Camptown races sing this song Duda, Duda. I’m targetting an OF/1B multi-pos type (maybe 2) as it gives you flexibility if one doesn’t work out. For example, if Duda, Alonso, Morse, Belt, Huff, Berkman, LaHair, etc. don’t work out as a starting 1B, their production couldn’t be worse than a third outfielder. Matching 2 OF/1B dudes is a great hedge.

Hey y’all, thanks for the comments as always. I never really thought of corey hart as a solution to the problem- I’m still not sure how likely it is that he gets the eligibility. They want to get a long hard look @ gamel once and for all.

Not a huge fan of Lehair, but he has the flyball ballpark and opportunity to prove me wrong… Part of the appeal of Lehair is the price tag, but if you’re drafting him ahead of those guys you are overpaying. I’m fine with taking him in an NL only, but make sure you wait until those higher priced guys are gone and load up on talent in the meantime. Lehair isn’t worth reaching for, IMO.

@rags in a league like that I’m probably dropping at least 50, though it depends on how deep the rest of the pool is. Still, there may not be a position situation in either the AL or the NL where the drop from 1 to 2 at a position is as steep as votto to whoever else. That is worth a pretty huge premium.

@aaron- Cuddyer is another name I kind of glossed over. He isn’t that far removed from being mixed-league relevant, so it’s def possible that he ends up as a useful 1B in this crop of talent (or lack thereof).

@birrrdy- that sucks, but hey, at least you get to provide a real life example of this column! Stay tough and hope for a miracle buddy. I like Alonso, and you can always try to trade later. Don’t go nuts trying to fill the position, but get a warm body that plays for now and let the season play out a bit.

amen on this article. I’m in an NL only keeper league without a legit 1B and I am toast at the position. Nobody left to pick from, so I was forced to make risky trades for Alonso, and Hope that Hart gets eligibility for me.

Will be bidding on Cuddyer, Lahair and Laroche in the auction. yuk!

I’ve been taking Cuddyer for 1B in mocks. He isn’t eligible for 2B in my league but he should be eligible for 1B in most leagues.

So in an NL-only auction ($260) keeper league, where morse, goldschmidt and davis are likely to be kept, what do you bid on Votto?

I’ll take LaHair before any of the lowest tier, and ahead of LaRoche, Huff and Helton. I doubt Rizzo reaches Wrigley before July.

In yahoo leagues, I would look at Corey Hart to pair with one of the younger question marks. In the absence of Fielder I think he sees 10 games at 1b by June.
