Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

You know what would be really cool?  If you could join a free fantasy baseball league that was against, like, 600 other fantasy baseball teams.  But not a 600-person league, where people are trying to figure out who the back-up third baseman is on the Single-A Astros affiliate, Corpus Christi Amscrayers.  No, this is a 12-person league designed so you compete against eleven other people in your league, then 60 other leagues of twelve.  That would be cool.  Oh, wait, we’ve done that.  It’s called the Razzball Commenter Leagues, and they’re back, and you don’t even have to be a commenter to join it!  For a limited time only, get your loved one a fantasy baseball league!  That’s right, your hearts go pitter-patter or you’re dead on the inside (my condolences).  Since back in June when you abandoned your fantasy baseball team because it was totally sucking and you returned to your cubbyhole of leftover Chinese food and Teddy Grahams, you’ve longed for this day.  As Bob Marley sang, this is your redemption song, mon.  Or womon, for our four girl readers.  It’s time again to join some fantasy baseball leagues.  Before you close all of your extraneous porn windows and rush to sign up, let’s explain how these fantasy baseball leagues are going to work.  We’re going to have a bunch of leagues and crown a winner from each, then we’re going to crown ONE winner from all of the winners.   We will be crowning the winner by taking each team’s points and multiplying it against a ‘league competitiveness factor.’  If you want to see how it worked last year, go here.  So we’re going to fill up as many fantasy leagues as we can for the next seven weeks.  Each fantasy baseball league will be a mixed league, 12 team, snake draft, roto, 5×5, 5 OFs, one Middle Infielder, one Corner Infielder, one Utility, 9 pitchers, 20 game eligibility, 180 Games Started max, 1000 IP minimum.  Unlike previous years, we will be going with TWO DL SLOTS.  The only things you need to change from the default is the 180 Games Started and the TWO DL SLOTS.  Please be vigilant about having the exact same league rules and setup as everyone else.  The lineup is also known as:  C/1B/2B/SS/3B/CI/MI/5 OF/UTIL/9 P/3 BENCH/2 DL with 180 Games Started and 1000 IP minimum.  The fantasy leagues will be played in ESPN and they will be free to join.

We’re going to start with twenty-five leagues of 12 and see how we do from there.  To join a league… Sorry, again for the people in the back of the room:

TO JOIN A LEAGUE
Click the LINK in the ‘League Link’ column (see below grid) and enter the PASSWORD at ESPN.  Emails are there for some leagues, but you shouldn’t need to email anyone.

TO START A LEAGUE
Please create a league in ESPN based on the league rules reference above.  Step by step:  Hit Create.  Then Create ESPN Custom (middle option), Name League, Change to 12 Teams, Restriction Type: None, Open to All Users, Access: change to Private, create Password, leave as Roto and Snake, Make Draft Date and Time, Create.  From Default settings all you have to do is change to TWO DL SLOTS and 180 Starts by pitchers.  So, you go to ROSTERS and Click “Edit Roster Settings.”  There, change to 2 DL Slots and 180 Starts (the counter will change to 20.0 per slot).  Then SUBMIT Roster Settings.  Finally, Create Your League!  (Important Note: Make sure league is viewable to public but requiring a password to avoid non-Razzballers joining.)   When that’s finished, click here. You will be permissioned shortly so you can add your league info to the Google Doc (the below grid cannot be edited from this page).  On that Google Doc, you will need to enter your name, league link, password and please UPDATE the number of openings as your league fills up.   That’s it.  Oh, and don’t use your bank account password.

THE BIG PRIZE

I know, you can hardly wait.  This year’s winner will receive a walk-on part in the next Scorsese movie.  That’s if the winner happens to be Robert De Niro.  If the winner is not Robert De Niro, then the winner will receive a brand new hoodie.  Not just any hoodie, but one that tells the world, “I only care about fantasy sports.  No, I don’t even care about deodorant.”  A hoodie so spectacular it forced me to look up the proper spelling of spectacular just so I could describe it.  A hoodie that makes men want to be your friend and women want to sleep with you.  Or vice versa if you’re one of our four female readers.  This hoodie is one-of-a-kind (except for the same hoodie we’ve given away to our football and basketball league winners).  A hoodie that Snoop Dogg would be proud to rock.  And that man has forgotten more about hoodies than you’ll ever know!  Wear it to weddings, funerals or into the shower and tell people you are the 2014 Razzball Commenter League Champion.  Okay, now sign up…

Sadly this’ll be the first time I don’t do an RCL, but for those thinking of going for it, do it! Hands down one of the toughest leagues you’ll play in, which in turn makes it one of the most rewarding to win. It’s always interesting to see how drafts turn out when everyone is drawing from the same pool of information.

That said, I have three spots in a 12-team roto auction $20 buy in in Yahoo. This is the last time I’m posting this (I hate hijacking razzball threads). Eddy5791[at]yahoo.com is the email if you’re interested

All other RCL’ers, best of luck.

Play in a NL only H2H Weekly Scoring Points League
Scoring for Batting – TB, Avg (24pts if hit 576-600 for week, 22pts – 551-575, etc.) Runs, RBI, SB (2pts), CS (-1), BB
    Scoring for Pitching – Wins (10pts), Losses (-3), QS (4pts), K’s, ERA (.000-.499 – 24pts, .500-.999 – 22pts, etc.), Saves (8pts), Shutouts (8pts), Holds (3pts)

Would you trade my Rosenthal @ $13 for this year & up to $23 for 3 years after that For any 2 of the following: Brown @ $14 for 3 years, Belt @ $12 for 2 years, Yelich @ $11 for 3 years?

Long time listener/commenter, first time RCL player. Grey, I am playing in a RCL league this year! Yay! Anyway, I have typically played in Yahoo! 5×5 10-team rotisserie leagues with only 3OF, no MI, and No CI position. Further, the pitching is different than what I am used to as I have typically played in 1250 inning cap leagues with the same stat categories as RCL. In my years of fantasy sports experience, I have noted drastic strategy differences based on various rule types. Based on what type of league I have typically played in, do you have any notes of strategy differences with pitching and the extra offensive slots. If you have previously written something up about this, a link to that article would be great. Thanks for any insight you can offer. To the commentors in my league, just ignore this post and any response by Grey :) I am asking for a friend, yeah a friend…..

How do Myers and Hosmer stack up as keepers? Currently sitting on Harper and McCutch and was offered Hosmer for Myers and a mid rd pick…

    • James says:
      (link)

      @Justin Cook:

not sure if you want to keep 3 OF (unless it is at least a 5 OF league).

Hosmer- He looks like Joey votto. Then again, he is young and the power is not there yet. IF everything breaks right he is a .300-320 hitter with 30 home run power, and low double digit speed. IF things do not break right he is what he is, a .290/20h/10steals type player. All of that from a thinning 1b. He was also a blue chip prospect coming up, so there is definately the raw skills to be elite.

Myers- He got a lot of hype last year as a really high floor guy, but does not have any speed. The solid BA is real (i think .270-290 range, where he helps but not much), but the power is real. THis kid will hit 30-40 a year. REalisitically I see Jay Bruce here. The floor really is Jay Bruce, but there is a possibility of more.

So would you do Votto for Bruce and a pick?

  26. Robby D says:

Life is good with ESPN open finally and my keeper league reactivated by the Commish (who ironically happens to be Michael Chiklis)

It’s a H2H 10 team 6 keeper league 7×7 with QS, Losses and OBP, XBH as the extra stats.

I’ve posted a lot about it, but I got the potential to upgrade via trade big time:

Got a friend who is interested in Zobrist as one of his six keepers, and he’s currently not keeping Hamilton, Hosmer or Cargomez (his team is pretty stacked with Trout and some others)

I’m currently keeping Cargo (rockies), Tulo, Stanton, Craig, Cespedes, Bruce. If I can swing a trade for Zobrist, which would you pick from the list:

    Hosmer
    Hamilton
    Cargomez

I like Hosmer or Cargo, but I already have 4 OF, although whoever I get here is going to replace one of them (probably Cespedes)

    Thanks for the info.

    • Robby D says:
      (link)

@Robby D: Also, he has already made it clear that he would need some draft pick compensation for Cargo, but would do Hosmer straight up probably.

Gonna sign up for an RCL for the first time. I’m not familiar with how roto works. In a 12 team league, I either get 1-12 points depending on where I’m ranked on a weekly basis for where I rank in a category. Is that ranking where I rank that week or for the entire season?

Also, If I’m doing the calculation right, we only get around 7 starts per week?

And last question I think, are your rankings for head to head or roto?

    Thanks :D

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Roto… H2H rankings will be along shortly… RCL is for the whole season…

      • Zar says:
        (link)

@Grey: Sorry, I meant to ask. Week 1, I get points per category based on where I’m ranked from my week 1 stats. Then, in week 2, I get points per category based on where I’m ranked from my week 2 stats, not my total season stats.

My league rank is then based off my total points. Is this correct?

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

For what league? RCL league? No, it’s based on standings at the end of the year…

          • Zar says:
            (link)

@Grey: The RCL is calculated based off standings for the year.

In a single roto style league, not associated with anything else but that league, how does roto work? Lets say in week 1, I get 10 Home Runs, good for 1st that week. Then in week 2 get another 10, which is good for only 4th in week 2.

Do I get 1st place points for week 1, then 4th place points for week 2? Or are my week 2 points going to include the 10 home runs I got in week 1? Are my week 13 rankings going to include week 1-12 stats or just my week 13 stats?

I’m just unfamiliar with how roto scoring works in general

            • Grey

              Grey says:
              (link)

Roto is on the season, not a week…

                  (link)

@Zar: Zar, what you thought Roto was, is in fact called H2H roto hybrid. basically it would be each week is a roto season. Normal roto is one really long season (just like real life). I’ve never actually seen roto/H2h hybrids in existence, only read about them. I think they would be the best type of league, since even if your team sucked in steals for 17 weeks it could still win steals in week 18 and after. People would still get the weekly sunday night thrills and chills like H2H (and fantasy football’s immediacy) but the true statistical value of roto (no scheduling luck in roto, unlike normal H2H)

And I’m finally back. Now that my leagues have started up, I finally have some keeper questions. First, I’d like to point out my keepers in a 16 team league:

Goldy, Tulo, Jones, Stanton, JUp. How sick is that? I have no clue how I pulled that off, but if they hold up health-wise, I should be sitting pretty.

Anyway, in my shallow league we made some changes and looks like we’re adding in an IF position, a 4th OF, an extra P, and some bench spots, just to clear out some of the FA pool (it’s an 8 team league). We keep 5, with one of them being a “franchise” that we keep forever and the other four are only kept for two years.

    Here are my options:

Chris Davis, Fielder, Jones, Longoria, Hanley, Tulo, Scherzer

I think Jones is my franchise, but unsure about the others.

Stats: H, R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, OB+SLUG, W, QS, SV, KS, KS/9, ERA, WHIP

Thanks you, sir, and it’s good to be back!

@Grey: no kidding! I’ve kind of been in hiding since the end of football and now it’s time to get back into the swing of things.

The 16 team league is insane. It’s a keep forever league, too.

In that 8 team, you like Hanley over Tulo? I haven’t really been keeping up with the blog lately…I know, I know. I’m a failure. So just wondering your stance there.

@Grey: Definitely will do. Neither one of those guys is the epitome of health. Do we know if Hanley maintained his SS eligibility. That will help with that decision.

  32. Robby D says:

    Let me boil this down:

Zobrist for Hosmer straight up or

Zobrist for Cargomez if I have to give like 4 rounds difference in supplemental picks

Have to keep 6 and keeping these:

Tulo, Cargo, Bruce, Stanton, Craig, Cespedes.

This trade would replace Cespedes because I could pick him up later.

        @Grey:
Ok, he wants my 10th round for the 14th round and it’s 10 team, so it only works out to 30ish picks but that would be the 96th or 97th overall pick, so Cargo is clearly worth more than that.

        THanks.

    Sweet, win-win

My trade partner was willing to do Zobrist and Craig (my guys) for Cargomez and Hosmer (his guys) without trade picks difference.because another guy in my league wants Craig for Ian Desmond and is willing to kick in picks. I don’t need Desmond though because I have Tulo, so yay me I guess.

I have the third pick this season..Head to head scoring.

Our league is basically a 9×9 (9 offense and 9 pitching categories)

Every stat category is worth the same, so if you hit more homeruns than your opponent you get the 1 point for that category.

Pitching is a minimum 30 innings each week with no limits.

Would you still avoid Kershaw under these settings? Some weeks I can get half my pitching stats just from him.

    Hope this makes sense.

    • Grey

This really belongs in your Pairings post, but alas, I’m late to the party…

What’s a guy to do when I own 3 SP in the “Patty Cake” tier (Kershaw, Scherzer, Bum) plus Greinke and Chapman? For the record of those 5 players only one was owned in the season previous (Greinke).

Being a longtime Fantasy Baseballer (Grey’s moms term!) I feel the need to defend myself for this predicament. It’s mainly because my offense was ridiculously good (still won 4 of 5 cats at season’s end last year) and my pitching was pathetic so I was able to make some deals that improved the shituation without making huge cuts at my offense. Here are the deals that landed me here:

In April I moved Billy H. for Chapman – I new Billy wasn’t going to play so I moved him to a team that was already in rebuilding mode for a guy that could help me in 2013.

In June I moved Machado for Kershaw + a Draft Pick – score!

And at the deadline in August I moved Fielder for Scherzer and Bumgarner – In this case Fielder wasn’t yet a Ranger, he looked lethargic and I also have Goldy at 1B. I wish I still had Fielder, but I don’t regret the move.

Sparing all the gritty details, these moves netted me a slow incline from 5th to 1st on the second to last day of the season, only to be edged for the title on the last day. One more week with this staff would have secured the title. *sigh*

Anyway, now I need to move these guys and get some hitters. The good news is I’m still well positioned with the bat, just not enough of them (other keepers: Goldschmidt, Cano, Tulo, Choo and Marte) and we keep 8. I’ve been targeting Puig, and was very close on a Kershaw for McCutchen deal… but it fizzled.

It was a long road, but here are my questions (finally):
    1. With very little traction coming from my trade inquiries, how short should I sell these guys to get hitters?
    2. Would keeping 3 SP be as horrible as it sounds? I don’t want to do it, but I don’t want to trade Kershaw for Rizzo either….

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Don’t draft any more starters, that’s for sure… Depends what you can sell them for… 2. It’s not great, but could be worse…

    hey grey quick question,

I have the first pick in my draft after 12 teams each keep 8 players. You had previously suggested I draft a SS and the best one available is Andrus. The question I have is even though Rios is available, should I go with Andrus over him? The reason I ask is because my outfield is already Stanton Jones and Gordon. Is it worth drafting rios to be one of my utility players instead of filling my SS?

Thanks for the help and sorry if that was confusing the way I worded it

    16 Team Roto – 25 roster spots – 15 player MiLB Draft – 6×6 (OBP + Holds) –
    Starting Cats: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, 3OF, UTIL, 4SP, 4RP, 2P

I am surprised to see teams already choosing set-up men with good ratios (as soon as Rd 14-16) who will get holds and possibly even some save opportunities. Should I be going after them right now if my starting offense is complete and SPs are a tossup? Or should I load up on a few more solid offensive players for my bench and fill out my required SPs with best available before targetting holds’ RPs? Aren’t setup men with good ratios and holds easy to find via the waivers during the season, even in a league this deep? Based on your rankings there are still hitters and a few older SPs available who rank ahead of the setup men (most of which aren’t good enough to make your list).

in RCL leagues, how many days after a guy is dropped is he waiverable? 1 or more? i’ve seen up to three in leagues before. Was 180 games started the same as last year, if so, no wonder everybody’s streaming non-starters, since 180 starts isn’t that many over a season. Also explains how many borderline starts you tell people not to use, since in roto every inning is worth the same at end of the year, unlike H2H. I hope somebody can’t exploit the good RP’s by picking up like 20 of them before games start and drop them so others can’t use them that day (i’m not that familiar with espn rules about this). Also, just what are the duties of a comish in these leagues? Nixing collusions? Sorry about all of the rudimentary questions, but pretty much yahoo only (or fantrax) guy in baseball to this point.

@Grey: is there a stop gap in place in espn wherein if i pickup a guy today (in season) but drop him before any games start that makes sure he’s still pickupable today by somebody else for today’s games? Also i’m guessing there are no innings limits, only the 180 starts one.

@SteveNZ: thanks, in yahoo to even see the rules for each league (the particulars) you have to actually accept the invite first (or set up league yourself). buying the ticket and taking the ride is simultaneous there. It’s nice to be able to see this stuff first.

So I offered Waino for Harper to a guy who literally has no other guys on his team worth keeping (it was his first year). We rolling with 5-7 keepers. He wants me to sweeten the deal since I have almost 10 guys who would be acceptable keepers. Here they are:
5×5 ROTO NL only 2 Catcher League, NO RUNS SCORED with BB instead.

    Here’s my “for sures”:

    Jeddy Gyorko 1$
    Waino 11$
    Jo-Fer 19$
    Aroldis 3$
    Wacha 10$

    I also have:
    Posey 22$
    Mike Minor 12$
    Samardizja 1$
    Carpenter 9$
    D Murphy 9$
    Kershaw 41$

Does Waino + Posey for harper (10$) make sense? I dont think ill be keeping Posey, but in a two catcher league he will probably go for more than 22 so I want to throw him back. This is what he wanted but I told him too much. I countered with Waino + D Murphy, he didnt bite. What about Waino+ Carpenter? I think I’d be more inclined to keep Carp if we counted runs scored. This or is it time to move on because he wants too much…

PS Ive won this league two years in a row so thanks for the good advice! Here’s to starting this one off on a good note.

Also keeping F-Her. If i’m 4th overall would trout actually move behind cano and/or goldy due to me already having 3 of my starting 4 OF’ers or would best player in that scenario still be trout?
