Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

It’s always good to look at spring training numbers to give you an idea what you can expect from guys during the season.  They’re facing the top pitchers who are all displaying their best stuff.  No one needs time to get warmed up.  No one’s trying new pitches or getting a feel for the ball.  They are at the height of their game in March.  In fact, I think someone should propose to Bud that the World Series could easily be played in March.  Yes, The March Classic.  I like how that sounds.  Since these spring training numbers mean so much, I decided to look at some players in March:

Travis Buck – Four ding dongs with a phenomenal spring OPS of 1.165.  Now we just need him to pull a Giancarlo and hyphenate his last name to Buck-You.

Scott Moore – Who Moore?  How about “Who Cares Moore, He Has 3 Homers Already!”  Am I right, or am I right-right?

Ryan Dempster – The Dumpster dropped out all his garbage last year and he’s back with a 1.50 ERA.  Is that champagne?  No, that’s Dempster sparkling!

Alex Rodriguez - Smoking balls left and right and that’s just what he’s doing off the field.  Seriously, he’s hitting bomb after bomb this March.  This is pulled from the latest article on A-Rod’s man strength, “No, you can’t ignore these numbers,” Girardi said. “And the way he’s driving the baseball is what you’re used to seeing from Alex and that you can’t ignore.”

These stats are from 2011 Spring Training.  That’s right.  You fell for the oldest trick in the book, mon.  These are not from 2012.  Seriously, please stop looking at spring stats.  That Girardi quote is from 2011 as A-Rod was having a spring training to remember only to go on and have his worst season.  Ryan Dempster was having about as solid of a spring as a pitcher can have and then he went out and had a 9.58 ERA in April of last year and never looked right.  ‘Scott Moore who?’ is right.  He has 7 homers in his career and did nothing last year.  Travis Buck had 2 homers all of last year after lighting up Spring Training.   Spring stats mean nothing.  Let me say it again for emphasis, spring stats mean nothing.  You should only be looking at who’s healthy, who’s winning position battles and who’s winning rotation spots.  The rest is meaningless.

(Just reposted this from the prev; apologies for double-dipping)

Anyone have any thoughts on Trumbo’s odds of getting play (yes, Ms. Milano, I see your hand raised, why don’t we let someone else answer the question)?

Angels looking all jammed (weird, because last I checked, it was hell that was in danger of getting overcrowded), but I still dream of 25 HRs/okay avg from a 15th-round pick with 1B/3B/OF eligibility. In those dreams, true, I’m also being force-fed churros by the Rally Monkey, but still.

Does he get more than ~250 ABs (Trumbo, not the monkey)?

@Long Bawls, He definitely gets 250 ABs, not sure he goes over 400 ABs though, that’ll be the trick.

so how do you feel about mike minor and his scoreless Spring training? is he more likely to give us the stats you outlined in the rankings?

or does it not affect where hes ranked/what the line you forecasted is…

i ended up getting him on a couple teams and am happy i did, but now i have a bunch of managers offering me trades FOR him…

Can I get a link? I don’t have a fancy-pants iPhone, I still tell time with a sun dial and am convinced that a witch has cast a spell on Adam Dunn’s bat… anyhow, I need a link to the MP3 so I can down load it to my phone and listen to it on my way home… in my horse-less carriage.

So the numbers are supposed to be completely ignored? I read an article on MLB.com about Hanley and how he’s feeling way healthier this year than he was last. He didn’t hit a single HR last year in ST but has been tearing it up so far in ST.

I’m just not sure what to think about the springs of Hanley and Lawrie at all. Not to mention how pathetic Braun has done so far.

On that note, arod looks solid. I’ve scene every at bat since he’s been a Yankee, and if he stays healthy he ‘ll be a nice bargain. The treatment in Germany that both Kobe and grant hill have I think will have an impact. I mean, grant hill was done 7 years ago and he’s still productive. I dealt arod in a keeper for madbum, I don’t regret it but he looks good.

Also, I was shocked that Ty was just barely able to be Dun”Buffet”bar in what was basically a foot race. If he was half as athletic as he appears, he and Emily would have won every single challenge.

Looking Over your projections for A-Gon and was wondering why the low average. AG hasn’t hit below .277 since becoming a full time player. This is the first time he has had protection in the line up and I would expect better BA projections. Sure his BABIP was .380 Last year and I don’t expect him to hit > .320 but that was also because he was sprinkling hits to oppo’ at the cost of power numbers due to a nagging shoulder injury. He has said he feels 100% for the first time in years this ST.

        (link)

@Grey, sorry, I was referring to 2011 Michael Morse. He was going bonkers last spring, and the theory you highlight in this article is that these kind of stats are usually a head fake since Spring Training numbers don’t mean much.

Or, in other words, could it be that Ryan Raburn 2012 / Brandon Belt 2012 are going to be like Michael Morse 2011, or more like Travis Buck 2011? Morse 2011 would be the contrarian to this kind spring training dismissal, I would argue…

        • Grey

          Grey says:

@birrrdy!, I could point to a dozen other things besides Morse’s 2011 spring that primed him for a breakout.

    (link)

Well played, as usual Grey. Just did my first of three money league drafts this weekend. This one I anticipate being the least competitive, but I always appreciate your insight, so here goes. Standard Yahoo! 12 teamer

    C-Matt Wieters
    1B-Eric Hosmer
    2B-Kelly Johnson
    3B-Evan Longoria
SS-Elvis Andrus (I know, I’m as shocked as you are, will explain below)
    OF-Justin Upton,

    • Mark says:
      (link)

      @Mark,

      D’oh! Sorry bout that. Continuing….

OF-Justin Upton, Jay Bruce, Jason Heyward
      Util-Alex Rios, Alex Presley
      SP-Zack Greinke, Mat Latos
      RP-Sergio Santos, Kyle Farnsworth
P-Matt Moore, Grant Balfour, Addison Reed, Mike Adams
BN-Tommy Hanson, Anibal Sanchez, Mike Minor, Brandon Belt, Ryan Roberts

I really waited on pitching in this draft. After Greinke, the next pitcher I took was Moore at pick 106, which is about where I feel he starts looking like a good value. I then went crazy picking pitchers with my next 5 or 6 straight picks.

Part of what threw me was getting Andrus at pick 63. Even there, I don’t see him as a profit guy necessarily, but coming off Hosmer at 58 (another oddish pick for me, but I decided to go for it), I wanted a stable producer and felt I could use some speed to help balance already having Longo and Bruce. Either way, that’s about as early as I’d think about taking Andrus.

The other odd pick for me here was Hanson, but he fell to pick 130, where he’s definitely worth the risk. Then also getting Sanchez at 154 and Minor at 183, I feel fine about the SP.

RP is a bit more troubling, the last closer run finished right before my Rios pick at 202, so instead I nabbed up Rios and went for risky closers’ handcuffs and specifically guys who could provide decent value even if they don’t close right away, hence Balfour, Adams, and Reed. Think Derek Holland is worth a #3 waiver priority at this point? FAs clear tomorrow. I’m leaning against, figuring I can find saves somewhere, but its a bit tempting.

      • Grey

        Grey says:
        (link)

@Mark, Thanks! Team looks rock solid, obviously you’re missing a few saves, but SAGNOF! No, Derek Holland isn’t worth a waiver wire pick with your staff.

        • Mark says:
          (link)

@Grey, Whoops, brainfart! Meant Greg Holland for the SAGNOF! with Soria ouching.

          • Grey

            Grey says:
            (link)

            @Mark, I’d take Holland… Lose Adams…

            • Mark says:
              (link)

@Grey, Yeah, my only debate is whether to play it safe but sacrifice by waiver priority or wait and see if I can do it for free. Usually I wouldn’t care about waiver priority, but with Balfour and Reed I’m not even sure saves will be an issue by May without a move, and Holland isn’t even really a lock for saves at this point anyway. I almost drafted Holland instead of Adams, but before the Soria injury news broke, I saw Adams and Holland as basically a coin flip for saves (both setting up for closers with potential issues, both with another decent candidate besides themselves for saves), so I went with Adams’ longer track record.

              • Grey

                Grey says:
                (link)

@Mark, Waiver priority doesn’t matter in a 12 team league, unless you play with guys who will cut Prince and Miggy…

  25. Jef says:
    (link)

So, it wasn’t on this site that I once read to ignore spring training batting averages except if a hitter is stroking at +.200 higher than his season average? Which, in this twisted memory of mine, back in the day was the indicator for Prince’s breakout season? That sounds too wonky for rotoworld, and too smart for CBS. I really don’t read anything else…I didn’t dream that, did it? Does that sound like a Grey addendum to the “ignore spring training stats” rule?

HELP: 7th pick in 12-team H2H points. (I’m keeping Justin Upton with my 2nd round 18th pick)

    A. Draft Bautista but keep my eyes open if Lawrie or Reynolds really drop and move JB to OF?
    B. Votto b/c Cabrera/Pujols will be gone and he’s clearly #3 1B?
    C. Braun because he’s angry.
    D. Tulo because I’m not drafting Hanley/Reyes and don’t feel like reaching early for Andrus/Castro.
    E. I have J-Ups to so take best pitcher available and then go hitters until round 7-8.

    Thanks.

        • Mark says:
          (link)

@Grey, Well it nailed the big years for Bautista and Tulo, but otherwise yeah. I am secretly guilty of somewhat abashedly using Spring Training numbers for confirmation bias, and just about nothing else. If I already kind of like a guy as a breakout candidate for various reasons, and they have a big spring, I’ll probably treat the evidence as stronger than it actually is. It worked last year for Mike Morse, who I drafted on a lot of teams (then, of course, dropped on many when he got off to a slow start and I needed to make up ground at other positions, partly because I was mad at myself for letting the confirmation bias seep into my thinking), and Alex Gordon (who I also drafted on a lot of teams and I believe was the only player I had on all my teams by the end of last year, but he got off to a good start and had 3B eligibility, so wasn’t really a tough call at any point and I probably would have drafted/watched him in most situations anyway).

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@Grey, Yeah I don’t think it looks TERRIBLE, just not good enough for an 8 teamer. Who would be a decent target (at least what tier) for those two?

    • The Vaporizers says:

@Wilsonian, When are you going to just give Grey the user name and password to your teams?

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@The Vaporizers, I love comments like this. Seriously? You’re going to bust my balls for coming here and asking questions just like the other god knows how many people do every day? I’ve sent out a couple trade offers in this league already that didn’t get any bites. It’s possible I was shooting too high, so I was wondering what kind of tier might actually be reasonable because I was getting tired of sending trade offers that went ignored. I’m on my teams all the time, making a butt load of moves without his approval. I didn’t know I had to have your permission to get advice from a friggin advice website. I also do a decent amount of advice giving, so apparently I know a little bit of what I’m talking about. You haven’t commented on anyone else’s posts and they’re all from the same people I see here everyday.

I know I should just ignore you, but I hate how people can hide behind computers to talk their shizz… I doubt you’d be this much of a prick to me in person.

        • The Vaporizers says:
          (link)

@Wilsonian, c’mon dude, you ask him about every single move you make in every single league, don’t kid yourself. Remember that “slow draft” you had where you were asking Grey for advice on every single one of your picks and you’d post it in multiple threads? And he would be like, “Umm, I already answered that in the other thread the 4th time you asked me the same question.” And asking for advice in an 8 team league? C’mon son. The only advice that should be given for an 8 team league is to find more friends. I would be willing to bet money via a PayPal transfer that if someone was to count them up that you indeed do ask the most “your team specific” questions, and it wouldn’t even be close.

And I wouldn’t say that you ask too many questions if I saw you in person? What does that even mean? Are you saying that you are such an intimidating fellow that I wouldn’t even be able to utter a word to you and instead I’d piss my pants just from the very site of your hulking, Stanton-like body?

Also, if you are someone that gets offended when someone says you ask too many questions, that mean you ask too many questions…

        • The Vaporizers says:
          (link)

@Wilsonian, “I also do a decent amount of advice giving”

Really? Who would listen. It seems pretty clear that you don’t even trust your own advice seeing that you can’t sub in a player off your bench on a Monday or Thursday without first getting Grey’s blessing.

          • Wilsonian says:
            (link)

@The Vaporizers, wow man, definitely sounds like you have some issues you need to attend to. Why do you pay so much attention to what I do on here? That’s my main question. You seem to take offense to someone coming to a website garnered for advice and asking for advice. Sounds to me like you pay a little too close of attention to what I’m doing. I never once said I don’t come on here and ask questions. But it’s pretty safe to say that there are a lot of people here each and every day that ask questions. They’re the same people. Yeah, there are new people here every now and then, but for the most part the names remain the same.

And yeah, I know you wouldn’t say shit to me in person. Because I know you’re not so damn tough that you’re going to talk shit to someone you don’t even know. I’m not a hulking man. I’m actually laid up from back surgery, which is a good reason why I have been posting so much recently. I just know you aren’t Mr. Badass that goes around shit talking people that you have no clue who they are.

I just get tired of people like you. There’s no room for it. If you don’t like me asking questions, just ignore it and move along and ask your own. That’s what I don’t like. People like you hide behind their computer to talk shit when they know they wouldn’t do it in person. This world, let alone this forum, have no room for pieces of garbage like you.

            • The Vaporizers says:
              (link)

@Wilsonian, let me guess, you just copy/pasted that reply from one of the other 146 times it was mentioned that you really do ask a ridiculous amount of questions?

And you really seem to be the one that sounds upset. You act like I came knocking on your front door looking for a fight and screaming the worst obscenities imaginable, yet all I said was “When are you going to just give Grey the user name and password to your teams?” and you took EXTREME offense to it. Whats that say about you?

And keep telling me how tough you are in “real life”, I find it hysterical. What’s next, you going to post the address to your Mom’s house on the other side of the country and challenge me to a fight? Yeah, that’s logical…

PS, the only FBB advice you are qualified to give is “Ask Grey”

PSS, only one person is getting all emotional here

              PSSS, it sure ain’t me!

What’s up Grey, I hope that all is well.

Just wanted to get your quick thoughts on my team I drafted last night. Its 12 team H2H, 6×6 where we also include OPS and QS.

At pick 8, both Votto and Braun were available. I had a hard time deciding, but since I already have Braun in my keeper league, I decided to go with a top 1B in my redraft league. Then to my extreme astonishment, I was able to get Braun at pick 17. PICK 17!!!!!! I could not believe it. And yes, before anyone asks, there a obviously a couple morons in this league….

    C Doumit
    1B Votto
    2B Utley
    SS Dee Gordon
    3B Sandoval
    OF Braun
    OF Bruce
    OF Morse
    OF Tabata
    Util Butler
    Util Lind
    Bench
    Belt and Allen Craig

    SP
    Greinke
    Gallardo
    Anibel
    Luebke
    Chacin
    Minor
    Peacock
    Leake

    RP
    Valverde
    Betancourt
    Guerra
    Romo

        (link)

@Grey, Yeah, I’m not thrilled about Tabata being in my starting lineup. Pitching was going very fast in the draft and I didn’t want to be completely left behind so I grabbed Greinke in the 4th and Gallardo in the 6th.

First draft of the year (keeper league, 8th pick). 10 team roto (R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, OBP, SLG x W, QS, K, K/9, WHIP, ERA, S):
    C – Matt Wieters (7th)
    1B – Adrian Gonzalez (1st)
    2B – Ian Kinsler (2nd)
    3B – Mark Reynolds (22nd)

Missed the boat on 3rd base so I waited till the end of the draft (all Baltimore fans, so I knew Reynolds was on everyone’s shit list). I figure I can build up a solid lead on saves and make some trades to eventually improve the average drain on 3B (and BJ too). Thoughts? Thanks!

A team in my league just dropped Bryce Harper, I am thinking about dropping Brian Fuentes to get Harper. I already have 3 closers (Soria, Street, Thornton) and each of their handcuffs (Holland, Cashner, Crain). I am not thrilled with Fuentes and what he can do to my ERA and prefer each of my closer handcuffs to him. Am I crazy for dropping a potential closer for 2/3rds of a year from Harper? Would you recommend dropping a handcuff instead?

    Need Outfield Help Grey:

I kept J-Up and have basically determined im going to wait and go with adam jones as my number 2 since his floor is so high. I put in parenthesis which guys i believe i can get in my league at what number outfielder they would then be for me. a lot of players have been kept at lower than their value so people have money to throw around. i want to put together the best possible outfield all around still taking into consideration we use batting avg and obp and i figure going cheap at middle infield will make me need to make up for obp in outfield with what ill lack in cozart/altuve(banking on buying them). so which 5 will give me the best balance?
    Justin Upton(keeper/1), Adam Jones(2), Jason Werth(3), Brett Gardner(3), Krispie Young(3), Torii Hunter(4), Swisher(4), Bonifacio(4), Dexter Fowler(5), Matt Joyce(5), Cespedes(5), Vernon Wells(5), Denard Span(5), De Aza(5)

@Steve, Glad I am not the only one who noticed this. I had been thinking that nobody had made any moves, until I saw all of the players on waivers. I traded away Holland today. First time I feel like I got hosed by another owner who was “in the know” and I wasn’t. :(

      @timSTi, Eh, there’s a chance Holland can’t hang as a closer anyway.

    • timSTi says:

@timSTi, Oh, and your MR rankings, are they geared towards leagues without Holds or with them? Typical 5×5 looking for any possible MR’s that might get saves. Have Uehara, K-Rod, & Benoit but Raunch & Melancon are out there.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@SwaggerJackers, Shallow, yeah. Also, not sure how you got those prices. Really cheap deals, unless it’s not $260. How is Youk and Cano and same price? Team looks solid, bit light on speed and starters… Yeah, grab Holland…

      • SwaggerJackers says:
        (link)

@Grey, Yeah, the cheap guys were keepers (Tulo, Cano, Bautista, F-Her and Lee). I was feeling pretty good about my starters. Is it just because the backend has Stauffer and Fister? I could pick up Niese if that helps anything.

  55. Matt says:
    (link)

Hey, Grey. I’m in the midst of an email draft for a 12 team 5×5 H2H league. Well, actually we’re about to enter the 7th round. Anyhoo, Wright is still out there. Does the power of Christ compel me to grab him should he fall to my next pick or two, or would that only make my head spin? I assume your ranking of him may have dropped further with the injury fears as it has with this entire league, but dang, I’m thinking this may be a no-brainer at this point.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Matt, I’d grab him in the 7th round…

  56. Hawk says:

6 x 6 with OBP instead of avg and total bases, and standard 5 + holds on pitching side. Traded David Wright (pre Injury news), Clayton Kershaw and Starlin Castro for Hanley and Brett Lawrie.

    Joey Votto
    Robinson Cano
    Hanley Ramirez

    1- Jupton
    2- Bruce
    3- Tex
    4- Lawrie

Beltre and Gallardo are still on the board. Should I go Beltre even though he’ll be my last AL pick and I already have a 3B? would love to hold onto that AL pick and see who falls to me later in the draft, but Beltre in the 5th is hard to pass up.

roto 5×5 12 team. batter positions are C 1B 2B 3B SS OF OF OF Utility.

@TheBurgler, Looks like a solid team, your pitching is a little weak after the front four, but in H2H that’s not as big a deal. I like the hitting a lot, might be a little weak on OPS, not terrible though.

  62. Aaron says:
    (link)

I am looking for everyone’s opinion (not just Grey) of the following 4 guys getting saves this year. What do you think are the best 2 out of the following 4 (for saves):

    Jonathon Broxton
    Mark Melancon
    Francisco Cordero
    Kevin Gregg

    • kangaroo hops says:

@Aaron, I’d think Melancon and Cordero. The first for injury reasons, the second maybe as a shared closer thingy.

  63. Flunkie says:
    (link)

14 team keeper, 6×6. Just picked up Greg Holland (dropping Viciedo, who was on the bench). Given that Brantley tweaked his hammy today, should I drop him and grab Pestano as well? His peripherals look good. That’d leave me with De Aza as my CF. Pretty bad sounding, but the rest of my roster kind of makes up for it. I’d then have Pestano, Holland, Jansen for my RP. I only had Jansen before today.

    Thanks Grey.

@Suck My Wieters, Pretty shallow 12 team league and don’t love your hitting, which isn’t great. There will be guys off waivers that can help so it’s not terrible. Your pitching is very good, minus Buchholz, and potentially Peacock.

Okay, you have Scherzer and Ubaldo neck-and-neck in your rankings and I have to decide between them as my last keeper. As of right now, who do you like going forward? I’m starting to think Scherzer, but Cleveland’s infield defense looks a lot better that Detroit’s. Prince Fielder’s bat is a plus, though. I’m an Indians fan, so I’m typically second guessing an Indians pitcher. Help! Thanks!

Trying to help my sister with her team in our H2H league after Yahoo autodrafted 4 shortstops plus Verlander, Hamels, Lester, Gallardo and Garza for her.

Odd as this question seems, what’s a decent SP return for Andrus (she has Tulo)? Gio tier?

Need to balance out the middle and back end of the rotation if we’re to trade aces for stud hitters, right?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@Steve, Did Vaporizers scare off your sister? I’d try for Hamels-ish, but would settle for Gio-ish.

      • Steve says:
        (link)

        @Grey, Hah!

Hamels tier? She already has three-fifths of the Hamels tier!

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

@Steve, Fair point… Yeah, Wouldn’t go lower than Gio’s tier though.

          • Steve says:
            (link)

            @Grey, No.

I’m thinking, she holds on to one of Verlander,/Hamels/Lester/Gallardo plus Garza and then backfills from there.

But they are the only 5 SPs she has, so can’t just trade aces for stud hitters straight up.

    Grey,

forgive me but I got to scrolling up and down on Yahoo! and found a “10 guys we hate than you” piece. The first guy on the guy’s list is Andrus:

“Elvis Andrus – For fantasy purposes, Andrus is a two-trick pony (Runs and Stolen Bases), which makes a top 50 price tag tough to swallow. Hitting in front of Albert Pujols and Howie Kendrick in the Angels lineup, don’t be surprised if Erick Aybar proves to be similarly proficient in Andrus’ specialty categories, and you can land him 10-plus rounds later.”

Do you think considering Aybar’s value in ADP, his numbers will be “similarly proficient” despite Andrus’ rampant potential?

Flaws in this team? I would DL howard and pick up another closer that emerges. 12 team H2H. 9 pitching and hitting cats. (inc. plate apps and pitcher apps). Think I should have drafted back up for Russell Martin but thought at the 20th round, that was a bargain.

Grateful for feedback. Congrats on an awesome first podcast. A good listen.

@Grey, Yeah was worried about that. But Lind, Beltre, minidonkey, are prob good for 30hrs a piece. Pence, Butler, Kendrick should hit round 20. guess I’d need to stream for a power OF bat as the season moves on. On the hitting side I think I’d have a great chance to win runs, plate apps, OPS, SB, AVG every week. I’d only need a little luck to win HRS and RBI on the hitting side. I think power can be overrated depending on the format.

@Grey, I couldn’t possibly hate my team more, so please lay it on thick, but I do just want to hear your thoughts for the sake of it.

The one thing I will say is that closers are WAY overvalued in this league (not a single veto for straight up trades for top 50ish hitters a few times, etc.) – so from that point alone it looks odd (i actually wish i drafted even more saves, if that makes the point further).

But i digress – check out this turd pile and let me know your thoughts. (Daiquiri is on me for even having to look at this one):
