to pick up.

In a 8 team H2H Points, NL only auction keeper league, My keepers are Hanley, Kemp, Upton, Sandoval, Votto and Haren. I have 1 OF, 1 C, 1 2B, and 1 U position open I think I have the best keepers in my league, I will definitely be going after Ian Stewart.

My question is with Halladay and Holliday back in the pool, do you think it would be best to go after Halladay or Holliday or go after more midtier players, other best available players (Top 110 Razzball rankings) are Victorino, Nolasco, Soriano, Carpenter, Ibanez, Wandy, Billingsly, Pence, CarGo, Monetro, and Gallardo. Is there a better strategy to follow?

@Grey: I’m in a 10 team 3 keeper league that is moving up to 7 keepers for next season. My keepers right now are Pujols, Youk, & Kemp. It’s a fairly deep league with 5OF, 2UT, MI/CI, 5 SP 3 RP totaling 14 hitters and 8 pitchers + 5 bench. I’m trying to strategize for next year and beyond adding some keepers. Anyone you think I should target as keeper potential? I would definitely like to reach and grab an Ace early on around the 2nd or 3rd round(5th or 6th) then not sure. There should be plenty as only 30 guys are being kept. Looking at an MI player, who do you think that isn’t top 30 is a worthwhile look for a keeper? Thanks as always. Daiquiris will be coming your way shortly.

If I wait on 2b and plan on taking Stewart as either my 2b or MI, then wouldn’t either Asdrubal or Howie Kendrick be a good pairing with Ian? Preferably Asdrubal of course. I’m just thinking BA, R’s, and maybe a few SB’s to offset Stewart’s straight power numbers and weak BA.

@danimal35: I wouldn’t draft Tex and Fielder unless Fielder was in the third round. I’d take Holliday or someone else high at another position. This is a pretty insane team though.

@stanley: Not sure how much money you have left, but I’d take Halladay there. Then don’t take anymore pitchers until around Correia.

@timSTi: There’s a bunch of sleeper posts on the site or guys at the end of every ranking post that I single out as being good fliers. Fliers usually indicate upside guys that can outproduce their draft spot.

@Frank Rizzo: Asdrubal’s not bad with Stewart.

Outside of Utley, I feel like Robbie Cano is about as good a value as there is at 2nd base. i don’t particularly like the other 2b that are taken before him (Kinsler = DL, Phillips is good but i’m giving up 15 steals for a much better avg and lineup situation, B roberts = Decline, A Hill needs to show me he can have another good year before i draft him that early).

I’ve been looking to grab Cano around the 4-5th rounds and if i miss out on him, i’ve been punting to the asdribble or lower tiers. Maybe i’m too high on Cano, but outside of steals i feel like he is a huge upgrade over the avg 2B (though i have no data to support this). Something about a 2B that can hit 25+ Hrs (thanks to the little league home park), score 100 runs, and drive in 80+ with a 300 avg that keeps me coming back. essentially he puts up the same numbers as youk at a much more shallow position and is drafted a round or 2 after him.

We have 5 SP’s and 3 RP’s and there’s talks about what the limits should be to alleviate possible streaming of pitchers and hitters. I was thinking 175 per hitter position is a solid number and 900-1500 IP min & max. How do those numbers look?

I’m thinking of punting catcher and hope to grab Andrus + someone else in the SS/MI spot. I’m thinking maybe a Reimold type for my last OF or maybe I could get Span for cheap. I have no idea who to target as a CI but will probably spend some money on 3 or 4 solid pitchers and maybe 1 or 2 above-average closers. Ideas on where to spend? Strategies? I like B. Anderson and Nolasco but not sure how much they will cost. I think Anderson will be cheap in my league.

@ETMcGee: Agreed, I love Cano this year and have been snagging him in every draft in round 4. However, having usu. taken a 1B in round one and a 3B in round three, I am finding that the Cano selection is leaving me scrambling for speed. There is so much OF power in rounds 5-8 (Grandy, Werth, Cruz, Lind, C. Lee, Hamilton to name a few) I’m starting to think Ellsbury rather than Holliday (who I’ve often been grabbing in 2d round based on Grey/Rudy’s projections) may be the move in round 2. A first 4 of say Tex/Prince, Ellsbury, Zimmerman/Youk and Cano is a nice start, with a power pick or two to follow.

As a Padres fan, I love this talk about Beckham plus possibly Flowers AND Daniel Hudson, plus possibly another prospect, Jared Mitchell, all for Adrian Gonzalez. As much as I would like the Padres to keep AGonz, they would have to commit much more money than they’re likely to. That would be a haul, and in 1-3 years the Padres could be contenders again.

I don’t think the White Sox would be that short-sighted, though they seemed to prove me wrong late last year. I guess Peavy just really wants to get to the playoffs so he can blow it again. Masochist.

With the 11th pick in a 12-team H2H keeper league, should I target Kinsler and Tulo in the 1st and 2nd? I’m keeping Kendry, Sandoval, Choo, Wandy, and Hanson as it is. What happens if an elite 1B drops there?

I’ve been burned by Weeks 4 times. I kept him after his first half season. Then drafted him the next three seasons. This year finally someone else took him. Watch him break out. I kept Kearns once and drafted him twice too. I let his 2002 debut fool me. I used to be convinced that player XYZ will break out this year, and make sure to get him only to end up wasting that pick.

@Colonel: I’d go for Kinsler and Tulo there. You don’t need another 1st baseman.

@AL KOHOLIC: Team looks good. Average isn’t something I worry about in the preseason, but you’ll probably be hurting on average. Will depend on how much Youuuuk and Holliday can buoy you. Your pitching’s okay. Love the Oswalt pick there later on.

@papasmurf: Probably with your luck he will break out.

What about Jose Lopez? HR’s go up every year, turning 27, Ichiro and Chone batting in front of him. I’m in a league that counts K’s for hitters so Jose is above Uggla for me but am I crazy to go for him in round 9 of a 12 team?

@Quinn: No, I just don’t consider him a value pick. I have him ranked around 105. That’s in the 9th round.

    @Grey: Ah, I see, thanks.

Hey Grey, I have the 12th pick in a 5×5 league of 12 teams coming up and wanted to see what you think of picking Tulo & Kinsler for my 1st two picks. I figure a guy like Morneau would be around on the way back. Thanks in advance.
