Hehe, I said tool.  Our 2014 Fantasy Baseball War Room is one part draft tool, one part fantasy team evaluator, one part fantasy junkie’s s’s and g’s tool, one part holy, two parts smokes, three parts…  How many parts is that so far? Cause it’s only really seven parts total.  I think there’s one part kill-your-day-with-this-war-room-thing-a-maboob in there too.  I don’t know, guys and four girls, I think it’s pretty cool and I only get excited about things once every three full moons or once every time I see the t-shirt with three moons and a wolf.  For reals, it might be the best thing since sliced bread.  Now sliced bread that is toasted and buttered is another story entirely.  This shizz is so insane, I just had an aneurysm.  Are you happy now?!

If you’re unfamiliar with our Fantasy Baseball War Room, it’s a draft tool to help you track where you are at any moment in a draft.  It shows you if you have too many steals, homers… Or if your ERA or WHIP are too low.  Or if your lamb is still rare or should be turned (results vary on lamb).  If you’ve already drafted a team, go into the War Room, enter your team and it shows you exactly how stacked/dreadful the team is. If you’re in the middle of a draft, you can filter which guys are left that have the most home runs according to my projections.  Or the most steals, or the most runs or the most whatever (only applicable if “Whatever” is a category in your league).  If you’re in a bind, go into a Warm Room and take a shvitz.  Ah…That’s better!  There might be some bugs in our Fantasy Baseball War Room, just comment here and we’ll look into fixes. The default projections are mine from the 2014 fantasy baseball rankings.  Step by step:

  • Sign up. (Dur.)
  • Choose what kind of team you want to draft. How many catchers, outfielders, middle infielders, etc.  ESPN and Yahoo are for position eligibility.  It doesn’t mean you’re playing there. ESPN is 20 games started; Yahoo is 5 started and 10 games played. So that means ESPN and CBS are the same.  Or wherever you play that uses 20 or 10 game eligibility is accounted for. Please don’t ask if we can add CBS.
  • Now as you draft players, click Draft next to their name. If someone else takes them, then X them out. If a player is eligible at more than one position, drop down the menu to the position you want them at. If you can’t find a player, search for them at the top.  As Jeff Francoeur would say, voila!  Or if you’re a Twins fan, Frank Voila!
  • Get as close to the Totals as you can.
  • Wanna start again?  Delete the Team, by scrolling to the right of the player search at the top and a down arrow will appear.  Click that, then click the pinwheel under ‘Taken” and delete team or sign out.  We got pinwheels!  Wanna throw your computer out the window from excitement?  Go for it!  Oh, and don’t lose your password after you sign up, I have no idea how to retrieve it.  Yippee!

Has value but incomplete. For example, 9 pitching spots offered. For someone like me who carries fewer SP and more MR to stream, there are several players I intend to draft that are not available because you haven’t included them in your projections. Didn’t even cover all my targeted hitters.
Ultimately, can’t get full value for a team to compare to your targets.
Is there functionality to add extra players with projections, say from Steamer?
Has potential, but needs a little extra work.

Interesting take. But it’s a draft tool, right? I guess I’m trying to picture a tool that helps you draft your streaming SP. those two things don’t really go together, IMHO.

Understand what you’re saying about available players. From experience of using it last year, it isn’t necessarily a mock draft tool for everyone and every league since they’re homegrown projections and reflect the guys he’s ranked and projected for.

@Sky: hey, was just a first, late night look. may be part getting up to speed. second thoughts were i could just limit model team to 12 hitters, 3SP, 3RP, to eliminate missing players and MRs from the equation. seems like that would work. however, it appears that even though the setup allows to form the league in this manner, the goals don’t appear to change. not trying to be a trouble maker. just want it to be all it can be. again, not to offend whoever is the engineer,,,is that you, Sky?

@Sky: agree with you on difficulty of evaluating streaming. in my own spreadsheets i’ve begun to tackle the issue by adding a line for streamers, with ‘realistic’ stats that i would expect from them. then just add/delete sp,rp,streamers to see the impact measured against targets. it gives me a pretty good picture of the impact of drafting a frontline sp vs. a frontline rp (impacts on overall K’s, era, etc.). Of course, i am doing similar on hitter side. ultimately trying to get a balance of getting a similar percentage to targets for hitters and pitchers. i feel good about what i am seeing.

AND, i am weighing Rudy’s hitter/pitcher percentage stuff, et al…

Re: discourse. I was pretty sure you wouldn’t be offended. just trying to keep folks who may not have your experience from going off the deep end.

With it being full swing for Rudy and Grey, I don’t know how much time they’d have to rededicate to the project. If it’s something I could help with and was feasible and wasn’t a monetary issue, I’d put my hat in the ring to hlep if an improvement could be made.

@Grey: Eh, the adding players thing (Steamer) not that critical. Tough to put all that expense into it and then have it not fully work, just in terms of being able to complete a draft and not have it break down. If you get a little ‘free’ re-tooling commitment, I am happy to help check out the system.

@Grey: There’s a gap between your concept of ‘working’ and mine. When one can create leagues with different numbers of players, yet the target goals remain unchanged, I don’t see the value in the targets–one of the mainstays of the program. Not going to lose sleep over it myself. Would be interesting to get a poll of numbers of readers who commit to it. A way of seeing if the investment is paying off. (I see from comments below that some had failure with it for other reasons.)

Hidashi my dashi slurp slurp out for 4 to 6 weeks – depending on his recovery he may miss the first month of the season.

How does this affect his draft status?

Also – should I move AJ Burnett further down the rankings due to him pitching half his games at citizens park in front of an OAP infield defense?

    • bossmanjunior says:
      (link)

      @gareth:

Grey already moved Iwakuma down in his rankings.

I wouldn’t be too concerned about Burnett. He had the highest gb% in the NL so park effects have less of an umm..effect.

      • Jonas says:
        (link)

        @bossmanjunior: Bossman Junior, ha.

      • Homer at the Bat says:
        (link)

@bossmanjunior: It’s not park effects that’ll hamper Burnett’s results with his high ground ball percentage… it’s the Phillies’ defense (outside of Utley). With Pittsburgh’s good defense, batters hit around .200(ish) on ground balls from Burnett. When Burnett had the Yankees’ crap defense behind him, batter hit closer to .270 on Burnett’s (ground) balls. That could be a lot of extra hits – and runs – over the season, bumping up his ratios.

Then again, if you’re willing to rely on Burnett, (1) you’ve either recently emerged from a coma (welcome back!), (2) you’ve already lost your league (want to join my money/keeper league?), or (3) you’re Burnett’s mom. (Hi again!)

    • de nachos says:

As you know, E5 had surgery late last season to clean out some cartilage in his wrist. It seems like no big deal because the only site I’ve seen that even mentions the surgery is CBS. However, CBS warns that he could struggle with power early on and therefore…blah blah blah. I don’t give CBS player notes a lot of stock but do you think there is any reason to be concerned in the slightest with that kind of procedure?

12 team keeper league, H2H. We keep 10 each year.

Been offered a huge trade which I am thinking of turning down, but would appreciate another opinion.

    I give MCab & Kershaw.
I get Cano, Wil Myers, Choo, Moore, Cain.

I have Gyorko as a potential keeper, so I think that giving up MCab to get Cano doesn’t fill a need (and also leaves me with a hole at 3B).

Basically, without the trade, my keepers are MCab, Kershaw, Gyorko, Bautista, Belt, Werth, Gray, Turner, Perez & Beachy.
With the trade, my keepers are Cano, Choo, Myers, Cain, Moore, Gyorko, Bautista, Belt, Gray and one of Werth/Turner/Perez/Beachy.

    Appreciate comments, thanks!

I’m keeping Adam jones for $13 and Segura for $1. Those were easy. Trying to pick the other three.

    Prince $54
    Stanton $30
    Wright $29
    Heyward $4
    Choo $6

            (link)

@SteveNZ: Yea, took over the reigns just this season from PaulieAllNuts. I think we’re gonna be looking to fill a couple spots too, so I’ve been eyeing over who’s in which leagues. I don’t want to poach managers if I can help it. Original Recipe and Cracking the WHIP are two leagues with some pretty solid managers. Is Royce! in OR? He’s another real good manager I’ve got my eye on for an ECFBL spot.

            • SteveNZ says:
              (link)

@MattTruss223: Yeah, at the risk of blowing smoke up his ass, royce! is a real good manager. Though I think he’s cutting back his FBB involvement a bit this year – he ummed and ahhed a little before committing to Original Recipe this time round.

We’re delighted to have him back, of course.

              • MattTruss223 says:
                (link)

@SteveNZ: Seems to be a trend this year, I see a lot of good managers cutting back. Hence us having a couple spots to fill.

            • royce! says:
              (link)

@MattTruss223: I thought I was a good manager until last year. Had to fight tooth and nail to eke out 5th place. But I appreciate Steve’s vote of confidence and hope to make him proud this year!

              • MattTruss223 says:
                (link)

@royce!: Hey, even good managers have bad seasons now and then, the point is fighting tooth and nail until the bitter end for that 5th place finish. ECFBL kicked my hiney last year. 8th place and I drafted Miggy and Goldy. One 5th place finish does not a bad manager make!

                • J-FOH says:
                  (link)

@MattTruss223: Oh damn, that’s rough considering you got those two. what happened to the rest of your team?

Grey said peeps can be in multiple leagues. I don’t think it would be poaching to get others from other leagues….does that sound right?

                  • MattTruss223 says:
                    (link)

@J-FOH: I got BJ’d, my streaming wasn’t great, and I generally got outplayed. It’s pretty key in that league I learned to make sure you have a full roster daily. Fred posted on this matter in the forums I believe. The winner of the league had a pretty substantial higher number of ABs then the rest of us, leading to higher counting stats, etc. We’re all pretty compulsive add/droppers and I thought I was keeping up OK, but the final month+ of the season proved otherwise. The chronic add/dropping led to things like me holding Jose Fernandez for 2-3 rough starts and missing out on his BEAUTFUL 2nd half. That would’ve helped. Several factors. ECFBL is humbling to say the least!

                    • J-FOH says:
                      (link)

@MattTruss223: yeah it’s tough to keep pace when you have a whole league of frequent rosterbaters. It’s tough when they force you to play their way but it’s a style of play. Thats why the NFBC is so tough with the no transactions thing. I too was a JoFer dropper in some league after the tough early outings. I got so desperate last year that I streamed MR last year for saves and K’s the last 2 months of the year.

In our FCL, which is some of the newer frequent commenters/high finnishers we got Magoo, Pandas, Oaktown, kid A, and some others that seem like they know what’s up. Feel free to hit one of them up if you guys need to fill a spot. They might be down to do more than one league. I’ll even post it on the league message board.

                  • MattTruss223 says:
                    (link)

@J-FOH: And no, I didn’t just mean being in multiple leagues as poaching, but I’m eyeing top managers, most of which are already in top leagues, and deeply entrenched there. Like Royce for instance, I wouldn’t want to go stealing him from Original Recipe. If someone felt they could handle two super competitive leagues, that’d be their call, but I don’t want to assume anything.

                    • J-FOH says:

@MattTruss223: I’m in FCL, Champions and the writers league, I’m sweating my balls off in worry right about now….plus writing two columns a week….and prepping for football….and writing football articles once that starts in August…..I hate myself yet I love this shizz

                      (link)

@MattTruss223: Yea man, I saw you posting about wanting to play in ECFBL last year in the comments. I was gonna hit you up, but then you went J-Superstar on us and started writing for the site, figured you’d have your plate full with those commitments. The offer was gonna be there though. Already asked Oaktown, he’s honestly the manager I wanted in most of all. Love that guy, in a totally hetero way. I always peruse for his comments and enjoy his insight very much. Professor Oaktown as you proclaimed him, dude’s great. He turned me down though, spread too thin. Nice work snagging him.

Magoo is pretty entrenched in his league I felt too.

Pandas is also in Cracking the WHIP I believe which was ECFBLs stiffest competition for league CI.

But yea, feel free to make a post. Wake Up just hit me up, that’d be sweet, he’s another great manager and good dude, hopefully he gets in there.

    Grey,
I was reading through your SP ranking posts earlier and you made a reference to “Sorry doesn’t butter the biscuit; sorry doesn’t walk the dog.” I’ve been racking my brain to try to remember where that line comes from–I remember it being possibly from a radio commercial in the 80s, where a dad says the line to his son–is that right? What was the commercial for? It’s killing me trying to remember this.
And which would you keep in a 5×5 roto league–buttering the biscuit or walking the dog? The biscuit has better upside but the dog provides more faithful production.

    • Grey

@Grey: I’m thinking it might be a Philly-area radio commercial. When I do a Google search for the two phrases together the few people who use it seem to be from the Philly area (when you can tell where they’re from), and the college friend of mine who also liked to quote the ad was also from the Philadelphia area (like myself).

Loving the war room! Will be making a donation to Razzball sooner than later. Gotta get my taxes back first though.

So Grey, got a keeper question for you that Jay and Nick already weighed in on yesterday. Curious what your thoughts are, since you are more pro-Stanton than them.

In a keeper league where you keep 6 players every year, no round drafted or monetary value is associated with the players, and you can keep them FOREVER…would you trade Stanton for either Ryan Braun, Edwin Encarnacion or Votto?

I don’t have a keeper 3B and my keeper 1B is Rizzo, who I could still keep and slide into my util spot if needed.

I have a hard time trading a young guy like Stanton with heaps of potential for an aging slugger who is probably just past their prime but still really good. But Stanton’s injuries are starting to annoy me and I’m not so sure he gets traded to a better team any time soon.

Plus I have Bryce Harper as another keeper and per your hitter pairings, I should couple Harper with a safer pick (someone that hopefully won’t get hurt).

I did the deal for Harper, and I’m stoked. He is in the last year of his keeper eligibility but I could sign him.

Right now he is 10$, if I take this “option year” he is a free agent no matter what at the end of the season. I can also sign him to a contract for 5$ per year after the option year. Example if I want him for two years, his salary goes up to 15 for those two season; for 3 years, his salary is up to 20 for all three years….and so on.

Would you take him this year only for 10$ to have more money in the draft or sign him for two years with a 15 dollar salary for both seasons?

    Thanks as always Grey.

I don’t think Cruz plays a good Centerfield…that said, nice uptick for Ackley ABs. Still has 2B eligibility too. Cruz and the remaining FAs need to have a lowered expectations moment without major injuries to give them a shot.

      • gareth says:
        (link)

Agreed about ackley. He wasn’t on my radar but with 2b/of eligibility he might be a nice bench piece for depth.

Yeah, was meaning to be joking/flippant about the Cruz thing. They have too many DH-types already. I have a hard time seeing him being signed by them. I’m surprised Hart/LoMo would get much of any time in the OF but there’s really no choice but to. If LoMo plays more than 100 games, I’ll be surprised. I’m guessing some young guy gets a shot. Almonte maybe?

@goodfold2: I’m pretty sure Erasmo had things wrapped up for being a starter without Iwakuma going down. I assume you’re talking Ervin? I have a hard time believing with all the arms the Mariners have they’ll be signing Ervin. Then again, they just spent a bunch of a closer they didn’t need so I wouldn’t put it past them.

People say the indians rotation is in bad shape due to the loss of kazmir and jiminez. Its actually in a better spot now than it was this time last year.

Masterson and jiminez were coming off awful seasons, they signed Brett Myers for 7 million to be a mid rotation innings eater. Scott kazmir was a long shot after being picked up from independant ball playing for the sugarland sleepers. Zach McAllister was a mid rotation starter. Corey kluber and Danny Salazar were in the minor leagues and were not considered for the opening day roster.

2013 – masterson, jiminez, myers, McAllister, kazmir.

Shoot forward to 2014 and masterson is coming off a stellar season. Danny Salazar has emerged as a possible ace in the making. Corey kluber is a solid number 3 and has a little cult following among baseball writers and fans. Zach McAllister is a boring, steady number 4. The fifth spot is a competition between a solid veteran coming off an injury (Marcum), 2 former top prospects with upside (Bauer, carrasco) and control artist coming off tommy john (Tomlin). They still have time to re-sign jiminez or grab a depth starter such as Capuano if thry so choose.

2014 – masterson, Salazar, kluber, McAllister, carrasco.

The thing that gives me encouragement about the indians is they now have 3′viable fantasy starters, where as last year they had none. It makes me happy every time someone drools over Salazar, or calls masterson or kluber “sneaky good” (there’s currently a nice article on fangraphs about masterson).

I know this isn’t an indians blog so sorry for the homerism, but I do have a general question for commenters – do you feel better about your favorite team when you see a ton of the players as viable fantasy options? Also – how do feel about drafting players who play for the team you follow? Does if affect your experience?

    • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
      (link)

@gareth: it does feel good to be able to get players for fantasy that you are already fans of in real life due to homerism or local city or whatnot. But if you are playing in a league full of other fans of this city it makes it near impossible to get any of those players at good value. I’ll never be able to get adams/carpenter/craig/holliday/waino (or beltran/berkman last few years, pujols before) at decent rates in my local leagues, not ever.

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

@J-FOH: MDC’s ADP for Pujols is mid-30′s so the extremes for Pujols look like here (high) and espn (low) while the public evens him right into the middle of the two so far, currently 34th.

        • J-FOH says:
          (link)

@goodfold2: In a 12 team snake getting him early in the 3rd or even late second is not a bad thing. Not many have that kind of ceiling and he’s the kind of gamble that can win you your league with the right pairing. Freeman might be the safer pick but Pujols has much higher HR potential.

@Nuke LaDouche: Cutch, Votto, Segura, Machado, Rizzo,

Are the goals what it would take to win a category or to finish in say 4th place in a category
Is there a way to reset the league settings so that you can use it for more than one league?
My experience is that after I deleted a team it maintained the same league settings the next time i logged on. This sort of limits its usablity if you play in leagues with different settings.

Let me start off my saying something positive! I love the site. Razzball is my first stop for fantasy sports, I enjoy the humor and the insights. You folks do good work and should be thanked for it. So, thank you.

That said… I’ve been looking forward to this years online WarRoom, after not having any success in using last years in my drafts. I realize it is early days with this version, but I’m having a lot of the same problems. Long refresh times after marking a player as taken, a page crash every now and again, and a few times after drafting a player they’d show up on my list of drafted players but not be removed from the list of available players. All these happening with Chrome and Firefox about equally.

The big one is the long refresh for taken players. Most of the drafts I run give a minute or so between picks, and when the page doesn’t refresh it’s just so easy to fall behind.
Just my two cents. Keep up the good work!

    Team B: Runs 92%, HR 94%, RBI 97%, SB 76%

Thanks. I had a question too. It looks like Matt Moore’s projected stats, particularly ERA and WHIP are substantially worse than the pitchers ranked below him. I use your projected stats for my own ranking model which ranks players comparatively by position, and it ranks him at 64 among pitchers. The 20 pitchers ranked below him average 199/3.44/1.18/13/180, while he is projected for 197/3.69/1.29/12/187. What gives?

Quick question: will you have a downloadable spreadsheet version (like the past few years) coming out in the future? I ask because we have a long-standing auction dynasty league where the aforementioned spreadsheet has really come in handy to determine remaining funds, keep track of player salaries, etc. Thanks!
