Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Here’s a post that’s gonna make you wanna slap ya mama and call her Mark.  The other day I told you how to draft your pitchers for 2013 fantasy baseball.  I laid it out to you nice and simple (if you have a degree in “What The Hell Is Grey Talking About?”  Not a PhD, mind you.  Just a BS.)  Today, we forget all that jabberwocky on the who-ha and get down to business old school-style (which means if you don’t comprehend, I will hit you over the head with a baseball bat signed by Joe Clark.)  What I’m hoping to lay out to you is who do you draft 2nd if you’ve drafted so and so first.  I think it might be helpful to go through pairings for your 5 outfielders, all your middle and corner infielders too.  I’m not sure I’ll have the time or patience to do them though.   We’ll see!  Or not.  Your choice.  (Actually, my choice.)  For easy reference, the royal we will be using the top 10 2013 fantasy baseball rankings, the top 20 2013 fantasy baseball rankings and the beginning of the top 100 for 2013 fantasy baseball.  I’m going to assume you’re in a 12 team, 5×5, MI, CI, 5 OF, 1 Utility, 1 Catcher league, similar to our Razzball Commenter Leagues.  Anyway, here’s some pairings for the first two rounds of 2013 fantasy baseball drafts:

1. Miguel Cabrera – You can pair Swiggy Cabrera with any position player except another 3rd baseman.  Due to Miggy’s speed, which is barely faster than Leonardo, Raphael,  Michelangelo and Donatello — the turtles not the dead artists, you should be looking to draft someone that gives you at least ten steals.  Goldschmidt could work.  That would be the most unlikely German-Latin combo since Argentina took in Nazi war criminals and forced them to be kosher butchers.  “I’d like to stuff your derma and hang it on my wall.”  That’s Otto Cornedbeeferschwitz.  Wanna go with Jose Reyes and Miggy?  I don’t mind that.  Have a hankering for Dustin Pedroia and Miggy?  Hankers away, Captain!  Thinking Adrian Gonzalez would be a fun one?  I’m not so sure.  You’re just adding Miggy Point-Five, and that’s not as in the fifth iteration of Miguel that has evolved from a tadpole into a complicated computer program that you don’t understand.  That’s as in Miggy/2.  You’re still gonna get no speed and just power.  I don’t think that’ll kill your team, but you would be better off drafting a little more balanced with your second pick.

2. Ryan Braun – Stats-wise he’s one part God, two parts powdered sugar.  Speaking of which, what’s the deal with powdered sugar?  I feel like everywhere I’ve ever lived in my entire life I’ve had a box of powdered sugar and I don’t think I’ve ever used it.  Am I making powdered donuts?  No, no I’m not.  Am I making… What else is this stuff used for?  It doesn’t work in coffee.  I tried.  Somebody give me something to do with this box of powdered sugar.  Can I give it to Goodwill?  Position-wise, Braun’s not as delectable.  You have a guy that fills your stat line but you still need four more outfielders and both corner spots.  If I draft Braun, I’d definitely try and get a corner man.  Longoria could be around, that sounds promising, as in I want to buy a Promise Ring for both players and get a cozy cabin in the woods for us three.  Beltre could work, as well.  A-Gon is more like, “Hey-Mon-Sounds-Good.”  Goldschmidt and Braun?  Otto Cornedbeeferschwitz could get behind that.  Braun with Reyes or Pedroia?  Eh.  Don’t really love that.  That means you’re now in the third round still without a corner man.  Then Verlander falls to you in the third and, before you know it, you’re asking me if a corner infield of Youk and Alberto Callaspo is strong.  You ruined your draft; go take a nap for six months.

3. Andrew McCutchen – Similar case example to Braun.  Gets you all kinds of solid stats, but position-wise you’re a Powerball slot machine short of three cherries (confusing metaphor alert!).  You really should take a corner man.  A-Gon, Goldschmidt, Longoria… Yes, please and thank you if you stay healthy.

4. Mike Trout – You don’t want another outfielder.  You can take Reyes, Hanley, Pedroia or Kinsler, but then you might only have 35-40 homers after two picks and some people are getting that with one pick.  Trout and A-Gon would go together like butter and toast.  David Wright or Ryan Zimmerman don’t bother me with Trout.  Sour cream and chives are even better. (Note to self:  eat before writing otherwise you just make a bunch of food comparisons.)  Draft Goldschmidt, then you can make a jersey with the name Goldtrout to wear for the self-pic you post on Plenty of Fish.  The girls will love that.  Right, four lady readers?

5. Robinson Cano – Not to be paired with Kinsler or Pedroia.  Since Cano is a power threat at a normally weaker position, I’d take a speed/power outfielder (CarGo, Justin Upton, Adam Jones), a 1st baseman or a 3rd baseman.  Avoid Reyes or Hanley or any shortstop.  You don’t want to have to scrounge together an outfield and two corners leaving the 2nd round.

6. Albert Pujols – What’s the worst year you can imagine for Pujols?  85/28/100/.275/7?  I’m gonna enjoy pairing that with anyone but another 1st baseman.  I say that as if it’s a done deal because for the first time in a while I don’t need the number one pick overall to get him, so it is possible (though still unlikely if I get a 5th or lower draft pick due to his ADP).  Think about how happy you would’ve been the last few years to get Longoria and Pujols on the same team.  Think about how that’s a possibility now?  That makes me horny.  Cougar, where are you?!

7. Prince Fielder – Another guy in the same boat as Pujols or Miggy.  Not literally; that boat wouldn’t float.  He’s more like Miggy than Pujols, as it would be nice to get a 2nd guy that chucks in a handful of steals.  Fielder and CarGo?  I’d tap that!  Fielder and Adam Jones?  What the hey!  But hey’s for horses… BTW, Fielder’s a vegetarian.  Hmm, coincidence?  Fielder and Kinsler, Reyes or Pedroia?  Sounds copacetic to me.

8. Joey Votto – Rinse, repeat, fold, launder again what I said about Fielder, Pujols and Miggy.  Since Votto is a bit lower on the power potential food chain but has some steals, I’d prefer a power outfielder or a 3rd baseman that has some steals instead of a middle infielder that is fifty-fifty power/steals like Pedroia and Kinsler or eighty-twenty like Reyes.  Votto and Beltre or Zimmerman or Wright all works for me.

9. Giancarlo Stanton – I’d like to pair him with a giant comforter, a glass of White Zin and a small nook near a fireplace, but if that’s not readily available, Reyes, Kinsler or Pedroia would do the trick.  I’d also pair him with a corner man, but I’d go more with a guy like Goldschmidt or Longoria than A-Gon due to Giancarlo’s bulging power potential.  Don’t draft another outfielder with him; that could make him jealous — a major no-no.  Now Harlem Shake!

10. Justin Upton – Much like The Dread Pirate and Ryan Braun, Upton gives you power and speed, so you’re good to go with anyone stats-wise but you need a corner man.  I wouldn’t kick Upton and Longoria out of bed, unless Giancarlo called and was coming home early.  Upton and AuShizz works.  In fact, Rudy and I just drafted that in LABR.  The post about that draft is coming later today.  Use your Starbucks cup as a bedpan and don’t move until you read it.

11. Carlos Gonzalez – Same story, different blurb with Justin Upton, Dread and Braun.

12. Evan Longoria – If Longoria is your first pick, I owe you a firm handshake for following my rankings to the tee.  Let’s try and get you out of this one alive, so you don’t throw a bag of crap at my house in October.  Don’t draft Kinsler, CarGo, Tulo, Hamilton or Bautista.  You don’t need any kind of injury risk with your 2nd pick too.  Adam Jones and Matt Kemp are next on my rankings, but Jones is the only one likely to still be there.  I’d take him with Longoria.  Solid guy that gets you 550+ ABs.  Goldschmidt’s not bad, but you do have a tad more risk than I’d like with your first two picks.  I could see reaching for A-Gon.  Another guy that gets you a ton of counting stats by staying on the field.  Pedroia isn’t a terrible pick either.  He’ll appreciate that you got squirrely with your first pick, knowing it takes nuts to win this thing.

Depending on what format you are mocking, you could likely pair Goldschmidt with ant of these guys in the 3rd or 4th round. At Yahoo, they have him ranked in the 40’s and I’ve been able to snag him in the 4th round with regularity.

In addition to Aboot Schmidt, I’ve noticed a bunch of players ranked much lower than you, which I know is always the case. To name a few, Jennings, Zobrist, Scherzer, Frazier, Headley, Rutledge, and RojaPinga could all be big steals. After doing some mocks, the only players I like that you may undervalue is Harvey.

Anywho, I know there will be a post about comparing rankings at some point, but what else is there to think about at 4 am.

    • Fungazi says:
      (link)

@bossmanjunior: I agree, I’m still trying to tweak these ranks to compare with the league rankings and ADP’s. I like them a lot but if I can squeeze out some guys that are Yahoo ranked better than Razz ranks while still keeping to these as best I can, then I’m not reaching into the stars with every pick.

Good example is the pitcher Ryu ranked 31 overall for SP (i think?) I could probably get in the last rounds, unless he does something incredible in spring training, and use a pick on another highly ranked player in that spot.

@CDawg: Not a pitcher yet. I’d go Starlin over A Gon (too old, injuries). You’ve already got an OF I would want another position player before going OF again. Starlin’s young and could be a top two or three SS for the next 10 years.

Barefoot Contessa’s chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting* (*made with powdered sugar). Jeffrey LOVES these.

    Ingredients
12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
    2/3 cup granulated sugar
2/3 cup light brown sugar, packed
2 extra-large eggs, at room temperature
    2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 cup buttermilk, shaken, at room temperature
1/2 cup sour cream, at room temperature
    2 tablespoons brewed coffee
    1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
    1 cup good cocoa powder
    1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
Kathleen’s Peanut Butter Icing, recipe follows
Chopped salted peanuts, to decorate, optional
    Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line cupcake pans with paper liners.

In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the butter and 2 sugars on high speed until light and fluffy, approximately 5 minutes. Lower the speed to medium, add the eggs 1 at a time, then add the vanilla and mix well. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, sour cream, and coffee. In another bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt. On low speed, add the buttermilk mixture and the flour mixture alternately in thirds to the mixer bowl, beginning with the buttermilk mixture and ending with the flour mixture. Mix only until blended. Fold the batter with a rubber spatula to be sure it’s completely blended.

Divide the batter among the cupcake pans (1 rounded standard ice cream scoop per cup is the right amount). Bake in the middle of the oven for 20 to 25 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes, remove from the pans, and allow to cool completely before frosting.

Frost each cupcake with Peanut Butter Icing and sprinkle with chopped peanuts, if desired.

    Kathleen’s Peanut Butter Icing:

    1 cup confectioners’ sugar
    1 cup creamy peanut butter
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
    3/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
    1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
    1/3 cup heavy cream
Place the confectioners’ sugar, peanut butter, butter, vanilla, and salt in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Mix on medium-low speed until creamy, scraping down the bowl with a rubber spatula as you work. Add the cream and beat on high speed until the mixture is light and smooth.

    Chris Sale – 8th round/7 pts.
    Matt Harvey – 13th round/5 pts.

You know how you can sort of tell where guys in the early rounds might get drafted based upon the rankings from the website you’re using? My big $$$ league uses CBS. Instead of coming out with a top 300 this year, each of their big 3 perts came out with their own top 300. How much variety is there? Edwin Encarnacion is ranked 24th… or 37th… or 53rd… depends on whose list you look at. R. Zimmerman? 22, 28, or 56. Andrus is 34, 86, and 93. Headley is 35, 40, and 108.

I obviously use a different set of rankings (wink wink), but I’ve always used the defaults as a gauge during the draft. Nice job hedging your bets, CBS. Way to commit.

    Grey,

How squirrely do you get trying to predict other drafters and how they use online draft room rankings. For instance in most mocks I’ve been doing on ESPN (I know it’s still early), Giancarlo in the 2nd, Reyes, Kinsler, Pedroia in the 3rd, A-Gon in the 4th, AuShizz in the 6th! Where do you draw the line by trying to wait someone out based on online software pre-draft rankings….2rds early, 3rds?

Like waiting on AuShizz until the 4th (which is still 2-rds early) and use the first three rounds for non-1B to end up with something like Giancarlo, Longoria, Pedroia, AuShizz for your first four…mmmm…meaty

Hola, 14 team keeper league, we get to keep 4 guys. 7×7 with OBP and TB+BB for the 2 extra offensive cats.

I have the following draft situation:

I draft last (won the league last year)

    RD1
    RD2
    RD3
    RD4 – Giancarlo
    RD5 – Adam Jones
    RD6 – Granderson
    RD7 – Billy Moobs

I know I am very good on power to start off my team, but am worried about AVG and OBP.

With my first 2 picks (7th and 8th overall), I have the following guys seemingly avail:

    Alex Gordon
    Brett Lawrie
    Choo
    Phillips
    Papi
    Mauer
    Aramis Ramirez

I already have 3 OF, we can start 4 plus 2 DH spots, but I am hesitant to draft more OF with these first 3 picks, handcuffing myself later when a good value might fall to me. Thoughts appreciated.

    • Todd25 says:
      (link)

@quimmy: IMO, i would snag B-Phil with one of the first 3 picks there because he is steady production at shallow position and wont hurt you in ratios, while in Cin, career of .280/.330, and as for other 2 might grab a hot corner from Lawrie/ARam. are those the best 3B avail? and if that list is best available, then i would go with Choo even though hes an OF, he’ll maintain good ratios and give you speed which is the balance you need.

      • quimmy says:
        (link)

@Todd25: I have pick 7, 8 and 24. I was thinking about going B.Phillips, Lawrie and then grabbing the best avail player at 24. I am just not sure how much they lift my avg and obp.

      • quimmy says:
        (link)

@Todd25: rzimm, lawrie and aram. rzimm will be off the board before I pick for sure.

        • Todd25 says:
          (link)

@quimmy: hmm then i would say go b-phil and then lawrie/aram (though both of those are projected below .280) and then hope for choo or someone similar at 24th. if rzimm is there at 7th, then i would be go him then b-phil, etc.

also you can always play some trade offers, like personally, i don’t want grandy this year, and grey is pretty negative towards him too. i would try to trade grandy for someone that won’t kill your avg with a similar skill set. that would give you more drafting wiggle room.

          • quimmy says:
            (link)

@Todd25: I have a standing offer I can hit accept on of Grandy for Panda?

            • Todd25 says:
              (link)

@quimmy: personally, i would take panda, solving your 3B & ratio issue, then draft b-phil and choo/gordon.

but i am going to defer to Grey on this one…

              • quimmy says:
                (link)

I guess it depends if he is drawn to “authentic” samuri swords next or those heroin infomercials that play incessantly after 3am comedy central.

    Hey Grey,
Great job as usual! I was wondering, with a mustache as phenomenal as yours, do you just cover it in whipped cream and let your lady friend lick it off for valentines day?

In a 5×5 roto league where QS replaces W, I am keeping Jason Heyward (Round 6), Desmond Jennings (Round 23) and Brett Lawrie (Rounds 26). Who would be your 4th keeper?

Josh Hamilton (late Round 3- I will probably have pick 33-36)
    Brandon Phillips (early Round 4)
    Gio (late Round 9)
    Middlebrooks (Round 27)
    Kris Medlen (Round 27)

  27. Boy I tried a fantasy draft… I will work on getting your draft list tied to my draft – because the ESPN draft player thing is way confusing…. Like Yahoo’s much better…

Info not pictures are important… And less is better… Their player is display far to cramped…

    Stanton 3rd
    McCutch 8th
    Craig 10th
    Cespedes 11th
    Peavy 16th
My question is, looks like Josh Hamilton will fall to me. Should I take him and finush off my amazing OF and UTIL spot and pass over other possible options there which would be Hamels, Cain, bumgardner, Kinsler, pedroa, wright, reyes. And I could also grab one of them on turn around. Thanks!

10 team keeper, 5×5 Roto, $260 Auction league. Keep 4. I am sold on McCutch at $34, Stanton at $17, and E5 at $11. Choices are Longoria at $31, Upton at $37, Zobrist at $29. I usually don’t keep pitchers, but they are Bumgarner at $14, Darvish at $12 and Price at $31. League tends to go stars & scrubs. Given this article, I’m thinking Longo. Gray, what do you think?

@Fungus: its in the box score and its the classic stat. I like to keep it easy to follow for everyone in the league. I use to play in some OBP leagues with guys that were in love with Bonds and Pujols because they would walk twice a game. But I found it to be a cop out when guys would hit .240 and had .290 OBP. If i was to do it I would include K’s to balance out the Adam Dunn types. I do play in an OPS league and the only reason i stay is because I like the people I play with and tolerate the stats THEY chose.

    @Grey :

I’m in a little bit of a tough spot and would like your recommendation. It is a 5×5 12 team mixed roto 6 year (entering year 2) keeper league. I’m keeping CarGo as first round pick and have Goldschmidt as a 5th round keeper. I also have Craig and Machado for some additional power kept as a 19th/20th rounders.

My dilemma is I can keep AGon or Reyes as a second round pick, everyone else from your top 24 is being kept or most likely being drafted and I pick 11th in the 3rd round.

I’m leaning towards grabbing Reyes because I have Goldschmidt and think I can draft a better or comparable outfielder to AGon shortly after.

    Thoughts?

Just finished a lunch hour mock draft. I have to say that following a solid
tiering ranking list netted me a solid starter at every position. I try not to
reach for guys too much and just draft on needs + value. Pitching is uber-deep,
I was picking from the 1st position (10 teams), with the final pick (220)
I had my choice of Matt Harvey, Jarrod Parker, and Hyun-Jin Ryu! I went with
the upside and K’s of Harvey. My hitting ended up pretty much as good as I
could hope for. My only wish is that I had a sexier name at the top of my rotation,
but still, they’re very solid from top to bottom.

@Grey: Yeah, at that point in the draft I figured he was worth a what the heck insurance plan (same with Utley and Hart). Because of the odd rankings in the CBS mock draft room I didn’t even realize that both Ike Davis and Hosmer were still available, but still snagged them both the next time around. Silly mock drafters. Posey went 10th overall, Ian Desmond 24, Mauer 25, Justin Upton 34, Adrian Beltre 45, Goldschmidt 57, Jay Bruce 62, Shin-Soo Choo 101!

@Grey: I’ve just realised that I was a bit confused about what powdered sugar actually is. I thought it was caster sugar, but it’s actually what we call icing sugar.

You wouldn’t have that with lemon juice on pancakes (though you would have caster sugar).

Think the only thing I’ve ever used icing sugar for is to make, er, icing for a cake or somesuch. But it is great sprinkled on strawberries and cream poured over the top…

@Grey: Yeah, while it didn’t pay well, resulting in inordinate stress and an early passing, my dad’s job as a baker had some pretty great aspects…I actually recall a time when we had an entire full sized freezer full of miniature pies. Needless to say, I was a chubby kid until I discovered skateboarding.

Whoo! The bad news is that its a 10 team league with very basic rosters layout (no CI, MI, etc), and despite my best efforts to lobby for a 12 team format, the commissioner is unwilling. I’m in the process of trying to convince them to expand the roster lineup at the very least. Its a league my fraternity started 8 years ago so there are a lot of bragging rights.

  48. bossmanjunior says:

    Grey,

Follow up to my above post. Would you alter your draft strategy for that type of league? Its a 10 team C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, 3 OF, UTL, 2 SP, 2 RP, 4 P, 4 BN format where most guys carry 7 starters, 3 closers, and 2 bench bats.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@bossmanjunior: The league will be shallow… I wouldn’t alter my strategy, I would be very hesitant about taking a pitcher in the first 5 rounds or so… I.e., pitching is deep…

      • bossmanjunior says:
        (link)

        @Grey:

With the roster configuration, it actually always seems like the waiver is deep with hitting, especially outfielders. I usually target 2-3 OF in the first 10 picks and then grab some upside (Reddick, Gardner, Marte) in the later rounds.

Just so I don’t lost all credibility, my other leagues are all 12 team. I just care about this league more for the personal rivalry and money. Do it for the green!

    OF – Trout $15
    OF – Harper $11

Best offensive players available are Braun, Miggy, Pujols, McCutchen, AGon, Cano. Likely cost of any of them would be +$50 because this league has skewed draft pricing. Should I target one of them and a few upside guys to fill out the roster or go for quantity by picking up a Heyward and a Bruce? I’m leaning towards Braun because although he’ll take $69 it’ll negate the impact if I trade Trout for a monster package relatively early (first day sell off trades occasionally happen as people rebuild).

    Thanks!

I’d keep Trout and go with Bruce and Heyward types…

@royce! Now that’s a good idea. I normally cook something extra nice at home (dinner’s nice every night at my house, yo) rather than going out, but was pretty low key this year.

@Steve: thanks! I think it’s our best idea ever! Every time I tell friends about it they either say “I wanna do that!” Or there’s an awkward pause. Kind of a test I like to run on new people.

Hey in yr 16 teamer did anyone grab Gyorko?

        @royce!: Nope.

@Steve: word has it the padres will be trying him out at 2B during spring training. Seems he’d be very ownable in a 16 team league of he made the opening roster.
