Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Went over our NL-Only team already that was also hosted by Scott White of CBS.  To refresh your memory, it was the post that you didn’t read and skipped to the comments to ask questions.  No, not that one.  The other one… Yeah, that one!  If I had my druthers, and if I were using the word druthers correctly, I’d do an NL-Only league instead of an AL-Only league.  You think NL-Only was shallow?  NL-Only makes AL-Only look downright vapid, by comparison.  To give you an idea, the best starter available on waivers right now is Vicente Padilla.  That would be great if Ugly were a category.  The best 3rd baseman available is Jayson Nix.  I’m not sure if his mom, Jayne, would even draft him.  The top five best shortstops had 5 homers combined last year.  Democratically, divvying them up one each.  If you lose a player, you’re basically done.  With that said, I wrote this post right after I drafted the team and now we’re in first place (it’s still early; I know).  Anyway, here’s our 2012 fantasy baseball team with thoughts on different draft picks:

For sake of clarity:  12 teams, AL-Only, Roto, 5 x 5 — C, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, CI, MI, OF, OF, OF, OF, OF, Util, BN, BN, BN — P, P, P, P, P, P, P, P, P, BN, BN, BN, BN, DL, DL

C – Jose Molina $3
C – Chris Iannetta $9
1B – Justin Morneau $7
2B – Alexi Casilla $9
3B – Evan Longoria $33
SS – Alexei Ramirez $21
MI – Brendan Ryan $7
CI – Mark Reynolds $19
OF – Nick Swisher $20
OF – Michael Brantley $13
OF – Eric Thames $8
OF – Nick Markakis $19
OF – Yoenis Cespedes $7 (guessing on $ amount, he wasn’t in CBS when we drafted)
U – Alberto Callaspo $4
Bench – Ryan Kalish $0 (free round)
Bench – Jarrod Dyson $0 (free round)
Bench – Jermaine Mitchell $0 (free round)

P – Justin Masterson $13
P – Brad Peacock $4
P – Aaron Crow $3
P – David Robertson $5
P – Jim Johnson $12
P – Ivan Nova  $8
P – Chris Sale $12
P – Jake Peavy $8
P – Brian Fuentes $6
Bench – Kevin Gregg $0 (free round)
Bench – Matt Lindstrom $0 (free round)
Bench – Tyson Ross $0 (free round)
Bench – Dylan Axelford $0 (free round)

ACCORDING TO EVERYONE, OUR PITCHING’S TERRIBLE

By everyone, I mean Rudy and myself too.  Our pitching staff has one ace… If the league only used Cleveland Indian players.  Yeah, not so good.  If Peavy surprises and Sale does what I think he’s capable of, then the staff won’t be the worst in the league.  Maybe only 11th worst.  Our saving grace is our hitting isn’t terrible… Only slightly bad.  (BTW, to give you an idea of how early it is in the season.  We’re in first place because of this pitching staff… HA!)

ACCORDING TO EVERYONE, OUR HITTING IS SLIGHTLY BAD

I don’t mind our outfield.  Though I think it says a lot when Nick Swisher is your most expensive outfielder.  I think, in fact, it says, “What the hell were you doing?”  Our 2nd highest get on the whole team was Alexei Ramirez.  Huh?  That’s egregious with a side of vomit.  We need about ten players to play over their head and then some luck on top of that.

IS THERE ANYTHING TO LIKE ON THIS TEAM?

After a few drafts, we decided to go all in on Oakland A’s raftee, Yoenis Cespedes.  He went for half the price he should because people were worried he wasn’t A) Starting the year in the majors.  B) Worth the hype.  C) There’s no C.  As for A), I knew Beane wouldn’t spend that kind of money to send him to the minors.  Makes no sense.  As for B), there was surprisingly no hype in drafts.  He was falling all over the place.  As for C), well, that’s self-explanatory.

MORNEAU? REALLY, GREY?  I DIDN’T KNOW YOU WERE INTO MASOCHISM?

No, Rudy’s into sado-masochism, because he drafted Morneau.  If you heard our first podcast, you already know this story.  I was on IM with Rudy and I asked him to take the controls for three minutes while I went to pee.  It takes seventeen steps from my office to the bathroom.  I counted.  I don’t draft with pants on, so I didn’t need to unbuckle anything.  I live in my own place so I didn’t need to lift the toilet seat.  I don’t even wash my hands after I pee!  In approximately three and a half minutes, I returned to see Morneau on our team.  Next time, I’m peeing out my office window.

    (link)

I’m in a $260, 4×4, 14/9, 11-team NL-only league. Draft, due to birthdays and holidays, is next weekend, the latest we’ve ever drafted.

I’m in an unusual (for me) situation. I have a solid freeze list (one team is ridiculously good, but I think I’m second-best), but my only offensive freezes are four decent-but-not-great OFers. Freezes are:

    Chris Young, $9
    Logan Morrison, $5
    Chris Heisey, $1
    Will Venable, $2
    Ian Kennedy, $7
    Daniel Hudson, $8
    Javy Guerra, $5
    Jordan Zimmermann, $6
    Brandon Beachy, $5

Unlike a complete redraft league, my freezes are going to have a huge effect on the positions of the hitters I’ll be drafting. So, how much of a positional adjustment do I make? The top seven hitters available (in positionally-unadjusted inflation $) are CarGo ($52), Votto ($50), Tulo ($48), J-Up ($48), HanRam ($41), Bourn ($40), and Zimmerman ($39). So far, I’ve just subtracted $2 from the OFers ($3 for Bourn; I don’t like expensive speedy slap-hitters: SAGNOF!) and added $2 to the other positional players. Enough? Too much? Should I do something slightly different, like cheating the $10-$25 OFers, but keeping the top OFers at inflationary par, since I don’t have a top OF? Thanks.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Since you have some OF cheaper than their price, I’d try and get a top hitter outside of OF. Could see going to $ for those infielders, wouldn’t draft Bourn for anywhere near $40, more like $25…

      • T.J. says:
        (link)

@Grey, OK, but HOW MUCH do I cheat the top- to mid-range OFers Other than Bourn)? 10% 20%? 30%? At some point, I can discount them too much, and the prices for the players at other positions get too high. $65 for Votto, $62 for Tulo, or $53 for HanRam, for example, seem like recipes for destruction. Their salaries are already inflated 30%+ before making positional adjustments.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

You have to build your team, you’re not drafting 6 outfielders just because they’re cheap…

had my first ever auction draft, would love a little perspective. It is my only team this year (3 per season prior), going to be able to keep 4 players (at +$3 draft cost). 10 team + standard positions + CI, MI, 4OF (total), 2U (total), 3 bench, 6×6 (ops + QS). $280 to spend.

    C- Posey $7, Avila $6
    1b- Tex $27
    2b- Kipnis $2, aviles $1
ss- Dee gordon $8, Jeter $6
    3b- arod $19, lawrie $22, Freese $3
OF- braun $46, bruce $25, Adam Jones $12, Melky $2, Gardner $2, Harper $4 (bench)
    SP- Lester $22, Dhudson $9, Zimmermann $10, Marcum $2, Luebke $2
    RP- Papelboner $7, Hbell $5, League $5, Walden $3

It has a slightly higher innings cap (1450 ip), so i feel a little light on starters and obviously i should have solid RP (i figured for a total of $20, those 4 should prove worth the cost). There are plenty of decent options out there due to the short benches.

i think i may try to move arod for a good starter, who should i target?

    • Grey

      Grey says:

@ETMcgee, I think you should move A-Rod for a better 2nd baseman… Team looks stacked, but it’s a very shallow league so a lot will have to do with waivers…

“For small numbers of at-bats, it is possible (though unlikely) for a player’s on-base percentage to be lower than his batting average (H/AB). This happens when a player has almost no walks or times hit by pitch, with a higher number of sacrifice flies (e.g. if a player has 2 hits in 6 at bats plus a sacrifice fly, his batting average would be .333, but his on-base percentage would be .286).”

@Grey I’m involved in a 20 Team NL Only H2H Auction tonight. Usually Im a stars/scrubs guy. But with the possibility of stars going for $60-$70 or more and the fact that $1 will end up being more like -$5 players what do you think the best draft strategy would be? I’m leaning toward stocking up on middle level offense and then maybe grab one stud SP and the rest middle relievers and some speculative save guys. (14 inning weekly min) Think that could work?

    28 man rosters so 20×28=560

In a 12 team 5×5 league with two catching spots. I am waiting on Montero to gain eligibility, and starting Iannetta and Mesoraco. Mesoraco isn’t getting any starts though. Thinking of going throwing him back. Would you pick up AJ Ellis or Josh Thole?

    Thanks,

        • @Wilsonian,

Justin Upton has been scratched from Tuesday’s lineup due to a jammed left thumb.
Upton is hoping to return to the lineup Wednesday, but is doesn’t sound like a sure thing. “It’s not too bad,” Upton said. “I went and took some swings and it didn’t feel right.

“No, Rudy’s into sado-masochism, because he drafted Morneau. Next time, I’m peeing out my office window.”

I just snagged him in my 14 team mixed (6×6; OPS and Holds) league just in case he goes all willy nilly.

    Ole.

      Kinda close…

Thinking about snagging a few day pickup to cover Phillips’ wonky hammy. Who you picking up:

Kelly Jo, the Infant, Kipnis, JWeeks?

    • 3FingersBrown says:
      (link)

@Wilsonian, Those are decent options… I’d prolly ride Infante (“who’s a big boy…” bwahaha) while he’s hot… When he’s not, take Kipnis. Weeks if you need speed.

      F K-Jo

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@3FingersBrown, Yeah, that line was hilarious. And I’m thinking I gotta go with him if it’s just going to be a few days. I definitely like Kipnis and Weeks, too. Although neither has done much in the first few games. Surprisingly, someone dumped Kipnis post draft in my 16 teamer. I had 13th waiver and still got him.

        • 3FingersBrown says:
          (link)

@Wilsonian, Damn… He’s upsidy. I wasn’t able to get him in either draft or auction leagues.

          • Wilsonian says:
            (link)

@3FingersBrown, yeah, I wasn’t targeting him, but I had to make the claim in a deep league like that even if I had Espinosa already. Went ahead and snagged Infante to ride the hot streak. I’m sure he’ll be turrible for the next few days.

            • 3FingersBrown says:
              (link)

@Wilsonian, I’m feeling Altuve. Got him off of waivers in 12 team h2h. Imp makes solid contact.

In a league that counts Saves and Holds as categories, would you drop Fautino de los Santos (OAK) at this point? He doesn’t seem to be getting much work, and even though I’m light on saves and need to speculate he is just wasting a roster spot right now. With Jordan Schafer’s 3 SBs tonight (I know, it’s against the slowest delivery in the league in Tommy Hanson) I think I might want to cut bait and go SAGNOF hunting. Thoughts?

        • 3FingersBrown says:
          (link)

@letsgobravos, The lack of control is really uncharacteristic. Apparently he had a lousy spring too. Hope it’s just mechanics… I’d love to see the score stay right where it is.

          • letsgobravos says:
            (link)

@3FingersBrown, Yeah, considering I have Cahill and Chacin on 2 teams, I’m a little worried that I invested so much in that “tier” of grey’s rankings.

            • 3FingersBrown says:
              (link)

@letsgobravos, Don’t get worried over one start. Besides, there are lots of good starters around. Neither is the sort of guy you’d feel bad dropping for a better option.

          • letsgobravos says:
            (link)

@3FingersBrown, Gives up a double and lets him advance on a freaking wild pitch. Of course that turns into a run on a ground out. Damnit.

@letsgobravos, Blech. Montero should have blocked that one better… At least I got a Guzman RBI in 15 team.

@Wake Up, true and McDowell was a sinkerballer who would go multiple innings. Very different pitchers.

  71. Steve says:
    (link)

Any chance we can get the pitcher to hit into a double-play?

    • Steve says:
      (link)

@Steve, You can’t walk the damn pitcher!

  72. Cole says:
    (link)

Justin Upton is suffering from a thumb issue, which is ironic becuase I am suffering from the same issue, although mine is Kate Upton related. Circle of life.

      @AL KOHOLIC, Perkins

  74. Steve says:
    (link)

That’s a bit more like it, Trev.

  75. Wake Up says:
    (link)

Mark Reynolds is such a terrible baseball player. I’ve never owned him anywhere and I never will. His play at 3B is just embarrassing(I know it doesn’t matter in FBB). But, seriously…go play slow pitch softball or be a professional homerun derby guy!

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@Wake Up, Yeah, kinda true… Poor Mini Donkey…

      • 3FingersBrown says:
        (link)

@Grey, Mini Donkey still gets love in OBP world… I wish I had him as a corner.

  76. jac says:
    (link)

Grey, you didn’t like that sharkidina fanboy site? An iconic fringey underachiever like Roger deserves a legend. But I had to drop the shark today for iconic party boy SAGNOF Jordan Schafer … http://mugshots.com/Sport/Jordan-Schafer.4192966.html

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @jac, Honestly, didn’t get why he was a shark… Didn’t explore it fully though…

  77. Steve says:
    (link)

I’d feel better if the D-backs could score a couple more…

    • letsgobravos says:
      (link)

      @Steve, I second that…

  78. Wake Up says:
    (link)

Mo looking back to normal…for anyone that was worried.

  79. AL KOHOLIC says:

  81. Herschel says:
    (link)

    @Grey: WEi-Yin Chen? 6 k’s, 1 bb in 5 2/3 vs the yanks…worth a stash or keep moving?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      Eh… I’d move on for now…

  82. Steve says:
    (link)

The WHIP-ing is at an end. Cahill pinch-hit for in the 7th.

    • letsgobravos says:
      (link)

@Steve, Good. I hope that’s the rockiest quality start I have all year.

    • Steve says:
      (link)

@Steve, And now I’m going to cry.

    • letsgobravos says:
      (link)

      @Steve, …and there goes our W, damnit.

  83. Steve says:
    (link)

Pretty tasty outing from Volquez, though.

    • 3FingersBrown says:
      (link)

With Wright hurt, I’m picking up Turner in my deep 15 team OBP league. Last man on the bench with 2B/3B. Started at 1B tonight… Better than The Riot. That’s quiet an endorsement.

    • 3FingersBrown says:
      (link)

@Steve, Sorry that wasn’t meant as a reply. Volquez looked solid once he settled in. J-Upside wasn’t playing though, so I’m not getting too excited.

  84. Mrobs says:
    (link)

With it only being a Pinkie… maybe Wright is a good buy low option right now??

    I may target him.

    • Long Bawls says:
      (link)

@Mrobs, Ah, but don’t forget, the pinkie bone’s connected to the…
Well, fill in the blanks, carry the 2, and you have the Mets doctors saying he’ll be ready for the weekend, meaning the weekend of August 18. Just sayin’.

      • Mrobs says:
        (link)

        @Long Bawls, August 2018? hahah

Point taken. I still think if someone was willing to part with him for pennies on the dollar. We’ll see.

        • Long Bawls says:
          (link)

@Mrobs, Hey, that would be awesome. Early in the season, so who knows; somebody just might bite.

  85. Long Bawls says:
    (link)

I see that Oakland has the AFLAC duck pitching. Guess I shouldn’t begrudge him getting work.

    • Grey

      Grey says:

      @Long Bawls, Ha!

  86. 3FingersBrown says:
    (link)

I know he’s not Jewish, but I’m still going to call Goldschmidt, “The Bear Jew.”

    • letsgobravos says:
      (link)

@3FingersBrown, LMAO….love it! Thats the leader in the club house for for the best new nickname of 2012. Human cespedes is pretty solid, but bear jew has a nice ring to it.

      • 3FingersBrown says:
        (link)

@letsgobravos, Human Cespedespede is still my favorite.

  87. jac says:

    Re Jordan Schafer

The new Astros center is not Bourgeois, he’s white trash.

    • ruah says:
      (link)

@jac, You’re right, he’s not Bourgeois, he has a starting job

  88. Real Tom says:
    (link)

Furcal or Cozart? I need to drop one.

    • AL KOHOLIC says:
      (link)

      @Real Tom, keep cozart

  89. letsgobravos says:
    (link)

Someone turn off the damn rain in Oakland. I need Broxton’s fat ass to get in for a save.

  90. ruah says:
    (link)

Have room for a hitter pickup, who you got?

    Nieuwenhuis, Ibanez, Guzman or Moreland

Also, do you see a resurgence in McGehee’s hitting this season?

    • Brian says:
      (link)

@ruah, McGehee is only starting vs. LHP and I don’t see that changing. Fine for a day but don’t expect much from him. He is a good contact hitter though.

  91. frog says:
    (link)

chipper’s back, time to drop francisco? i know he’s gonna get hurt again — it’s not a matter of if, but when. but my league doesn’t do bench spots..

  92. Raja says:
    (link)

Ike Davis and Goldschmidt are available in my league, you like either one more than my Lind?

  93. Hats for Bats says:
    (link)

@Grey – I watched Niewenhies bat today and he looked solid. Let A LOT of pitches go for balls. Fluke Lidge deflection robbed himof a hit. What is your takeon his major league role? I’m assuming he’s in til Torres is back?
