We at Razzball realize that exporting our views across the country has damaging consequences on the blogosphere. To help make amends, we are reaching out to leading team blogs and featuring their locally blogged answers to pressing 2011 fantasy baseball questions regarding their team. We feel this approach will be fresher, more sustainable, and require less energy consumption (for us anyway). The 2011 Pirates Fantasy Baseball Preview comes courtesy of Where Have You Gone, Andy Van Slyke.
1. Not sure how it happened but I’m actually excited about quite a few Pirate hitters this year. Let’s do some over/under’s. 1) Andrew “The Dread Pirate” McCutchen: 20 homers, 40 steals. 3) Jose “Does My Last Name Rhyme With Ciabatta Or What?!” Tabata: 35 steals. 4) Pedro “The Arghuably Great Pirate Prospect” Alvarez: 25 homers. 5) Ronny “Hey, At Least I’m Not Jack Wilson” Cedeno: .220 average, .221 OBP.
I hope you’re ready for some weasley politician-like equivocating, because that’s what I’m about to give you. I certainly think that Andrew McCutchen is capable of hitting both those numbers, but I think they’re probably the upper echelon of what he’ll do in 2011. He struggled a ton in July and some in August with a shoulder injury and that put a bit of a damper on his numbers last year, but 20 homers for a righty in PNC Park? Maybe, but I think he’s still a year away from where I’d feel comfortable guaranteeing that. I’m looking for more in the 15-17 range. And we all know the guy can fly, but he kind of put the breaks on last year after swiping 10 in April. What was that all about? Will it continue with Clint Hurdle? Honestly, I have no idea. I’d guess he’ll probably end up somewhere between 35-40 steals this year.
Likewise, Tabata can fly, but how often does he get the green light if he bats leadoff with McCutchen behind him? Or second with ‘Cutch already on base and Walker and Alvarez coming up? Tough question. I’d guess he comes up just a bit short of 35, but again, he’s definitely capable of it.
I feel better about saying Alvarez will go over 25 homers. They call the guy “El Toro” for a reason. He can absolutely crush the ball and when he’s on, he’s out of his mind. He’ll still strike out a ton this this year, but I’m hoping for just a bit more consistency and over a full season, I’ll say he clears 25.
For Ronny Cedeno, I’m creating a new statistic. I’m calling it, “Number of Roger Dorn Style Olés That Make Me Wonder if Ronny Cedeno Is Awake and Ask ‘How Bad Could Pedro Ciriaco Be?’” I’m putting the O/U at 12 NoRDSOTMWiRCIAaASHBCPCBs. I’m taking the over.
2. People look at James McDonald’s September (2.31 ERA, 30 Ks in 35 IP) and they get excited. What do you expect of him this year?
Let’s be honest here; I’m a Pirate fan and I don’t get my hopes up for pitching. Kris Benson, Oliver Perez, Kip Wells, Ian Snell, Tom Gorzelanny, etc. etc. etc. I also want to point out that his HR/FB rate was awfully low with the Pirates for a guy that’s a generally a flyball pitcher and he’ll probably give up a few more longballs in 2011. That being said, it’s hard not to like the guy. His fastball/curveball is an excellent 1-2 punch and he had some success with his changeup in a few starts with the Pirates. Control is an issue worth keeping an eye on, but I think the strikeouts are real and I think the Pirates are on to something here.
3. Garrett Jones set the world aflame in 2009 with 21 homers and 10 steals in 2009. Even garnered himself a nickname, Robot Jones. Then 2010 happened and he hit .247 with 21 homers and 7 steals in almost twice the number of ABs and people scurried. Or got scurred, if Chingy is reading this to you. Can Robot, um, reboot in 2011 or is he not going to see any time vs. lefties, ceding to Matt Diaz?
Oh man, you guys call him Robot Jones? We call him Garrett F—-n’ Jones, or GFJ for short, which works both ways. When he was on his unreal tear in 2009 it was “Garrett F—-n’ Jones does it again!” and when he fell apart in the second half last year it was, “Oh man, Garrett F—-n’ Jones is up. We’re screwed.” But can he rebound in 2011? I don’t honestly think he’ll get a chance to and I’m OK with that. Even during his unreal 2009, his OPS against lefties was .698. Last year it was an abysmal .621. He’s going to platoon with Matt Diaz and I think that’s the way it should be. Jones isn’t awful, but he just shouldn’t be playing every day.
4. I purposely left Neil Walker off the over/under’s because I have other bones to pick with this young brother. Let’s go into what I said in the top 20 2nd basemen for 2011 fantasy baseball post. “…I don’t fully trust Walker and his BABIP was on the lucky side and his walks weren’t great and his Ks weren’t either…” Run-on sentence aside, what’s your take on what I had to say? Are you nervous Neil Walker’s 2011 is going to be a disappointment like Jones’ 2010?
I’m actually kind of optimistic that Walker will be able to avoid Jones’s slide, if only because he’s quite a bit younger at 25. He seemed to be figuring out Triple-A and generating a good walk rate and having good at-bats early in 2010 and he matured quite a bit as a hitter over the course of the season with the Pirates. Matt Bandi at Pittsburgh Lumber Company wrote quite a bit about this after the season. I’m not going to go out and predict that he won’t struggle at all in 2011, because I think he probably will at points, but I do think that the power that he flashed with the Pirates last year (29 doubles and 12 homers in 110 games) is legitimate. I don’t know that he’ll ever be a “walk ever 10 plate appearances” kind of guy, but I do think he has a chance to be a pretty good hitter, especially for a second baseman.
5. When you Google “Last Pirates Winning Season,” it asks you, “Did you mean Pirates Losing Seasons?” Last year, they lost the third most games in a season for a Pirate club, trailing only the teams of 1952 and 1890, when I believe there were actual pirates playing on the Pirates. So that brings me to my question, why not let the American League fans run the team? The American League fans have managed a 12-1 record in the last thirteen All-Star games. That’s better than the Pirates management!
Well, as you’ve mentioned, the Pirates do have a pretty interesting crop of young hitters right now and they have a lot of pitching talent in the minors, though much of it is on the lowest rungs. It seems weird to say since they’re coming off of a 105-loss season, but I think the Pirates are in a better place right now than they have been in quite some time. That said, it certainly looks like GM Neal Huntington is on the hot seat this year and for all I know ownership will fire him and bring someone in to enact an “Ed Wade Win Now” run and ruin everything. If that happens, I’ll probably start a Durham Bulls blog, or something.

But I love Razzball’s mix of wit and intelligence.
Fantasy Razzballers everywhere are on their knees praying that Cedeno gets to play every day.
Grey (and anyone else who wants to comment):
First time playing FBB. My league is H2H, with 6 offense categories and 6 pitching categories. whoever wins the most categories for the week wins. Pitching categories are pretty basic: Ws, Ks, ERA, WHIP, SVs and least HRs allowed. MY QUESTION: I know that generally its not good to take pitchers early, but inthis H2H format, does it make sense to take a stud pitcher (or 2)early? What round should I target for my first pitcher?
Oh those Battling Bucs.
LOTS of Fantasy Razzball pitchers on this team.
Grey & Co., took place in the NFBC 12 team Live Event yesterday and came away pretty happy. Felt like it was definitely Grey/Rudy influenced. Thoughts

These are from the previouis post:
@Grey: and one more Espinosa question… like him over Chris Johnson for a bench spot when you have Hill at 2B and Raburn and Kendrick in the UTIL spots?
Sorry, I know I’ve been on this Espinosa crap all day. I’ve been on the road and have been trying to catch up on my leagues via cellphone only for the past week. So many apologies.
Also, if I wanted to use Rasmus to target a pitcher, who (or what tier) should I target?
I’m in an NL Keeper Auction (260) with the following keepers:
I have excellent keepers – Lince, Kerhsaw, Tulo, JUp, Kemp, LoMo, CarGo and Krispie – all significantly undervalue.
It is a deep league and we can keep 8. I have an offer on the table in which I give Krispie and get McGehee and Storen. I would trade Storen and keep McGehee. I’m considering this trade because there aren’t many 3B available in the draft (maybe Wright, Aramis, Sandoval, and then it drops off to Headley et al.) I would have McGehee for $14 as opposed to paying $40 + for Wright or $30 + for Aramis or Sandoval.
Should I consider this trade? It would free up money for me to invest in closers….of which there will be few.
i’ve got McCutchen, Tabata, and Alvarez on one of my teams. Never thought I would be watching Pirates games with anything on the line. Should be interesting.
@mauledbypandas – I thought the Pirates are only covered on Radio and have 162 game blackout on TV
12 tm mixed roto. I’ve had this happen in a couple of mock drafts, where I get Miggy in the first round, then have a choice between A-Rod or Kemp. Who would you rather have in the second round? I like the idea of getting a top 3B early, but Kemp is so tempting…
grey, i know i posted before, but
if i go into draft with miggy/longo/votto/agonz/heyward/hamels (1b, 3b, of, 2 util, sp)
can you rank who would you draft in our 1st (which is actually 7th round?) meaning – given my players, who would you pick?
scherzer, victorino, ellsbury, lind, hill, oswalt
thanks man.
lind has OF elig. thanks
Has anyone ever been to a Pirates game? Beautiful park, seriously.
On the other hand, continuing a drunken conversation from last night with two good friends, at least I considered them good friends since I had just met them 20 minutes earlier and they were drunk and I was drunk, so we were best of friends. Anyway, it had to do with predictions, prognostications and projections, well I tried to include projections(baseball stats, not Freudian faults) because I am in complete fantasy baseball mode until my main draft is done and I believe that there is a way to work in fantasy baseball to every conversation. Some say that a prediction should be backed up with a sound argument, supporting facts and criteria, you know, basically build your case. I say, I don’t care about how you arrived at your prediction. If I am going to you to tell me what is going to happen, all I care about is, did it happen or not? It is not who built the best case at the beginning. It is who was right at the end! Thoughts?
@Mr Baseball: My schtick detector just blew up, so I dunno. If I cant watch with MLBTV I guess I wont be seeing them. Sometimes that is for the best though.
Also, I know it is just spring training, but maybe Beckett is worth a potential late-ish roung flyer? ESPN has him ranked horribly low.

My opinion is: Low on average, possibly weak on power, but pretty nice pitching.
I personally believe that GM Neal Huntington has done a fantastic job building his minors, much like Dayton Moore. Hard to see progress when the team was abysmal before he got there. If their pitching in the low minors can pull through, their farm system rankings will skyrocket.
@chata: I always thought that Brian guy had good taste.
@Steve: Ha!
@Joel: I wouldn’t change my H2H strategy for that format.
@DonSlaughtOnslaught: Yup
@Nate Marcum: Team looks solid. As I’m sure you know neither of us are fans of Ichiro. Not even really sure why you would take him for that team either since you don’t have an abundance of average killers.
@Wilsonian: Yeah
@Wilsonian: I’d want a number one, say Hamels tier, but you’re probably not going to get that. He’s worth more to you.
@J: I wouldn’t.
@mauledbypandas: Yeah, no kidding.
@Mr Baseball: Ha!
@Kazmere: I have Kemp slightly above A-Rod, but it’s kinda tomato-tomahto. If you like filling your 3rd base spot, go for it.
@wilsoniam: Ellsbury, Victorino, Hill… Can’t go wrong with any of them.
@Wake Up: You sound like you’re still drunk. That’s okay, so am I. The beauty of this is you don’t know the end yet.
@mauledbypandas: If you want to take a flyer with him as your 5th SP, go for it. I’m not touching him.
@Sean A.: Your hitting is a bit of a mess because you took Bell and Weaver when you were fine with Johnson and waiting until Valverde. Average, power and speed is going to be poor.
feliz is the scheduled starter , today , vs the mariners .
how far will they let him go ?
@Grey: Once again your wisdom shines through. Just watched Beckett fall apart yet again. Still spring training, but I agree, I don’t want the junk in that trunk.
@chata: they said 5 innings i believe. Still think he ends up in the pen this year, but they are supposed to decide on a tentative rotation very soon.
Cryin’ Brian has a boo-boo….
http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/03/19/brian-wilson-has-mild-oblique-strain-opening-day-in-doubt/
@Grey: Ha. I was a little. But, I think you know what I’m talking about. If a Sabermetrician uses every stat in the book to forecast how well player X will be this year and player X bombs, I don’t care how sound the argument was. Player X bombed, that’s what I care about. And if the old one-eyed guy at the horse track tells me that he has a hunch that player Y is going to have a great year and he does. Then, I’m happy that he was right. I don’t care that he didn’t support it with facts. He was right. That’s what I care about.
@Grey: thanks re: Espinosa.
Re: Rasmus – there are 3 diehard STL fans in my league and I was thinking of making them an offer, but didn’t know what should be a legitimate target. Thanks, dood.
Grey, I know you have the man crush on Mike Minor, but do you like him better than Derek Holland?
@Wilsonian: Oswalt sounds about right
This Pirate blog hasn’t been posted before? Obviously I’m Wrong or someone would have mentioned it here in the comments, but I could swear I read it like a month ago. In fact I wrote notes about it all over my body so I would remember.
Feliz’s line for todays game.
5 IP | 4 H | 2 ER | 3 K | 2 BB | 72 pitches, 42 strikes
Not terrible, still hope he stays in the pen this year.
Grey: thanks. I guess what I’m asking is, having read your stuff it looks like wait on a pitcher till the 5th round or so. Is that in both H2H and rotisserrie, or are pitchers really more valuable in H2H than Rot.?
Wilson has a strained oblique.
Or something like that.
20 team 5×5. I have more than enough average and I’m a little light on steals. Would you trade Ichiro and Masterson for Rajai Davis and Belt? Thanks a ton.
@Mr. Neutron: That’s not good.
@Wake Up: Yup
@Carl Spackler: Yup
@Giant JJ: Not unless February Grey snuck it through when I wasn’t looking.
@Joel: Less:
http://razzball.com/head-to-head-fantasy-baseball-draft-strategy/
@Giant JJ: Nope
@Grey: I can live with that since the draft played out strangely. I agree on taking too many pitchers in the 7-9 rounds, but there were no hitters left that I liked that weren’t a huge reach at that point. Only real regret was not taking Krispie in Round 8 and/or Tabata in Rounds 11-14.
Disagree with you that my speed will be bad, but Avg and Power are possible (at least the power has upside though, Average is just going to be a mess).
@Carl Spackler: Grey says Minor COULD be top 20 SP by end of year. Holland unranked. Dude, what are you on?
@simply fred: Sorry, hadn’t updated my browser and hadn’t seen Grey’s “yup.”
@Grey: Dude, I totally screwed myself at SS waiting till the very end to draft Alcides Escobar….Please Help!

Scutaro, Marco
Escobar, Yunel
Bartlett, Jason

Hey Grey,
12 team 5 keeper league 6×6 with OBP, SLG and Holds
We only do 15 rounds because the last 5 rounds stink, and waivers make them more fun.
My keepers were Teix, McCann, Werth, and Krispie. I got a supplemental pick for my fifth keeper, which I turned into Hamels. I’m starting a little bit behind, but I think I did pretty well.

Johnny Cueto made another early exit from a start on Saturday.
hey Chum , sorry for your loss (wainwright) .
still , your keepers are elite .
here’s a good one: in our H2H league, on Yahoo, we have to pick not just 3 OFs, but a LF, CF and RF. Carlos Gonzalez is eligible at all three positions. How much does that flexibility ramp him up the rankings for my particular league? could it vault him into the top 3-5, above Braun who is just a LF?
Grey,
Only reason I took Ichiro was pure value. Got him in the 8th round and wanted to offset Dunn. At the time is was the right move, IMO, but being able to get some of the players later (tabata, manny, etc) could have spent that pick on maybe a different OF. Thanks for the feedback. Lets hope Ichiro decides to start hitting bombs….
My latest “real”,,,uh, umm….”fake” team includes N.Walker, J.Tabata, A.McCutchen, and J.Hanrahan. Yes, I’m a 52 year old 47 year long Pirate fan. ESPN, 10 team 5×5 H2H. Am I doomed?

The War Room snake drafts have been updated to the Top300.

13+_team: http://razzball.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Fantasy_Baseball_War_Room_12_Plus_Teams.xls
BTW: If you want to tabulate cat totals for your team, the War Room can do that quickly for you. Just go to the players tab. The owner’s column has team ‘a’ already available in the dropdowns. Just go to each player on your team and assign the ‘a’. Then if you go to the War Room page, you will see all of the cat totals.
This is an easy way to change out individual players to ‘balance’ your team.

18 teams ROTO – AUTO DRAFT – I had 17 draft spot
number 2 on waiver wire – 18 team auto draft is a tought draft
Looks like I am short on Holds – but anyway do I use my waiver spot – or wait and see what gets dropped – The league is solid so I am pretty much sure what is left will be taken on wiavers – or maybe I can come up with cheap Holds later – I would guess after waivers I would have around 12th spot if I use it

You know grey drafting CoCo Crisp is not like drafting the other The Notorious B.I.G – Hitter Josh Hamilton who is always hurt and is drafted in round 1 or 2 – CoCo comes really cheap and these are the players that you take a chance on for cheap speed that can make a difference – its not like he is a pitcher that might end up going to visit Dr Freeze this year
come on grey – Men’s Health magazine interviews Coco Crisp this year that has to mean something – true story
MH: You’ve missed a lot of time due to injury over the past two years—especially last year, when you sat out half the season. Are you finally healthy? And how have you prepared to bounce back with full strength this season?
CC: Last year I had two shoulder surgeries leading into the offseason, and I didn’t even have the opportunity to have a normal workout. Even when I ran last year, my shoulders were sore. So it was strictly just rehabbing to make sure my shoulders were right enough to play during the first game of the season. And then these finger injuries happened. I still didn’t get a chance to really play hard during the season. But this year, I don’t have to worry about my shoulders or my pinky or anything else I’ve had in the past, so it’s a completely different story
MH: I know you’re trying to hit for more power this season. How has that been reflected in your workouts?
CC: I was able to put on a few more pounds this offseason through strength training. Now you don’t want to go too crazy with adding weight, because then you’ll lose some of your speed.
so whats the word on neftali? closer or starter?

@Wake Up: I have to disagree, unless I’m misunderstanding what you mean by “caring about” the predictions. The value of predictions is their ability to be successful over time. If the predictions are right because the variables the predictive system considers are causal, then randomness has less power over the results than if the variables are not causal. Someone’s “gut feelings” could go through periods of great success, but they have no more likelihood of being successful in the future than a number coming up when I roll a die.
Though this news is only relevant to deep- leaguers and NL-only managers, Brent Morel has won the 3B job for the White Sox. Those who punt CI until the very end could find this useful as well.
Kind of an Ian Desmond lite. 50/12/60/270/5 looks like a reasonable line for 2011.
***ATTENTION***
Razzball Commenter League #5 drafts tomorrow night at 9:30ET, and there is one spot that needs to be filled.
Email me at hennb517@robertmorris.edu to fill the last spot!
@Eddy: Jeremy Affeldt and Sergio Romo, situational… David Hernandez…
@Rick Dempsey: Saito
@thewiz: Too heavy on speed and light on power. Pitching looks better than it needs to be.
@KCC26: 12 teams, 3rd to 4th…
@Ozzie: Sure on Andrus, Minor and Zimmermann… Boo-ya.
@Mr Baseball: Light on speed but the team looks solid. Pitching looks real nice. I’d hold right now with those waiver wire choices.
@Mr Baseball: If Coco could definitely start 150 games, he’d be great.
@Tony: Is there final word yet?
@magicterp: Team’s hitting looks solid for NL-Only. Pitching looks solid. Don’t love punting anything.
@Child Please: 9 or 10
@PMAC: Thanks for the kind words! How many teams?
@Eddy: Thanks for the heads up!
I don’t want to bore you fine people with my lineup, but I do have quick question for Grey; 12 team league just drafted, I have waiver 6….would you use it on Jon Rauch or hold onto it for later? (I think the Francisco owner will W him I wait for waivers to clear)
@Grey: What is the scale of your responses (“Ha!”, “hehe”, “Ha”, “Ha, that’s awesome!”, etc.) and is there a page on the site that references the scale? Thanks!
@Eng: Great Rauch if you need saves.
@Bill Lumbergh: Hehe, Ha, Ha!, Ha, that’s awesome… From weakest to strongest. I should do a page that explains commenting and how I don’t look at old comments and the hierarchy of Ha’s.
What is the closer situation in Toronto? Frank or Rauch?
@Steve: It’s Francisco if he’s healthy, which he is not as of right now. Doesn’t sound serious but Rauch if a good handcuff. (Dotel is also ailing slightly.)
@Grey: I always thought “ha” was prior to “hehe”. “Ha” without an exclamation point just seems so sarcastic.
@royce!: Hehe is patronizing, ha is okay, kinda funny but I’m not actually laughing…
GREY – 12 teams, Head 2 Head Points
@Grey: Interesting. I thought of it as describing a true chuckle. But I do remember having seen you use hehe in situations which I didn’t think a chuckle was merited. I suppose I just wrote it off as you having questionable taste. Kidding!
“Muhahaha” is still villainous, right? I hope to use that a lot this year, especially from the top of the standings in my RCL. Also in court.
@PMAC: Your team is weak on hitting while not dominant in pitching. Better on pitching, just not dominant where you can spare SPs. Your weak on average and speed, which isn’t terrible. This is assuming you actually gave me your starting lineup, I have no idea if all 4 MIs are starting for your team.
@royce!: Yeah, Muahahahaha is villainous, for sure.
@ Grey
I know I should reach for someone that I really want on my team this year. But how early is too early for Marcum? His ADP in Yahoo leagues is 117. I have seen him go as early as the 7th round and is usually gone by the 8th in most mocks I have done. Is there any value for him in these rounds?
Hey Grey
What do you do when selecting your first SP in a draftÉ (that E looking thing is supposed to be question mark, something wrong with my keyboard).
Do you wait for a certain round and select best one available or do you have 1 or 2 you try and getÉ
@Chicago Mike: Don’t love that he’s having a start skipped because of his shoulder, so I wouldn’t reach past 117 for him at this point. There’s value for him in the 7th round, assuming a 20 team league.
@Don: http://razzball.com/2011-fantasy-baseball-draft-prep-pitchers-pairings/
thanks for link
As a Padres fan, I am hesitant to write this, but this is good anecdotal evidence of both the weight of spring training numbers and the fickleness of AVG: Padres have the second highest AVG in baseball right now.
Thanks Grey.
Same question for Lester his ADP 39. Seen him go 30th overall. Value there?
@Grey
Last night I drafted at #5 in a 10 team standard ESPN league with guys from my work, I decided this will by my “Razzball” team. I drafted entirely based on your top 300 (modified based on ESPN’s ADP) and came up with a team I thought you could get behind.
This is my first year doing an ESPN league, and I may have waited too long on my MIF slot, but here is the team that I ended up with, that ESPN projects to finish dead last (10/10) in the league. Is there something I’m missing? Any glaring weaknesses?

Anyways, bad news: Peavy shut down for today for sure with what he believes as rotator cuff tendinitis.
I got him on three teams so far, so it’s kind of a bummer.
@Grey: Please share some of your expert advice for keepers.
I’m in a 5×5 13 team keeper league.

S. Figgins
Thanks,

Brent Morel won the starting 3B gig for the Chicago Whitesox. Watch list worthyÉ
@Don: No problem.
@royce!: Yeah, means nothing.
@Chicago Mike: Nope
@Howie Met Your Mother: You didn’t wait too long, Espinosa is a good flyer. Team looks really stacked overall, good balance of speed and power. Pitching looks great too, nice team.
@Eddy: Bummer indeed. That’s hilarious is the best.
@Joel: Marcum and Figgy, but your keepers aren’t great.
@Don: Bleh

I left 44 dollars on the table and should have really went higher on McCutcheon but, I think this is a fairly solid team. Except, I have like 4 2nd basemen. Your thoughts?
Speaking of the Bucs, what’s the latest on Hanrahan/Meek closing situation? What’s your over/under on the number of saves Meek gets this year?
10 team 5×5 h2h. How many SP would you draft to fill the 5 backup rounds?
Interesting news for MR. Bs everywhere – Neshek has been claimed off waivers by the Padres…
this from cbs sports :
“Utley still not testing knee: Chase Utley took ground balls on Sunday, but he did so while sitting on a stool. While the Phillies’ second baseman told CSNPhilly.com that he is “moving in the right direction,” he is still not putting pressure on his injured right knee. Utley is trying to avoid surgery, treating his knee primarily though stretching and exercises. There is still no timetable for his return to game action.”
no mention whether it was a 3-legged stool or 4 .
but in utley’s case . perhaps more is better .
the up-shot of this is that , with the start of baseball only 11 days away ,
i’m forced to significantly down-grade ryan howard , to , perhaps , the
7th or 8th best 1st bman … depending on dunn , and maybe even youk .
i can’t afford to wait until after my drafts to make this determination .
are you still ranking howard at # 4 ?
that’s a pretty crapolancastic line-up that he has surrounding him .
Anyone know Lind has the 1B job in Toronto or will he be DH’ing every few games?
@Grey: Thanks for the update. He has a sore pec, but apparently is getting a second opinion from Dr Freeze…

@Child Please: Doesn’t look like you have room.
@Wilsonian: Pick up dlR and Kennedy…
@Eddy: Thanks for the heads up!
@vottomatic: Team looks solid, not sure what kind of competition you have when you can leave 44 dollars on the table and get that team though.
@Schmohawks Bob: 12 saves for Meek over/under.
@giantJJ: 3
@Steve: Thanks for the heads up!
@chata: I’m not changing him.
@Bill Lumbergh: Primary DH
@longbeachyo: This doesn’t seem like a team I’d advise you to draft so not sure what you mean. Hitting doesn’t look good and the pitching looks too good which is the opposite of what you want in H2H.
@anarchy burger: You ranked them.
@Grey: Asked this in the forum in relation to my 12-team H2H league that counts holds. Would you drop Dotel for Ogando? Ogando seems likely to close if Feliz moves to the starting rotation. And even if Feliz stays in the ‘pen, Ogando would be getting Holds…
wow. this site rules. i’m buying some daquiris
@Grey: thanks! Is DLR healthy? I’d heard he had some kind of issue with his side or something? I’m kinda surprised you didn’t say Minor.
@Steve: Answered there.
@anarchy burger: Thanks!
@Wilsonian: Not sure what you want me to say, none of these pitchers should be on waivers. You have my SP rankings. Is Minor above dlR?
@Grey: Consider yourself thanked here – and there.
@Grey: tiny league (8 teams) which is why they’re there. I was mainly just wondering about DLR because I’d heard he was slightly injured and that is why I thought you’d say Minor over him. Many apologies.

@Chunk: I’d usually say the pitching is too strong here, but the hitting looks fine, so, yeah, the team oes look stacked. Well played.
@yanks4life: Yeah, the team is stacked. Doesn’t hurt the keepers you have. You’ll definitely have a top hitting team
Utley Insuraance? Castillo set to sign with Phillies…
‘insurance’, even.
Grey i drafted logan morrison in a h2h as a bench OF….if im light on speed, keep him b/c hes valuable anyway? Or drop for borbon or coco crisp?
thanks,
@grey: who is the closer in seattle?
drafting now, thanks!!!
anyone? closer in seattle…..?
@Steve: Makes sense.
@wilsoniam: Keep him for now.
@Tony: League’s filling in for Aardsma for the next month.
12-team 7(H, K)x 6(H), non-keeper, 22 players per team, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OFx3, 2 UTIL, 7P, 5 Bench
How do you adjust your rankings to prepare for this draft? Is there a cut off for Ks where you could pair players like there is with WHIP?
what is up with aardsma if you can remember? if you have the option of one or the other who you taking? AARDSMA?
@Tony: Had hip surgery in January.
If you want saves right away, League. Aardsma’s a decent DL stash/handcuff, obviously.
@Steve: And if you count Holds, League will go from contributing in one category to contributing in another once Aardsma comes back.
shit aardsma is gone, league is there, might be able to use then deal to an unknowing suspect….
no holds…. who has the TB job? not much left lol, reaching for nuggets here, mcgee?
@Tony: Probably Farnsworth and then McGee, but a lot of talk from Maddon about using a committee.
Grey and Steve: thanks for the help, most of those guys went right before i went to snag them anyways!
Grey- can you check my squad out and comment, its in the forum, labeled “Trophy Tony’s draft” first section of the forums…… thanks man! So glad baseball is about to begin!
@Child Please: Your league is shallower than this: http://razzball.com/winning-your-fantasy-baseball-league/ so amp the numbers up a bit.
@Tony: Cool, will look.
Doing slow on-line draft (12 team, mix, keeper) and am up to the 9th round. I can get Utley, though I already have Phillips, so Utley would be Util. Should I take Utley, or go for a 3B (Reynolds, Young, McGehee, Alvarez) or 3rd OF (Rasmus, Granderson, BJ Upton, Gardner, Stubbs though some should get picked before my turn)? I am thinking take Utley in 9th and whoever is left at 3B in the 10th. Thoughts? Thanks.
Here’s my Commenter league results, give it to me straight Dr. Grey:

@Grey:
What side do you want in an OBP league:
Matt Kemp
Justin Verlander
Rd.10 pick
for
Adam Lind
Jake Peavy
Ian Kennedy
Rd.5 pick
Is it fair or lopsided?
@Grey: Is there a cut off for Ks where you could pair players like there is with the 1.25 WHIP?
@Grey: Ks for Hitters*
@Grey:
Btw, why the omission of the “Fucking your step-sister” term? Strong slang? Perhaps changing it to “Screwing..” would be better?
That term was one all of us could relate with so well. I’d hate to see it gone forever.
@Atomic: Too many good names on the board, wouldn’t take Utley there.
@Wilsonian: You look pretty light on power. There’s a chance no one in your outfield tops 22 homers. And only one guy did it last year.
@Eddy: It’s not fair.
@Child Please: Nope
@Eddy: Not sure what you mean. Is it no longer in the glossary?
@Grey: yeah, I was thinking that, as well. I just kept finding myself without a power option. Took Hanley with the 2nd pick and it seemed like every time it got back to me, there wasn’t any power left (or it had just been drafted).
@Grey: any other (big) issues you see?
@Grey:
‘Tis not.
And are you leaning toward the Kemp side?
@Wilsonian: No, but that’s a big issue. Kershaw would’ve been fine, you didn’t need Gallardo.
@Eddy: Yeah, it’s not close.
@Grey: yeah, hopefully I end up with a ton of 20+ HR guys and it can get me decent points. I’ll be the first to admit the Gallardo pick wasn’t great. I shoulda stopped at Kershaw.
Bit of a content management FAIL on Yahoo right now. In the ‘Top MLB Headlines’ section on my league homepage:
# Peavy plans on being in White Sox rotation
# White Sox RHP Peavy shut down, tendinitis likely
Snigger.
I am pissed you gave credit to Big Jgke for the Biggie Smalls definition of fatguys with no power. i was looking thru the razz dictionary and realized that. if u look at the comments on ur post of asking wat guys like that shud be named, i clearly said biggie smalls.
I have the opportunity to grab Rauch. Drop any of these guys for him? Dotel, Arnoldis, Kuo, Hensley
I have a keeper question. In my shallow (9 team MLB) keeper league I need to figure out who I want to keep (up to five) before our auction next week. At the auction, we each have $260 to spend minus the cost of our keepers. I know I should keep Kinsler at $6, Morneau at $10, and Mauer at $15 for a total of $31. After that, though, I don’t have any obvious bargains for the two remaining spots.
I could keep J. Reyes for $26, but that seems unlikely to be much below auction value, if at all. I know that Longoria and Zimmerman will both be kept by other managers, so I’m tempted to keep Wright so I don’t get locked out of the good 3Bs, but at $36 I’m worried that would limit me too much in the auction. I could also keep some pitchers (an appealing option since many of the best pitchers – Felix, Lee, Halladay – will be unavailable), but my two best options (Lincecum at $25 and Lester at $21) are both a bit pricier than I’d like in a keeper. Who, if anyone, would you recommend keeping with my 4th and 5th keeper spots, or would I be better off saving my money for the auction?
Interesting post as always, Grey. I’m a little surprised nobody mentioned Pirates’ management’s plans to hijack a freighter hauling Jeter bobbleheads from China off the Horn of Africa. As I understand, doing this was an integral part of their rebuilding program for this year.
@Steve: Those Yahoos.
@Mike from Jersey: Don’t have to be pissed, just point out the error.
@Kazmere: Kuo
@friar: Wright at $36 is fine, Lester at $21 is fine too.
@Long Bawls: Ha
Thank you for the fix
Hey Grey,
quick question:
Ive received an offer:
Aardsma & Cahill
for
Beckett & Chris Perez (My team)
What do you think? Should i pull the trigger? I originally offered Beckett for Cahill but this is a keeper league and my counterpart is not budging… Ive compared Aardsma and Perez and they seem similar however Aardsma is on DL uptill about May. I am getting rid of Beckett which I’m trying to do without having to just drop him. Any insight would be great! Thanks!!
