Rookie pitchers give you a roofie. Rookie hitters give you agita. So why do we keep going back for more like a guest on Montel? It’s sorta like the old joke that Woody Allen quotes in Annie Hall. We need the eggs. Besides said eggs, if a rookie somehow/someway breaks out, he’ll help you win your championship. If you draft properly in the first 7 to 10 rounds, your team will be competitive, but so should other teams. It’s what you do after those rounds that makes the difference. You’re not winning your league with Miggy in the first round, but you could with Zack Cozart in the 20th. As wonky as that sounds, it’s true. If you click on the player’s name, you’ll find whole posts and projections for each guy. It’s like Santa woke up drunk in March. Anyway, here’s some rookies to target for 2012 fantasy baseball:
Zack Cozart- Let’s see, I’ve written a rookie outlook post on Cozart, a sleeper post, he was in the shortstops to target, I mentioned him in numerous other posts…. What else do I have to say? Nothing. But the other day when the question of Daniel Murphy or Cozart came up, Rudy said Murphy, which is Rudy going with boring stability. Then frequent commenter, Simply Fred, chimed in, “Cozart is ALL (Fred’s caps, not mine) about upside. Yes, he could be in the minors. Or he could break out and give you real production that you can’t get off the FA list. Murphy is ranked #285 by Grey, 75/12/60/.275/5. Those are numbers you can get any day/all day just rotating guys from the FA. He has enough of a proven record that he has very little upside. He’s had two MCL injuries in the last two years (didn’t even play in 2010), so he has considerable downside, as well. In this instance, Cozart is the play for true upside potential. Murphy has next to no value. What, you can’t find 12 HRs and 5 SBs by running matchups on a daily basis for that position?” What Fred’s saying there (that I agree with), do you gamble a nickel to make back seven cents tops or do you gamble a nickel to make back a dollar? You go for the dollar when your investment is so low. In very deep leagues, there’s a stronger case to be made for Murphy when the next best case MI is Clint Barmes or someone dreadful.
Anthony Rizzo – At some point in the very near future, the Cubs are gonna go all rookie nookie on their fans. It may not be April 1st (fooled ya!), it may not be June 1st (Carlos Zambrano’s Birthday!), it may not even be July 1st (though I think it will be by July 1st). In deep daily and dynasty leagues, I could even see a scenario where you draft LaHair and Rizzo and wear a pink jacket and change your name to Stockard Channing. Okay, maybe not so much the end part.
Jesus Montero – A weird thing happened on the way to Opening Day. I was pretty sure everyone and their momma’s astrologer was crazy about Montero. Then he went and got himself traded to fantasy baseball Siberia and no one wants him and his no catcher eligibility. Guys and four girl readers, I still have his projections down for 55/17/70/.285 and he’ll be a catcher by the 2nd week of the season. In most leagues, you don’t keep the last man you draft so take some schmohawk catcher and leave Montero on your bench for two weeks. Or play Montero at utility for two weeks. Minus a steal or two, he’s not that different than, say, Markakis.
Tyler Pastornicky – Like Cozart, Pastornicky has an everyday job locked in. Unlike Cozart, he doesn’t have ten-plus homer power. Could little Pastornicky make a deal with the devil and hit .300, I suppose, but it seems more likely that he’s gonna struggle to hit .250. He’ll be a great flyer in NL-Only leagues, but he’s a but too risky for mixed league radars. Of course, if he hits .350 in the month of April, that’ll all change.
Devin Mesoraco – Going for Mesoraco, his bat could be Jesus Montero in a better ballpark. Going against him, Dusty. Dusty said recently, “He’s one of two (catchers, not toothpicks). Eventually, he’s going to be No. 1. There are certain guys who work better with Hanigan than Mesoraco. Now someone warm up Bailey, he only threw 150 pitches yesterday.” It would shock me if Mesoraco gets more ABs than Hanigan, but that doesn’t mean he can’t get 300 ABs and hit 16 homers. Think about Napoli when he was under the tyrannical rule of the Sciosciapath.
Bryce Harper – He’s already gone off to the minors, but he’ll be back like Matthew Lillard in Scream, but not like Lillard in The Descendants. I like Clooney, I love Alexander Payne movies, how did I not like this movie? This has confused me. It’s one of the bigger letdowns I’ve had at the movies in recent years. Big Momma’s House III, My Son’s Also A Crossdresser, however, did not disappoint.
Brett Jackson - He’ll be back by July, maybe as early as June 1st when Alfonso Soriano, Marlon Byrd and DeJesus — or the portmanteau, Alf DeByrd — finally shows its creaky joints.
Mike Trout – Just throwing him in here for keepers/dynasty leagues, I really don’t think we see him in any large capacity this year.
Matt Moore – He’ll probably win the Cy Young and be the first rookie inducted into the Hall of Fame, bypassing that whole five years after retirement mishegoss. Or at least most fantasy baseballers (<–my mom’s term) will have you believe that. No one seems at all concerned by Moore. I’m gonna on a limb and say he’s going to be great in spurts, but not overall for the whole year. What’s really odd about this whole thing is no one seems to think Moore will stumble at all. I mean, no one. Try to find a negative word about Moore anywhere on the Internet. TINSTAAPP –> There Is No Such Thing As A Pitching Prospect.

Nolan Arenado once the Rockies realize that Casey Blake is Casey Blake.
@AJ, True. I don’t think he provides a butt load of counting stats this year, but he could be good enough to shoot up the ranks in a Lawrie kinda way next year. Great call for deep keepers and dynasty leagues.
Man I laughed so hard….those posts including dusty and his pitchers are just epic. Thanks man, forget the rest, jjust cover the reds
@Moscowitz, Thanks!
I’ll make a template to save the readership some time:

Went out and drafted Mesoraco in the 21st round last night, so hoping that the Unsociable Sociapath either has an “unfortunate accident” or sees the light.
And now my buddy Fred engaging in Mets Hate Speech. And Grey endorsing it. Murph’s gonna have a break-out year! Amazin!
Grey, didn’t see Lillard in any of those movies, so missed the analogy. How does that translate for him getting to the Bigs?
@Paulie Allnuts, Didn’t see The Descendants, but in Scream he says “I’ll be right baaaack” – which is a line you’re not supposed to say in horror movies because that means you’ll be getting the ax. I’m a little ashamed of myself that I know so much about Scream… But I’m assuming Grey doesn’t think Harper’s stay in the roadside automotive service will be too long.
@Paulie Allnuts, Ha!
“Him” being Bryce Harper, of course, and not Lillard
@Paulie Allnuts, It doesn’t, I don’t think.
Good article, Grey. Your articles are always good. Thanks for doing what you do and doing it well. I never miss reading your blog during baseball season. Too good to miss.
Btw, I inquired in 1 of the forums (I forgot which 1) about my squad for this year, but neglected to give enough info about my league. I’m in a 10 team roto league (I’m the only female). Please let me know what you think of my team’s chances to win the gold.

@mauledbypandas, 12 teams! wow i need coffee
@mauledbypandas, Hitting looks awesome, pitching will be ok. Just be active on the wire early on, never know who this year’s beachy will be.
Last year first pitcher I drafted was Bret Anderson in the 10th (16 team league.) Still finished in 2nd. There’s always hope when it comes to pitching.
And poor me a cup, will you? Black.
@Chunk, thanks for the analysis. I’m hoping Milone will be this year’s Beachy. Possibly Oswalt though if he signs soon. Big disappointment with Anderson last year. I had him as well. I didn’t really intend to go quite so heavy on hitting, but people like Choo, Jennings, Butler, Heyward kept slipping. I trust that I can find pitchers better than hitters later in the season. Ended up with 6 possible closers as well, which is pretty amazing. SAGNOF!!
My team is light on power and heavy on steals. Drop Desmond for Cozart? Scary, I know…thanks!
@The Ghost of Doc Ellis, you expect cozart to upgrade your teams power stats?!
@Moscowitz, Ha! I knew that’d get me in trouble. I was just talking about Cozart over Desmond. I’ve had Desmond the past couple of years and while he’s consistent he’s also kind of blech. I was wondering if it’d be worth it to pick up Cozart and give a slight boost to power.
@The Ghost of Doc Ellis, Hold for now…

Grey or anyone, is there a good iphone app out there that manages multiple yahoo teams? and also gives alerts with breaking news (closer changes,etc.)?
@coco krispie, I haven’t found one yet. Hell, Yahoo hasn’t even updated their own app for 2012 (at least for iOS, Android’s has updated). I’d like to know if there is one out there, too.
@coco krispie, fantasy monster… it lets you access your yahoo and espn leagues on one app…
@Grey Got an offer of CC for Holliday but would have to replace Holliday with Cespedes/Boesch. Do the deal? My pitching is pretty good with Lester, Hudson, Moore, Ubaldo, Darvish, Lewis. Is there such a thing a too MUCH pitching?
@Howard, Hold
@Grey, Nice post. If I were Danny Murphy, I’d cry one lone tear. To be fair, his Yahoo position eligibility is pretty sweet and with the fences brought in at Metco, we might see a few more apples popping out of the hat. Then again, with the sort of luck the Mets have, he might contract flesh eating virus.
FYI I think Yonder Alonso deserves a mention. Kid’s got skills, even though he plays in the land that HR’s forgot. 1B isn’t so deep this year, so I think he can be pretty useful. See Ned, I didn’t say Razzball (action involving mouth) _____________
@3FingersBrown, Thanks! Ha! Yeah, Alonso’s okay, just hate Petco for hitters…
Took S Marshall round 20th closer off board, that seem about right?
@Jim, sounds about right. probably finishes the season better than 20th among rps
I blame the completely improbable plot point that someone would ever cheat on Clooney… he’s just so talented and dreamy. But actually, I haven’t seen The Descendants yet (no spoilers), so I don’t have an opinion on the movie… but I have been screaming that no one would ever cheat on Clooney since the first trailer was shown (and I’m starting to get a sore throat).
@Awesomus Maximus,
Why are you so passionate about whether or not someone would ever cheat on George Clooney? It’s a bit unnerving.
@Awesomus Maximus, But he’s detached?!
now that oswalt is getting interest from the angels and Cards, where would you pick him (if at all) in a very deep 20 team mixed league
@ajk, I wouldn’t yet…
Grey – great post. In a 10 team (25 man roster), first year keeper league where would you target these guys?
Cozart – round 15-16?
Rizzo – round 22-23?
Montero – round 11-12?
Pastornicky – round 26-27?
Mesoraco – round 21-22?
Harper – round 15-16?
Jackson – round 24-25?
Trout – round 14-15?
Moore – round 8-9?
@Adam, Thanks! Those numbers sound about right except Mesoraco, more like 22nd… Assuming you have room on your bench for Trout, Rizzo and others who aren’t up yet…
Pick a side, please!
Uggla and Kendrys
for
Altuve and J. Upton
Thanks
@Chunk, Upton and Altuve. Depends on your need for speed though.
@Sweeney, thanks and agreed. Initially I was on the upton side all the way, but as I stare at it longer it’s starting to look more even.
I think it comes down to projected at bats for Kendrys. If he was guaranteed 450 then man, I dunno
@Chunk,
Gotta play it safe here and go with the Upton side I think.
Who knows what the Sciosciapath is gonna do with a DH only candidate, 2 years removed from relevance. I can see Trumbo and Abreu stealing plenty of ABs, and that’s before taking into account Morales’ re-injury risk.
@Chunk,
uggla side .
not even close .
DLing Carpenter. Who to pick up – Stauffer, Lynn or Henderson Alvarez?
@ChuckieHacks, Stauffer
H2H, which bat do you like best for the Japan series–Smoak, Carp, Suzuki or Seth Smith? Limited moves, 1 roster spot to play with. Could keep Suzuki through week 1 while waiting for Jesus to get C eligibility, otherwise I’d have to drop the bat for another C next week.
Also, 12-team roto draft, I’d normally grab a top 1B (Votto, A. Gonzalez) where I’m picking in rd 1, but this year a LOT of top OF are being kept, such that the best available by the time my 2nd rd pick rolls around would probably be someone like Pence. Given that, would you go J. Upton in rd 1 and grab a Teixeira or Hosmer later, or stick with a 1B in rd 1 and hope that mid-tier OF are available in the middle rounds?
@Steve Stevenson, Carp… Sure, Upton’s fine as long as you get Tex…

@The Talented Mr. Dope Man, BTW, of course they are… Emoticon…
12 team 5×5 league with no bench — I have to drop one pitcher before the Japan game tomorrow. Who would you drop: Bud Norris or Greg Holland?
@MikeZ, Norris
The Rays annouced that Jeff Niemann has won the 5th starter battle in Tampa.
Last year he showed signs of breaking out, with three games of 10+ strikeouts, two of which were against Boston.
He pitches in the AL Central you say? Yea, that is tough, but he was amazing vs the Central in 8 starts last year.
5-1 with a 2.85 era, and 41 k’s in 47.1 ip (7.8 k/9) with only 34 hits and 13 walks good for a whip of 0.99
That being said, what are your thoughts on Niemann now that he’s won the 5th starter job in Tampa?
@joe from point pleasant, I wouldn’t say he pitches in the AL Central.
@L-Boogie, ESPN suffers from a Central coast bias.
@Bombo Rivera, Ha!
@L-Boogie,
Couldn’t have worded it any more perfectly Boogie! Just a typo by Bombo but that was really funny.
LOL, I meant AL East, I’m a Reds fan, so i’m used to saying central, my misake.
@joe from point pleasant, No biggy. Typos like i before e are easily ignored. But mistakes like hyping up a pitchers performance against the dreaded AL Central? Well, I just couldn’t resist.
And I’m a big Reds fan too. At least this year. Votto, Bruce and Heisey on my fantasy team.
Boesch or Hunter?
The hype around Boesch is pressuring me to pick him up. As of now, Hunter is my bench option.

Does it make sense to hold on to Cozart if I’m already rocking Dee Gordon on the ole roster? I was thinking of dropping Cozy for Fowler or David Hernandez. Yeah, neah
@ashtonkorver, Nah
I need to get rid of Brian Fuentes. Who’s the better add, Addison Reed, Edwin Jackson, or Daniel Bard?
My team is hurting for saves, with Matt Thornton and Pestano as my only RP’s.
@BobbyVCard, reed,he wont be getting any real soon though,unless your only closer is stinking,can you grab lidge for a few cheap saves maybe
@Grey/Anone: I’m in my first keeper league (16-teams) and I need to choose 5 keepers from:
Longoria
Elvis Andrus
Greinke
B Phillips
Bumgarner
Adam Jones
Heyward
Napoli
Ryan Howard
Strasburg
Ian Kennedy
These are listed by Grey’s rankings, but I’m not sure if there is any strategy (considering I don’t know who’s keeping who until the draft starts) aside just keeping your top 5 via the rankings/gut.
3 position players/2 pitchers?
Just best 5 talent?
The Napoli and first base situation (Howard) are throwing me off. I can obviously stash Howard on the DL as soon as it lets me, but it’s a deep 16-team league with way too many bench spots.
@Dad, Longoria, Andrus, Greinke, Phillips, Napoli… I’d grab another 1st baseman if possible and have Napoli catch…
@Dad,
Would help to know how long you can keep these guys, or if there’s any picks lost depending on who you keep.
But assuming you can keep these players indefinitely, at no draft pick cost, my list would be….
Longoria
Andrus
Napoli
Greinke
Strasburg
Suppose you can sub in Phillips for Napoli if you wish, but I’d rather go with Napoli of the 2. Phillips has been on a slow (but mild) decline for a while now, whereas Napoli is coming off a really dominant season. And I just prefer Greinke and Stras to Bumgarner.
@Chris,
Though I would definitely defer to Grey’s picks if there is any doubt!
Soooo… you are or are NOT a fan of me just trading Dom Brown away for Gerrit Cole in my dynasty league?! I’m happy… plus the other guy just outright dumped Dom the other day.
Grey can you give my team a looksy and let me know what you thinky?

I went a little pitcher heavy earlier than I normally would or than you would suggest but it was just how the draft unfolded. I was sitting in the 6th and really didn’t want Desmond Jennings when I already had an avg. killer like Uggla and so I decided to take the value of MadBum in that spot. As a result my OF isn’t super sexy but If Heyward can bounce back it could be solid.
@Adam, You’re too pitcher heavy… Your team is light on power and average and heavy on speed… League is very shallow though, so you can fix things in-season…
@Grey,
Thanks Grey. That’s what I felt too. I’ll likely be looking to deal a pitcher for a power bat at some point.
@Grey/Anyone:
I’m in a weird 9×7, 12 team H2H league. The extra 2 pitching categories are HRs allowed and K/9. The extra 4 hitting categories are singles, doubles, triples and OBP.

@Ryan, Although when you see Kemp, you think you gotta jump at it, but you’re losing 2 of the 3 swaps. Fielder is obviously better than Moreland. Lester is better than Anibal. And Kemp is better than Bourjos. That’s tough, I’d probably say no. But I’ll leave it up to Grey for the call.

grey,
just finished an auction draft in an 11 team league with K/BB. ended up with a solid pitching staff:
Hamels
Latos
Beachy
Tommy Hanson
Daniel Hudson
Shaun Marcum
Mike Minor
Sergio Santos
Kenley Jansen
Greg Holland
Vinnie Pestano
Koji Uehara
I share your love of middle relievers with nice strikeout rates. But as a result, Santos is my only closer right now. Do you think I should trade one of my starters for a mid tier closer? I know the value wouldn’t necessarily be great but because I have so many starters I was thinking of trading Hanson or Marcum for someone like Walden or Betancourt. Let me know what you think thanks
@ben, Don’t trade for a closer.
First time commenter. Been following the site all spring, love it.
I got the first pick tonight in a 14-team first year keeper draft. I really did not want the first pick at all. Who should I take? No Prince for Braun. More depth at OF. Suggestions please?
@Iron Mike, Thanks! Miggy…
My last 4 draft choices (and thus ending up on my bench) in a 10 team deep Roto are:
Bay
LaHair
Headley
B. Harper
Should I switch out any or all of these guys for these still available players? (position not important):
Moreland
Thames
Gamel
D. Brown
Helton
@LobBall, Thames, Gamel over Bay, Headley…

@TheNewGuy, Sounds fair…
@TheNewGuy,
i’m keeping a-gon
Jack Cust cut by the Stros. Could we have seen Cust Kayin for the last time? A sad day in Razztown.
@xopchipili, Aw…
Grey – with Chisenhall sent down today, who do I roll with at 3B in my 12 team dynasty league until HanRam gets eligibility at third and I can slide Dee Gordon in at short: Ian Stewart, Mat Gamel, Casey McGehee, Chone Figgins, Chris Davis, Mike Aviles, Danny Valencia? I was leaning Stewart.
Also with my depth issues at 3B what do you think of a Michael Pineda/Danny Espinosa for Moosetacos and Bourjos deal for me? The guy who has Moosetacos has 2 other solid 3B’s and he wants Pineda and has Utley at 2B. I’d still have Greinke, MadBum, D Hudson and Morrow as my top 4 SP’s and would use a Rickie Weeks/Aaron Hill combo at 2nd. I tried to get him to take Weeks but he hates the guy, lol.
Thanks man!
@TualatinTwoStep, Dammit! I had him in a league… Stewart’s fine… Don’t love that trade…
@Grey, yeah I had Chis in a couple leagues, super lame. If you cant beat out Jack Hananananahanahan for a job you probably just suck.
So you think I should hold Pineda?
@TualatinTwoStep, Not really, but that trade isn’t great…
Big Momma’s House…is that the one where the black guy dresses like the older, fatter woman? Or the Robin Williams one where he does coke and watches kids, on coke, and talks fast, on coke? Oh, those are so much fun! They should do an in-depth look at how they get the black guy to look like a older, fatter woman! Oh we would all watch and we would all have so much fun! How do they do that? And how do none of the characters realize that it’s not really a older, fatter woman at all, it’s a black guy!
@Wake Up, It’s the 2nd one…
Had my big $$$ league draft last night. 12 team, 5×5 roto. I started Razzin it up right after my draft last year so this is my first draft in this league since. Tell me how I did in my “rookie year”.

My team would be much better in a 0 catcher league. Took closers way too early (partner insisted). I’m also a smidge speed heavy and power hungry.
1) Other than that, how’s it looking? Best team ever, right?
2) Drop Myers for undrafted Thornton?
3) Drop Peavy and/or Volquez for upside of Lynn, Milone, and/or Henderson Alvarez?
Thanks dude.
@L-Boogie, Hold Myers… Volquez for Lynn… Team looks really solid, nice hitting and pitching, not much to complain about…
@Grey, Thanks man. You shouldn’t find much to complain about considering I based my picks on your rankings (smiley emoti-dookickey thingy).
Grey: in my 12 team h2h league, my sps are cliff lee, bumgartner, derek holland, sherzer, norris and Danks. MY RPs are a shambles, with santos, sean marshall (I had Madson go down), brett myers and Lidge. I’ve been offered Yu Darvish and Broxton for Bumgartner. What do you think?
@joel, Hold

Need a 2b/ss. Light on steals. Should I pick up Espinosa, or take a flier on Cozart?
Espinosa
I have Angel Pagan in FA and considering to drop Aaron Hill, Mat Gamel, or Mike Aviles for him. Should I drop any of them for Pagan? Or just leave Pagan in FA? The stats categories are R RBI SB TB AVG OBP. Since it has OBP, Aviles may be a liability in this league, but his multi position eligibility and being in Boston is very valuable.
