2009 Baseball Predictions
I think I’m approximately six weeks late on this, but if you read Razzball daily (of course you do, you reader, you!) then you’ve read before some, if not all, of these predictions. So what now? Read them again. They won’t hurt you. Plus now that I’ve put all of my ‘preseason’ predictions in one place, we can look back at this later in the year and laugh. Oh, and we will laugh. Who’s your NL MVP? Soriano? Oh, you do kid, Grey. You do! Anyway, here’s my predictions for baseball’s post-season awards and whatnot:
AL Pennant Winner – Tampa Bay Rays. I really didn’t want to pick the defending AL champions because that’s lame, and I made a resolution to be unlame this year. Alas, I went through each AL team’s pitching staff and the Rays were the choice.
NL Pennant Winner – Los Angeles Dodgers. Their lineup wins the division with ease then in a playoff series their pitching can beat the Cubs and Mets.
World Series Champion – Los Angeles Dodgers. I’ve never been to a World Series game and would like to go. Thank you!
AL ROY – Travis Snider. I wanted to call this guy Travis Lind. Weird!
NL ROY – Dexter Fowler. I think he’s a top 30 player by 2011. Wave of the future… Wave of the future…
AL Cy Young – Josh Beckett. The Sawx will give him a chance for 20 wins and he can do the rest.
NL Cy Young – Chad Billingsley. You didn’t think I was going to pick Joel Pineiro, did you?
NL MVP – Alfonso Soriano. I expect a huge year from Soriano but he needs to stay healthy for 130 games. Hey, maybe all his bad injury karma will be absorbed by Milton Bradley. God knows Bradley could stand for some karmic retribution.
AL MVP – Miguel Cabrera. Since the BBWAA picks MVPs partially on how well a team does, this is a longshot at best, unless Cabrera becomes the Tigers number three starter. And number four starter. And closer.
Now put your picks in the comments and we’ll look back on this in November and mock each other.

AL – LA Angels: The line-up looks pretty good, and the pitching will get healthy.
NL – NY Mets: Bolstered bullpen, decent line-up… Need one more starter tho – via trade in the summer.
ALROY – David Price: To take the league by storm in less than a month.
NLROY – Dexter Fowler: I also like Fowler, so why the hell not!
ALCY – Josh Beckett: Came close a couple of years ago, has the right tools and team around him to do it.
NLCY – Josh Johnson: What?… I like the name Josh. F’ing biblical.
ALMVP – Miggy Cabrera: he’s gonna be fantasy MVP too.
NLMVP – Albert Pujols: looks good early.

pasting the question I have in prior post. need to decide in just a few minutes. leaning toward reynolds today.
With Aramis out, I’ve got to choose between Reynolds and Davis as my 3b today. Reynolds is in the lineup today, batting 5th against righty Piniero. Not sure if Davis will be in the lineup tonight or not but Texas is facing LHP Hendrickson. Davis did hit a HR last night but followed that with 3 K’s. Will he get a “day off” today?
Thoughts?

Davis. I mean, they haven’t really shown to give Davis days off against lefties yet.

@Frank Rizzo: I’d go Reynolds if Davis is facing a lefty.

@Baron Von Vulturewins: Reynolds is in by default. Ran out of time. Like his chances today batting 5th.

Running out of time tends to be my best way of lineup setting. I have been randomly going into yahoo today and flipping Rios and Corey Hart in my lineup. I’ll probably wind up doing this a couple more times and last one in when I run out of time is the lucky one.

Just traded Quentin and Beltre for Chris Davis and Markakis in my 18 team R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, OPS league. Davis also comes with 3B eligibility. Is that trade as awesome as I think it is? As long as Davis is for real, it’s gold I think.

So that gives me a lineup of John Baker, Ryan Howard, Alexei Ramirez, Chris Davis, Felipe Lopez/Elvis Andrus, Sparkakis, Nelson Cruz, Dukes/Maybin/Daniel Murphy
Best 18 team lineup ever? And it’s not even like I’m weak on pitching. I have Beckett, Haren, Josh Johnson, Jimenez, Francisco, Valverde, Wade, R. Soriano, Masterson, Madson, and T. Buchholz.
Is there a Razzball word for prematurely ejaculating all over your team?

The Marlins have some revenue sharing money they can nurture for a midseason trade. It wouldn’t shock me to see them trade for someone like Hawpe. There’s something very scrappy about this Marlins’ team that I like.

Well, Burnett IS due for some luck this season after getting pretty unlucky last season. But seriously, how is anyone in the AL better than Roy Halladay? Cliff Lee didn’t deserve it last year and he sure as hell won’t win this year. It’s Doc all the way with CC a distant 2nd.

Grey you silly little boy if someone new stumbled upon your fun little site they would think you waited a week to see who got off to hot starts and picked those teams, players for your post season awards. But us as your daily readers know that you would never pick the team that looks just as good as last year (rays) or a pitcher that was dominant in his first outing (Beckett), or one that looks downright filthy (billingsley), a couple of rookies that have looked great in the early going and have JOBS (Fowler and Snider) or a guy that has went crazy the first week (Cabrera). We know that you would never stoop this low…

“Good face” has the number 2 ranking in all of TSN’s fantasy baseball rankings. I expect that no one’s dumb enough to care about this but I’m going to try and turn that into a better asset. Robbing the weak is a huge part of fantasy baseball.
I made an offer of Good Face and Edwin Jackson for Josh Johnson that was fairly laughed at but can you throw out a half dozen names at any position that would be a great return on investment?

April 15th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
@Falcon: @Doug Ault: Braun can easily still finish with 30 bombs, 100 RBIs, 10+ steals, and bat .280 or .285. If you don’t want that out of a pick cut him. Your best value is going to come from holding onto him and waiting for the turn around instead of trading him for pennies on the dollar. Don’t buy high and sell low. Thats not zagging when they zig, thats being rash.

I need to narrow this down to like 2 or 3 who do you think is the best acquisiton or should I hold on to Milledge all together? I find myself really not liking the Yankees but I also do not like the Red Sox. What is so special about either of these teams?? I think the Yankees are VERY old and a huge liability on D. The Sawx have the new face of the franchise—My Little Pony and Youk. Other than that its Beckett and an overrated pitching staff and over-exuberent fans jacking up expectation…..just like in the Bronx!
I need a new team for 09 and its the Rays—-youth and passion and love of the game will overcome evil megasquads built on taxpayer dough and overpriced tickets. I ordered a cowbell on E-Bay and I am working on the mullet.

@Doug Ault: If you needed the help at Felipe’s position (not Jose, right?) I don’t see that trade as being particularly bad for you. Fielder is the pure power hitter so you gave up the 10+ steals Braun can get you for a slightly lower average and probably higher RBI and HR totals. Until then, fuhgeddaboutit. It has its upside when the teams are down though, $6 tickets and the ability to sneak down to 5 rows from first base? Doesn’t get better than that. how??? i am sorry but i see this lineup that you are riding to ring 29
C– Posada …old and coming off injury
1B –Texeira…first time exposure to media frenzy..talented yet traded numerous times in young career
2B Cano ….still waiting
SS Jeter…old and perhaps the most media driven over rated player of his time
3B nothing needs to be said
OF Matsui—old…oft injured
OF Damon— old…pussy arm—perfect for the vast OF??
OF Nady— out for the year?
OF Gardner—finally…YOUTH!! oh wait he bats .218
Swisher— Really??
STAFF
CC—-great post season record and threw about a 1000 pitches too many last yr… at least he won’t break down as he is in tip top shape
AJ– bastion of health
Chow Mein— looks GREAT so far…coming off injury..its ok it was just his leg—pitchers don’t need them
Pettitte—was old 4 years ago
Joba—better served in ‘pen (or right before last call?)
the last real #42….OLD and coming off hip surgery (happens when u are old)
Girardi—–yet to be confused with Billy Martin
Sorry……I just can not see the Yankees having post season success. Tell me what I am missing.

@madx34: That rotation has a high enough K rate to forgive an awful defense. If…IF(!) the Yankees stay healthy they’ve bought a lot of time for their young arms(and the talented younger arms in A ball) enough time to help this year, next year, and on. That’s huge because nobody is talking about Phil Hughes, and he is getting a chance just to work on his pitching in the minors. Two home runs is all that keeps Derek Jeter from having no extra base hits so far this season. That’s the elephant in the room that the Yankees won’t face and everyone knows will be a problem. Looks like this year is when it becomes too obvious to finally overlook.
I don’t know how you can bet against Tampa’s pitching staff. They had 4 starters make 30+ starts last year, and Kazmir made 27. That is beyond a wealth of pitching when you factor in David Price.
I just think the Red Sox will beat the Rays in a playoff series, but picked them more so the Cubs can beat the Red Sox for the World Series.

i like the deal, if only because you are getting the best hitter in the game for two pitchers who maybe underperform this year due to health concerns. of course, the deal also depends on the depth of your pitching staff, but if you have the pitchers then good deal. if not and webb and lincecum have the years like they are capabable, it may be tough to make up the pitching stats.

@BSA….I live in Remy’s hometown—the guy is a TOOL on many fronts.
I had a Saturday pkg and could leave at 830 and be in the Bronx at 1115 for a 1PM game but the brokers stole all the tickets for profitable purposes so my Saturday pkg is now Monday thru Thursday—like that is going to happen!! I originally bought them for Yanks/Sox matchups and the love of the game—half way up the upper deck behind home plate for $14 a seat 5 yrs ago grew to $18 then $28 last year…still a great deal. Now I am just beyond 3B for $20 a seat but I have to do this thing called work Monday thru Friday so the tickets are meaningless to me. I will see Lars in Pawtucket which is fine but the Fenway thing isn’t attractive either. The place is a glorified dump, tickets are double face value if you get a decent deal and “The Nation” is out of control. I do not see the Sawx having that different of a situation then the Yankees talent wise. They are as hyped as Jeter by their following. Sorry if I piss off Yankee and Red Sox fans but I am a realist and that is the way I see it. Where are the Red Sox’ strengths? Youk and Pedroia? Beckett? All three are very good but I can argue question marks on all three.

Got offered Burnett and Morales for Big Papi and Mike Cameron (who I recently picked off the waiver wire). Keeper league, 12 teams @ 33 per team (10 keepers). Current pitching: Kazmir/Josh Johnson/Gallardo/Jimenez/Myers/Penny, with Wandy and Masterson on the bench and Carpenter now on the DL. In the OF, I have Ordonez/Dye/Ethier/Jackson/Choo in the OF, with Drew, Cameron, DeJesus, and Andruw Jones (don’t laugh) on bench. Yes, I wish I played Drew and Cameron this week.
If I did the deal, I’d have to start either Drew, DeJesus, or Orlando Cabrera at Util. I’d also think about moving a SP or two in an effort to get a stud hitter.

@I’m Keith Hernandez: All right, here goes:
A guy in my league is desparate for Saves, and he’s put all of his OFs on the trading block: Hamilton, Bay, Granderson, Victorino, Dunn, Krispie, and Ibanez. I’m not exactly lousy with closers, but I’ve got Mo Rivera, Fuentes, and Hoffman (DL), with Soriano and Franklin hanging around just for fun. For OFs, I’ve got Holliday, Vlad, Bruce, and Ethier. Do you see any possible trade combinations for us? Mostly I’d like to find a way to give OF + RP to get Hamilton, but I’m not sure what it would take.
Other relevant info: 11-team roto league, 7 x 7 with R, HR, RBI, AVG, SB, H, and OPS as offensive stats. Here’s my full roster:
C: Doumit
1B: Fielder
2B: Weeks
SS: Reyes
3B: Reynolds
OF: Holliday
OF: Vlad
OF: Bruce
Util: Ethier
Util: Votto
BN: Flippy Lopez

@johnson21: I’d drop Milledge, especially since you’re OF is good to begin with..as for Hill, i think that depends on if you’re in need of saves or not cuz Perez has a chance of being the closer if he does well in these first few appearances

@john:
Thanks brotha. I am thinking of adding Hill and dropping Milledge. I will see how Perez does cuz I am in dire need of saves. Its hard to drop Milledge cuz he was my 11th round draft pick!

@johnson21: Yeah, cut Milledge. I just wrote a post saying that. Grab Masterson. Don’t drop Perez. He was just called up.
